    Observing Conductance Quantization by a Novel Magnetic Control System

    In this study, a novel magnetic system that allows observing quantized conductance for undergraduate and graduate laboratories is presented. Bending of a magnetic cylindrical beam, like a cantilever, is controlled by an electromagnet to provide contact between needle type electrode and a plane of conductor. It is shown that by using the beam bending, it is possible to displace an object on the beam in nanometer and micrometer scale. The measured quantized conductance results prove that the designed system can be used for demonstration of the quantized conductance.

    Hasar Tespit Çalışmalarında Görevlendirilebilecek Dronların Bulanık Karar Verme Yöntemleri ile Değerlendirilmesi

    Hayatın her anında gerçekleşebilecek doğal afetlerin, gerçekleşmesi sonucunda büyük can ve mal kayıpları yaşanabilmektedir. Afet bölgelerindeki afetzedelerin tahliyesinin ardından yetkililer tarafından bölgedeki etkilenenlerin maddi açıdan hasarlarının ve tahrip boyutunun belirlenmesi amacıyla bir hasar tespit çalışması yapılması gerekmektedir. Hasar tespitinde yüksek çözünürlüklü görüntü ve tüm afet bölgesini görüntüleme ihtiyacının doğması yüksek teknoloji ürünü drone seçimi problemini ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, hasar tespit çalışmalarında kullanılmak üzere yüksek çözünürlüğe sahip, uzun süre havada kalabilen, hafif, her kurum tarafından kullanılabilecek ve görüntü alma amacıyla üretilmiş, benzer özelliklere sahip beş drone arasından optimum seçimin yapılması hedeflenmiştir. Bu değerlendirme yapılırken kamera çözünürlüğü, kamera görüş açısı, video kare hızı, ağırlık, uçuş süresi, uçuş mesafesi ve birim fiyat olmak üzere yedi kriter belirlenmiştir. Problemin çözüm aşamasında Çok Kriterli Karar Verme (ÇKKV) yöntemleri kullanılarak, Pisagor Bulanık Analitik Hiyerarşi Prosesi (PBAHP) ile kriterlerin ağırlıklandırılması yapılmış, elde edilen kriter ağırlıkları Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) ve The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) yöntemlerinde kullanılarak, alternatifler değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma, ÇKKV ile afet sonrası hasar tespiti ve görüntülenmesi için drone seçimine yönelik olarak yapılan ilk uygulama özelliğine sahiptir. Ayrıca çözüm yaklaşımı sunulan problem için PBAHP, TOPSIS ve PROMETHEE yöntemlerinin kullanılması, uygulanan metot açısından katkı sağlamaktadır.

    Promoting Utilization of Biofuels in the Transportation Sector To Reduce Co2 Emissions: Comparative Analysis

    In this study, due to the high contribution of the transportation sector to generate CO2 emissions, an evaluation for the best scenario of the replacement of petroleum derived fuels by renewable and sustainable alternatives was assessed with a multi collative approach suggesting the second-generation bioethanol as the most promising one. In this context, this paper focused on the practices over the past 23 years in the following four countries; Turkey, China, Sweden, and Brazil, with a comparative regression analysis between the CO2 emissions generated from the consumptions of total energy and biofuels. Accordingly, a curve-fitting and an estimation on the formation of CO2 emissions with the incrementing blends of gasoline by 3 to 100% of bioethanol was forecasted for 2020 to 2030. The outcomes of the comprehensive research indicated the international and national benefits of biofuel use, thus, promoting the potential integration of bioethanol in the Turkish transportation sector.

    Modelling AI in Architectural Education

    This work displays an outlook on major questions concerning the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Architectural education. Gradually, part of the domain knowledge and hard skills become either irrelevant or insufficient by the time the students graduate. This paper suggests that integrating AI in the architectural design curriculum is beneficial for raising designers’ awareness of all areas of architectural design, in the form of input, process, and output. The study views consecutive learning experiences in a continuum and explores the potentials of integrating AI applications and techniques in architectural education, and how architectural design practice may benefit from it. Consequently, it provides insights into how architectural design education may transform itself considering the future impact of AI on the Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC) industry.

    Minimization of Number of Tool Switching Instants in Automated Manufacturing Systems

    This study addresses the problem of minimizing tool switching instants in automated manufacturing systems. There exist a single machine and a group of jobs to be processed on it. Each job requires a set of tools, and due to limited tool magazine capacity, and because it is not possible to load all available tools on the machine, tools must be switched. The ultimate goal, in this framework, is to minimize the total number of tool switching instants. We provide a mathematical programming model and two constraint programming models for the problem. Because the problem is proven to be NP-hard, we develop two heuristic approaches, and compare their performance with methods described in the literature. Our analysis indicates that our constraint programming models perform relatively well in solution quality and execution time in small-sized problem instances. The performance of our greedy approach shows potential, reaching the optimal solution in 82.5% of instances. We also statistically demonstrate that the search algorithm enhances the quality of the solution obtained by the greedy heuristic, particularly in large sets. Hence, the solution approach, i.e., the greedy heuristic and the search algorithm proposed in this study is able to quickly reach near-optimal solutions, showing that the method is appropriate for manufacturing settings requiring sudden adjustments.
