Mobilizing Nature-Based Solutions Through Temporary Urban Interventions: A Civic Guide to Ephemeral Landscapes
(2025) Doğu, Tuba; Hande Atmaca; Doğu, Tuba; Çetın, Hande Atmaca
The potential of permeable urban landscapes has gained increasing attention in contemporary academic scholarship on nature-based solutions (Nbs). The common thread of these solutions is related to pressing issues arising from responses to climate change caused by urban densification, necessitating innovative strategies for enhancing environmental resilience. However, these strategies often require extensive timeframes and large-scale implementation. In contrast, temporary approaches to urbanism have the potential to provide answers to these strategies by focusing on citizen-engaged, small-scale, low-cost and low-tech actions. This study engages these two planning approaches in dialogue by focusing on overlooked urban interstices—small and unnoticed impervious spaces that have significant potential to become permeable. Developing a conceptual framework, the research explores how ephemeral installations can transform these interstices into nature-based, scalable and socially engaged landscapes. Applying this framework, the study adopts prototyping as an experimental research method, structured around three phases: (1) experimentation: incorporating nature-based aggregates, (2) fabrication: forming scalable and modular tiles, and (3) dissemination: creating social value with workshops. Building over the findings of these phases, the paper concludes with a proposal for a civic urban guide that outlines all these practical strategies for activating underutilized spaces through accessible and low-maintenance interventions. The guide aims to inspire civic engagement and environmental awareness, offering a model for small-scale, bottom-up interventions in line with broader Nbs objectives. In doing so, the research proposes a comprehensive approach to urban resilience that bridges planning theories, material experimentation, and public engagement.

(Galenos Publ House, 2025-05-21) Ellidokuz, Hülya; Aksay, Ersin; Oray, Nese Colak; Özgür, Sefer; Güzelce, Mustafa Can; Colak, Nese
Introduction: Patients with distal radius fractures (DRF) are frequently admitted to the emergency departments (EDs). Reduction with procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) and followed by plaster/splint are the treatment of choice. We aimed to determine the factors affecting the satisfaction in patients with DRF undergoing PSA. Methods: This prospective, observational, cross-sectional study included 70 patients with DRF. The socio-demographic features, comorbidities, level of satisfaction with PSA procedure, physical factors of the environment, physician and patient satisfaction were evaluated. PSA satisfaction scores “1, 2 and, 3” were grouped as “dissatisfied group” and “4-5” points as “satisfied group” with the Likert scale. Patient satisfaction was compared between the groups according to the satisfaction levels. Results: The median satisfaction level was found 4 (interquartile range 4-5). Their satisfaction with the given information about the PSA procedure and the cleanliness of the area where the procedure was performed was higher in the satisfied group than the dissatisfied group (p=0.014 and p=0.007, respectively). Also, as the level of residents of emergency physicians, the satisfaction of the patients increased (p=0.025). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age, gender, educational status, comorbidities, fracture type, additional injury, selected sedo-analgesic drugs, Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale and, complications (p>0.05). Satisfaction was high in all physicians. Conclusion: PSA procedure was satisfactory by a majority and can be performed safely in the ED. The residency period of the physician who performed the PSA, satisfaction with the given information about PSA and the cleanliness of the area were affecting the patient satisfaction.

Exploring the Potential of Lavandula stoechas in Smoking Cessation: A Molecular Docking Study of α4β2 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Interactions
(Istanbul Univ, Fac Pharmacy, 2025-05-07) Barış, Elif; Portakal, Hüseyin Saygın
Background: Lavandula stoechas, commonly known as lavender, has traditionally been used in various therapeutic applications, including smoking cessation. The molecular interaction of Lavandula stoechas compounds with the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are crucial for smoking cessation, is not well understood. This study aims to analyze these interactions and compare them with the known smoking cessation drug varenicline tartrate. Methods: Molecular docking analysis was performed on essential compounds of Lavandula stoechas to assess their binding affinities to the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The study utilized the crystal structure of the receptor and conducted virtual drug screening using AutoDock Vina in the PyRx Virtual Screening Tool. ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion) and toxicity profiles were also predicted using in silico methods. Results: The molecular docking revealed that several Lavandula stoechas compounds exhibited signif7 icant binding affinities to the α4β2 receptor. Compounds with the highest binding affinities were identified and compared with varenicline. The ADME and toxicity profiles indicated that these compounds had more favorable properties than varenicline, suggesting their potential as alternative smoking cessation agents. Discussion: The findings demonstrate that Lavandula stoechas contains compounds with significant binding affinities to the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, similar to varenicline. This indicates a potential role for Lavandula stoechas in smoking cessation therapy. The favorable ADME and toxicity profiles of these compounds further support their potential as alternatives to current smoking cessation drugs. This study paves the way for further research into the therapeutic applications of Lavandula stoechas in smoking cessation.

Which Measures and Parameters of Heart Rate Variability Analysis May Be Useful for Early Detection and Predicting Prognosis of Sepsis? a Systematic Review

Opening the Black Box of AI: A Sociological Study of AI as a Network
(Istanbul Univ, Methodology & Sociology Research Center, 2025-03-19) Erbay, Borabay; Joyce, Kelly
This study provides a sociological understanding of the production of AI, which is underexplored in the sociology of AI. To achieve this, the study focuses on the AI development process. Utilizing Actor-Network Theory (ANT), this study demonstrates how the development of AI creates a network consisting of both human and nonhuman actors. The sociological literature focuses on how AI is adopted in various social contexts, identifying the social effects of its introduction and use. We investigate AI itself, showing the values and politics that constitute AI sociotechnical systems in the United States. Based on interviews with software engineers residing in Northeastern USA who work on AI and music platforms, the study highlights how humans and nonhuman actors and social forces such as capitalism and imperialism coproduce AI systems. Engineers’ technicality-bound worldview plays a crucial role in their interpretation of AI and the drive for efficiency and profit are foundational values that justify including nonhuman actors such as generative AI platforms and datasets as participants in AI networks. This ultimately results in the production of AI sociotechnical systems that recreate values central to capitalism and imperialism.

