ÖzgürThe Habermas-Foucault debate, despite the excellent commentary it has generated, has the standing of an unfinished project' precisely because it occasions the interrogation of the fundamental categories of modernity, and because the lingering sense of anxiety, which continues to remain after arguments and counter-arguments, demands new interpretations. Here, I advance the claim that what gives Habermas's criticisms of Foucault's histories and theoretical formulations their bite is the categorial distinction he maintains between facts and rights, and by extension, between causes and reasons. The Kantian distinction between de jure (in principle) validity and de facto (factual) effectivity underwrites the categorial distinction between both norms/facts' and reasons/causes' conceptual pairs, which distinction, in turn, is reinforced by a picture of the natural world as matter in motion and human agency as self-determination. I want to claim that Foucault's work enacts a critique of Habermas not by evading the problem of justification but by undermining the very distinctions Habermas needs to maintain the universal and necessary status of communicative rationality. Drawing on Jonathan Lear's discussion of reasons and causes in relation to the unconscious, I claim that psychoanalytic discourse helps us make intelligible a type of reflectionsuch as one finds in Foucault's historiographythat is at once critical and empirical. Moreover, the realization that the distinction between causes and reasons may not be categorial and exhaustive shows how Habermas's insistence on the contrary leads to one particular kind of misrecognition of our practices.Article Kâtip Yazardan Komut Veren Yazara: Senaryo Yazımında Yapay Zekâ Kullanımı Işığında Yazarlık, Otantiklik ve Yaratıcılığın Durum Değerlendirmesi(2024) Savk, Serkan; Gürsoy, A. ÖzgürÜretken yapay zekânın yaratıcı alanlara girişinin yol açacağı potansiyel zorluklar açık olsa da bunların kesin olarak nasıl ve hangi şekillerde vücut bulacağı henüz net değildir. Bu hususta önemli bir endişe, orijinal ve sahte arasındaki çizginin daha belirsiz hale geleceğidir. Bu çalışmada, dilin doğasına ilişkin bir dizi felsefi kuramdan yararlanarak, üretici yapay zekâ söz konusu olduğunda yazarlık ve özgünlük durumunun analiz edilebileceği kavramsal bir çerçeve oluşturuyoruz. İki kavramsal yönelimin, yani yapısöküm ve kökbilimin, yazarlığın her zaman bir ortak yazarlık olarak görülmesi gerektiği iddiasında birleştiğini savunuyoruz. İnsan – yapay zekâ etkileşiminin potansiyelini ancak bu şekilde ortaya çıkarabiliriz.Article Individual Spontaneity and the Possibility of Community in Mead’s Social Psychology(2024) Gürsoy, Ali ÖzgürThe central question of the present study is how to understand the spontaneity of the social self in George H. Mead’s account of the genesis and structure of the self. Its argument develops in three stages. First, I provide a brief discussion of the notion of the self in relation to social existence in Hegel in order to highlight some salient features that will prefigure some of the claims that Mead makes. Second, I discuss Mead’s theory in greater detail in order to emphasize the role of communication and ‘attitude-taking’ in the constitution of the self. These factors comprise what is particularly original in Mead’s account. Finally, I offer an evaluation of Mead’s key claims in the context of certain questions concerning the relationship between the individual and community. I think that Mead provides a sound scheme by means of which we can understand the constitution of the self as a social phenomenon and communities as dynamic systems susceptible to transformation in response to individual and/or group action, i.e., without reifying communities. However, the dynamics of social change, for the most part in terms of ‘adaptation’ in Mead’s account, needs some modification, if we want to understand those periods of social upheaval during which the continuity between the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ seems minimal.Article Eleştiri ve Polemiğin Ötesinde: Çevrimiçi ve Dışı Kamusal Tartışmalar Üzerinden Bakım Etiğinin Sınırlarının Sorgulanması(2023) Gürsoy, Ali ÖzgürBu makale günümüzde çevrimiçi ve dışı kamusal iletişimin bakım etiğine dair sunduğu sınırları incelemektedir. Makalenin argümanı