Abstract
The aim of the study is to examine the mediating role of relationship-centered and partner-focused obsessive-compulsive symptoms in the association between adverse childhood experiences and psychological dating violence. Both perpetration and victimization dimensions were examined separately. The primary hypothesis suggests that early traumatic experiences may heighten obsessive-compulsive symptoms within romantic contexts, which in turn may increase individuals' vulnerability to psychologically aggressive relationship patterns. The research sample consisted of 306 individuals aged between 18 and 30. Data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Relationship Obsessive–Compulsive Inventory, the Partner-Related Obsessive–Compulsive Symptom Inventory, and the Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Abuse – Short Form. Mediation analyses revealed that both types of obsessive-compulsive symptoms significantly mediated the relationship between childhood adversity and psychological dating violence. The findings indicate that early relational trauma may foster obsessive thought and behavioral patterns within close relationships, which in turn may elevate the risk of psychological aggression in romantic dynamics. Overall, the results offer important insight into the developmental and cognitive underpinnings of psychological dating violence. In particular, they highlight the role of obsessive-compulsive symptomatology linked to early adversity in shaping interpersonal functioning and provide valuable implications for prevention and therapeutic interventions.
