(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2024-11) Inan, Deniz; Öğce, Filiz; Yavan, Tulay; Ogce Aktas, Filiz; Aktas, Filiz Ogce
Surgical patients are at risk for pressure injuries throughout the entire surgical process. Prevalence and incidence studies are critical to determine risk groups in surgical patient groups. This study was conducted to determine the incidence of pressure injury development in patients hospitalized in surgical clinics and to examine the effects of risk factors on it. The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 138 patients hospitalized in surgical wards. Data collection tools included a patient information questionnaire, The National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) Pressure Injury and Stages Form, and the Munro Perioperative Pressure Ulcer Risk Assessment Scale. Data were analyzed on the SPSS 24.0 software package by using descriptive statistical tests such as frequency and percentage distribution, chi-square test, independent groups t-test, and univariate logistic regression analysis. The incidence of surgery-related pressure injuries was found to be 18.8 %. Patients' mean scores on the Munro scale were 10.23 f0 .2.95 before surgery, 12.80 f 2.57 during surgery, and 23.03 f 5.07 following surgery, with the mean total score being 24.47 f 5.44. The mean score on the total Munro scale was statistically significantly higher in patients who developed pressure injuries than in those who did not. Patients' age, blood albumin level, body mass index, presence of oedema, use of medical equipment, mobility status, type of anaesthesia used in surgery, and duration of surgery were determined as effective risk factors in pressure injury development. In conclusion, it was found that pressure injuries developed at a considerable rate in patients undergoing surgical operations. It is recommended that surgical nurses should take the necessary precautions in time.

(2020-04-09) Bebiş, Hatice; Yavan, Tülay; Gulesen, Aslı
BACKGROUND/AIMSThe aim of this study was to determine the effects of supplemental monitoring and counseling in addition to the standard monitoringduring the treatment period on the abstinence behavior of smoking cessation center applicants.MATERIAL and METHODSThe randomized controlled study was conducted in the smoking cessation clinic as an intervention study. The study involved 67participants. Data collection was implemented using the Descriptive Questions Form, Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence, CarbonMonoxide Monitoring Chart, and Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. After routine standard training and tests at the smoking cessation center,a total of six supplemental interviews were conducted in the intervention group by one of the researchers; these interviews wereconducted one week before smoking cessation and one week and one, two, three, and six months after quitting. Two interviews wereconducted in the control group for evaluation: one week before and six months after quitting.RESULTSAfter six months, 88.2% of the intervention group and 60.6% of the control group had stopped smoking. A statistically meaningfuldifference was found between the intervention and the control groups in terms of attending the standard monitoring. In the last interview, the self-efficacy score of the intervention group was significantly higher than that in the control group. Compared to the control group, the intervention group was 1.5 times more successful in smoking cessation at the end of the sixth month.CONCLUSIONThose successful in smoking cessation must be monitored in frequent follow-ups simultaneously supported by physicians, nurses, andother health-care providers.

Abstinence-Related Motivational Engagement Scale: Validity and Reliability in Turkish People
(Bilimsel Tip Publishing House, 2018-10-18) Yavan, Tulay; Gulesen, Asli; Bebis, Hatice
OBJECTIVES: This research aimed to conduct a validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the abstinence-related motivational engagement (ARME) scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 122 people and was administered in a smoking cessation clinic. The sociodemographic-smoking status characteristics questionnaire and the ARME scale were used for data collection. A psycholinguistic language adaptation was performed. In the validity, analyses, content, construct, and criterion-related validities were used. For content validity, expert evaluation was performed. For construct validity, principal component analyses (exploratory factor analyses) were performed. Orthogonal (Varimax) rotation was used to explore multiple factors. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test was used to assess the adequacy of the sample size. For criterion-related validity, we compared the ARME scale points of people who were abstinent and had relapse for smoking at the end of the sixth month. In the reliability analysis, standard deviation (SD) and item analysis, internal consistency, and test-retest methods were used. RESULTS: The four factors explain 58% of the total variance. Items have factor loading between 0.409 and 0.805. When the factor structure of the scale was assessed, the items in each factor group have a factor load of at least 0.40. Due to one-dimensional use of the original scale, it has been decided to maintain this scale in its original form. The ARME scale points of people who quit smoking were statistically higher than the points of people who had relapse at the end of the sixth month. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were between 0.846 and 0.763. Significant and positive correlation was found between the test-retest scale scores. CONCLUSION: The Turkish adaptation of the ARME scale, which was developed for adults who quitted smoking, is an adequately valid and reliable measurement instrument. It is considered that the scale might be used reliably in different cultures as well.