dört aşamadan oluşmaktadır. İlk olarak iki argümansal stil—kritik ve polemik— modernitede etkili olmuş iki etik teorisiyle ilişkilendirilmekte ve kendimizi bu terimlerin kurduğu kuramsal çerçeveye sıkıştırmanın oluşturduğu kavramsal salınımlar gösterilmektedir. İkinci olarak, bakım etiğinin bu salınımları aşmakta ümit verici kaynaklara sahip olduğu iddia edilmektedir. Üçüncü olarak, bu kaynakların merkezinde bakım etiğinin bağımlılık ve bağımsızlık arasındaki zıtlığı yeniden düşünmemizi sağlayan ve ahlak ile siyaset arasındaki sınırları sorgulayan argümanları konumlandırılmaktadır. Özgür; Karanfil, GokcenBu çalışma genel olarak popüler kültürün iktidar, direniş ve öznellik gibi olgulara olanak tanıyan bir alan yaratma potansiyelini ve bu potansiyelin varlığına dair eleştirel yaklaşımları tartışmaya açmaktadır. Çalışmada, Michel de Certeau ve Michel Foucault’nun “strateji” ve “taktik” kavramlarını birbirlerine yakın ama farklı şekilde tanımlamalarından faydalanılarak, popüler kültüre dair iki temel yaklaşımın örtüşme noktaları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Makale, bu iki kavramın popüler kültür çalışmalarında analitik bir araç olarak kullanımının, yani strateji ve taktiklerin birbirini karşılıklı koşullayışının, şu durumu görünür kıldığını ileri sürmektedir: Kültürel ürünlerin esasen çift-değerli oluşları ve sınırlayıcı stratejiler ile özgürleştirici tersine dönüşlerin aynı zemini paylaştıklarını. Öyleyse popüler kültürel ürünlerin kültür endüstrisinin baskısına karşı kullanımı ancak stratejilerin yapılandırdığı bir mekânın içinden mümkün olacaktır. Çalışmanın ampirik boyutunu bir popüler kültür figürü olan Alain de Botton’un kurduğu The School of Life isimli kişisel gelişim oluşumunun analizi oluşturmaktadır. Makale söz konusu organizasyonun özellikle YouTube kanalını ve çevrimiçi satış mecrasını, belirtilen kuramsal çerçeve içinde inceleyerek, The School of Life’ın (ve benzer kişisel gelişim organizasyonlarının) bir analizini sunmaktadır.Article Hakikatin Ötesi, Berisi, Kendisi: “hakikat-ötesi” Kavramına Dair Eleştirel Bir Çözümleme(2021) Gürsoy, A. Özgür“Hakikat-ötesi”, güncel toplumsal gerçekliğimizin ne olduğuna ve bugün karşılaştığımız birçok sorununtasvirine dair tartışmalarda sıklıkla başvurulan bir kavrama dönüştü. Fakat yaygın tartışmalarda hakikatin neolduğu sorusuna dair garip bir sessizlik söz konusudur. Bu durum bir yere kadar anlaşılabilir, çünkü bu soruyumesele eden felsefe tarihinde genel uzlaşıya varılmış bir tanım yoktur. Fakat söz konusu sessizliğin bir riski,hakikati verili ve sadece bulunan bir şeymiş gibi varsayarak, bizleri savunması güç epistemoloji kuramlarınasığınmak zorunda bırakmak ve hakikat-ötesi dediğimiz durumun sebebini bir grup insanın cahilliğinde,aptallığında veya kötü niyetinde konumlandırmaktır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, hakikat-ötesi kavramının felsefi bireleştirisini denemektir. Gerekçe arayışını neyin tatmin edebileceğine dair temel bir sorunu içeren bir yapınınhatırlanması, kavramın kullanımlarının faydasına ve faydasızlığına ışık tutacaktır. Özgür; Karanfil, Y GökçenThe philosophical activity of critique is intimately connected with the mundane activity of public criticism that takes place in newspapers. Drawing on the Kantian tradition of critical philosophy, we argue that four axes, namely, self-examination, liminal interrogation, concern with legitimacy, and the requirement of communicability, are implied by critical discourse and public debate. We then examine a recent set of polemics (between Doan Akin, Ali BayramoOlu, and Etyen Mahgupyan) in the Turkish press with the aid of these axes as well as techniques for the analysis of informal reasoning to determine what critical function such polemics may have. We conclude that critique survives as polemic in the Turkish press, but in such a way that the latter's publicity vitiates the former's communicability. The result is that polemics ultimately track the balance of power between social forces rather than being a transformative element within them.Article The Communicability of Pleasure and the Pleasure of Communication: The “obligation” of Aesthetic Feeling in the Critique of the Power of Judgment(2024) Gürsoy, A. ÖzgürKant makes a puzzling claim in the Critique of the Power of Judgment concerning the connection between