2012 yılında Rural Sociological Society tarafından düzenlenen Ronald Wimberley En iyi Makele Ödülü’nü kazanmıştır.
Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi ve Sydney Üniversitesi’nde çalışmış, Eylül 2016’da ise İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi’nde ders vermeye başlamıştır.

Derya Nizam received a Bachelor and Master degree in Sociology from Bogazici University and a Phd degree in Sociology and Social Policy from The University of Sydney. Her principal focus of interest over the the past 10 years has been understanding agricultural and rural transformation in Turkey. She participated as a researcher in two important research projects on “Globalization and Agriculture” and “Agrarian Change under Globalization” funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Foundation of Turkey (TUBITAK). She conducted various fieldworks and interviews with farmers and other rural actors throughout Turkey. She is particularly interested in alternative rural development strategies, together with the various theories of agro-exceptional methodologies in the context of classical agrarian question debate.
She is further interested in Geographical Indications, Rural Sociology, Political Economy of Agricultural and Food Policies, Sociology of Food, Sense of Place and Cultural Identity, Locality and Re-localization Movements, Anti-essentialist Eco-feminism, and Social Media. She is a member of Rural Sociological Society (US), European Society for Rural Sociology, Agrifood-Research Network (Australia-New Zealand) and Rural Studies Networks (Turkey).
In 2012, she has awarded for Ronald Wimberley Best Graduate Student Paper by the USA Rural Sociological Society
She has previously worked at Bogazici University, Istanbul Bilgi University and The University of Sydney before joining Izmir University of Economics in September, 2016.