Differential Effects of Sertraline and Penfluridol on EMT and ECM Remodeling in Glioblastoma Cell Lines
(Dokuz Eylul Univ inst Health Sciences, 2025-01-31) Keleş Bartık, Didem; Oktay, Gulgun; Surer,Seniz Inanc; Sipahi, Murat; Keles, Didem
Purpose: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor with poor prognosis due to rapid recurrence, chemoresistance, and limited efficacy of standard therapies. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-mediated extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling are critical processes in GBM progression and metastasis. The aim of this study is to examine the potential effects of sertraline and penfluridol on the EMT process and gelatinase activity in human glioblastoma cell lines. Material and Methods: U87 and U251 human glioblastoma cells were treated with sertraline and penfluridol at previously identified IC50 doses. Protein levels of EMT markers, E-cadherin, vimentin, Snail, Slug, Twist1, phospho-Akt (p-Akt), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2), were evaluated using Western blotting. Additionally, the impact of sertraline and penfluridol on the release and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were assessed through gelatin zymography. Results: Both sertraline and penfluridol significantly reduced vimentin expression in U251 cells, indicating inhibition of the mesenchymal phenotype. Conversely, these drugs increased vimentin levels in U87 cells, highlighting cell line-specific differences. Sertraline and penfluridol also increased TIMP-2 levels in U251 cells but not in U87 cells. Neither drug altered MMP-2 or MMP-9 activity in either cell line, suggesting that their effects on ECM remodeling may be mediated through TIMP-2 upregulation rather than direct modulation of gelatinase activity. Conclusion: These findings suggest that sertraline and penfluridol potentially inhibit EMT and reduce ECM degradation in U251 cells but exert contrasting effects in U87 cells. This highlights the heterogeneity of GBM tumors and the importance of personalized therapeutic approaches.

Tracing What Remains Behind the Natural Coastline: Unpacking the Delivery of Land Reclamation in Yeşilköy Through Lot 5
(Konya Technical Univ, Fac Architecture & Design, 2024-12-31) Doğu, Tuba; Başarır, Lale
Landfill practices, which have gained momentum within the scope of global urbanization, have drawn attention to coastlines. Presenting opportunities for legitimate urban growth, altering the coastal edges redefines not only the physical split between land and sea but also the social life it engenders. To address this challenge, this article aims to reveal the socio-spatial dynamics of reclaimed urban coastlines, exploring both macro and micro perspectives and their interplay, ultimately proposing a novel methodological approach by employing a narrative lens. Applying this methodological framework, the article traces the historical trajectory of the Yeşilköy coastline in Istanbul, scrutinizing its macro dynamics through the microcosm of Lot 5. The narrative lens of the study is formed by archival sources, including visual and written texts about the Yeşilköy coastline and Lot 5, and semi-structured interviews. Adopting Lot 5 as a micro perspective, the study sheds light on the crucial role it plays as a critical witness to the evolving winds of change in the social and cultural environment, along with the concurrent urban political tendencies that accompany this transformation. Lot 5's significance lies in its connection to Motel Yeşilköy, a renowned mid-20th-century architectural landmark, situated in the same parcel. By acknowledging its association with Motel Yeşilköy, articulating Lot 5 together with the urban context in which it inhabits offers a nested perspective for deciphering the reclaimed coast of Yeşilköy. The paper concludes that the Yeşilköy natural coastline, despite being subjected to landfilling, perpetuates both in urban memory and as a physical boundary. The findings of this paper, therefore, suggest the coastline reclamation to be evaluated within the intricate nature of intertwined spatial narratives at multiple scales, rather than as an expansion of an urban edge isolated from its context.

Geleneksel Türk Kadın Giysilerinde Sıfır Atık
(Anadolu Univ, 2024-06-28) Aktas, Ceren; Adanir, Elvan Ozkavruk
The origins of traditional clothes of the Turks extend to the clothing culture of their ancestors who lived in Eurasia. Turks wore multi-layered, stitched clothes that allowed freedom of movement, compatible with the climate, geography, and culture they lived in, and they used pattern methods that provided the most efficiency from narrow-width woven fabrics. The cutting features of the traditional Turkish clothing based on using the fabric economically and avoiding wastage, and this method has been applied to clothes used in daily life and on special occasions and worn on top of each other in a certain order. Since fabric waste has become a big problem today, solutions are being tried to be produced with the concepts of zero waste and sustainable fashion. Although this understanding is thought to be a new phenomenon, when historical clothes are examined, it can be said that the zero-waste design approach was applied centuries ago. In this study, the zero-waste design approach of traditional Ottoman Turkish women clothing dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries are analyzed in terms of cutting and pattern making techniques. A total of thirty-eight uc etek, cepken and shalvar samples found in Izmir Ethnography Museum were examined. The results show that zero waste pattern and cutting methods are used in traditional Turkish clothes, thus significantly reducing the wastage rate. With this study, in which the production processes of traditional clothing are examined in depth, it is aimed to provide a source for designs to be made with zero waste method in the future.