the feeling of pleasure occasioned by the appreciation of an object as beautiful and the universal communicability of this aesthetic feeling: on the one hand, he claims that this feeling is due to the free play of the faculties of imagination and understanding, and on the other hand, that it has its ground in the very communicability of this pleasure. The central argument of the present study is that it is possible to clarify the relation between the feeling of pleasure occasioned by the reflective judging of an object and the universal communica- bility Kant attributes to such a judging by grasping the demand for a ‘universality without concept’ claimed by a pure judgment of taste in terms of what appears to be a problematic relationship of grounding between the shareability of pure aesthetic feeling and the reflective activity of the mind. I will claim that this relationship can be rendered clearer by an explication of the ‘share’ of disinterestedness, purposiveness, and subjective universal validity claims in pure judgments of taste and brought together in the notion of a common sense (sensus communis). What thereby comes into view is an original orientation in the world that is presupposed by explicitly theoretical and practical judgments.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Historical a Priori as Form of Life: the Rationality of Social Practices in Foucault's Archaeology in Terms of Wittgensteinian Criteria(Brill Academic Publishers, 2025) Gürsoy, Ö.The concept of rule permeates Foucault's methodological formulations concerning the object of his investigation, but he offers few explicit discussions of the epistemological status of such rules. My claim is that the explication of Foucauldian rules in terms of Wittgensteinian criteria clarifies their epistemological status, and thereby enables one to formulate a novel conception of the historical a priori, one that is defensible against recurrent objections which charge that Foucault's theoretical reflections confuse concepts that are distinct. Foucault and Wittgenstein are best seen as articulating a sense of intelligibility in which forms are integral to content and meaning is not abstracted from social practices. 'Form of life' increases the conceptual cogency of 'historical a priori,' whereas the latter delineates what it would be like to take the former's historicity seriously. © Özgür Gürsoy, 2024.Master Thesis Can Pictures Bear Witness: the Representative Potential of Painting and Photography(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2019) Hasçiftçi, İrem; Gürsoy, Ali ÖzgürAnlamlandırma insan yapımı bir pratiktir. Dış dünyada bulunan her türlü ''şey'' anlamdan yoksun ve insandan bağımsız bir şekilde varolmaktadır. Duyu organları dış dünyadaki bu bağımsız varoluşları kendi sınırlarınca alımlayarak algılamayı ve beraberinde anlamı oluşturur. İnsanlar bu yaratılan anlamlar sayesinde, çevreleri ile iletişime geçerler. Bu iletişim süreci sosyal bir varlık olan insanca sürekli bir gelişime uğratılarak evrilmiştir. Öyle ki teknolojinin de etkisiyle iletişimin sınırları zamanı ve mekanı aşmaktadır. Bir yerde olan olaya zaman ve mekan farketmeksizin ulaşmak mümkün hale gelmiştir. Tanıklık, böyle bir iletişim ortamında sorgulanan bir kavram haline gelmiştir. Basitçe şahit olunan bir olayın başkalarına aktarılması olarak tanımlanabilecek olan tanıklığın aktarımı resimden yazıya, fotoğraftan sinemaya kadar bir çok yol ile sağlanabilmektedir. Bu tezde tanıklık ederken gerçeklikle kurulan ilişki, tanıklığın fotoğraf ve resim sanatları ile aktarımı üzerinden incelenecektir. Bu inceleme yapılırken, fotoğraf ve resim sanatında kullanılan temsil formlarına da anlamın deşifre edilmesi için bakılacaktır. Temsil formları dolayımlı yaratılan anlamlar, Roland Barthes'ın göstergebilim analizi ile çözümlenecek ve tanıklığın gücü, bu anlamların optimize edilmiş gerçeklik ile karşılaştırılmasıyla ölçülecektir. Örneklem olarak tarihsel olaylara tanıklık eden ikonik fotoğraf ve resimler seçilmiştir. Ulaşmak istenen noktalar öncelikle , her iki aktarım yolunun da, farklılıklarına rağmen tanıklık ederken temsil formlarını kullandıklarını göstermektir. Bunun yanında; iki aktarım yolundan birinin tercih edilmesinin, seçilen olaya tanıklık etmede hangisinin daha işlevsel olduğuna bağlı olduğunu göstermektir.
