    Crime and Media: the World of ‘reality Show’ as a Moral Frame of Reference

    Crime and transgression has become an important factor which is portrayed by the media outlets. The genre called crime reality show situated within the genre of reality show in the media in recent years has a special place in popular cultural world of meaning. Those who are accepted as protagonists, confessors, interrogators, victims and vigilantes are among the major actors in crime reality shows which function as constructing various different cultural and sociological frames of reference. The purpose of this article is to answer to the following questions: What does the crime reality show narrative tell us about contemporary Turkish culture? What are the implications of such a genre in terms of producing a televisual morality? What are the dynamics between socially irresponsible imagination and the idea of moral panic constructed via sensibility guided reasoning? In this paper, we argue that the crime reality show genre in Turkish television employs communicative strategies which are based on mediatization of morality as well as a new trend called prudentialism.

    Engaging Consumers Through Corporate Social Responsibility Messages on Social Media: an Experimental Study

    Strategically managed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) communication is an essential tool for organizations to achieve dialogic and participatory communication with their stakeholders. This study aims to investigate whether CSR related social media, particularly Twitter, messages regarding distinct categories (i.e. economic and ethical) and areas (i.e. product and community relations) would have different impacts on consumer attitudinal and behavioural outcomes such as attitude towards the brand, engagement intention, word-of-mouth intention, and purchase intention. Following this aim, the research is conducted in two stages including exploratory and experimental phases. The results show that while CSR related Twitter messages on product/economic & ethical category have a higher impact on consumers purchase intention than messages on product/purely economic category, messages on economic & ethical area have a higher impact on consumer engagement than messages on purely ethical category.

    2011-2013 Constitution-Making Process and Media Field in Turkey

    This paper examines so-called “Constitutional Process” which took place between 2011 and 2013 in Turkey to eventually fail after more than two years of intense work and rise of expectations both in Turkish society and international community from the perspective of media and communications. How Turkish media influenced the constitution making process including workings of Constitutional Conciliation Commission is discussed, surveying relevant media content or performance with a particular focus on the political economy of Turkish media during that period. Traditional media outlets such as newspapers and television channels, and nowadays largely digital platforms, function as present-day agoras where political agenda is determined and contested. These online and offline channels have different levels of influence on discussions of the political elite, as presented extensively in media and communication studies. Together with the global media environment, national media foster the emergence of its own elites, while maintaining multi-layered relationships with high-level political decision-making processes. Media channels therefore bear symbolic powers that impact political policymaking by employing methods such as agenda setting and framing. In this line of thought, this article approaches Turkish media space as a specific field while its content and its political economy are examined in relation with the constitution making process to reveal the role played by media during highly politicized processes, such as constitution making, as well as eliciting the dynamics that herald such media performance.

    An Analysis of Crime-Based Reality Tv Shows: the Case of Müge Anli Ile Tatli Sert

    Reality TV, bireyin ve yönetimselliğin yeniden tanımladığı ve gücün birey tarafından özümsenerek yine birey tarafından bireysel formda uygulandığı neoliberal kültürde, büyük rol oynamaktadır. Suç odaklı reality programlarının ise korku ve ahlaki panik söylemlerine dayalı suç temsilleri aracılığıyla kendinden sorumlu ve öz-disiplini benimsemiş bireyler oluşturmayı desteklediği tartışılmaktadır. Bu tez, Müge Anlı ile Tatlı Sert programını Türkiye'deki reality suç programı türüne örnek bir vaka olarak, çalışmanın teorik çerçevesi kapsamında inceleyecektir. Bu çalışma, belirtilen televizyon programının siyasi ve sosyal etkilerini ortaya koymanın yanı sıra söylemsel stratejilerin program içine gizlenerek nasıl neo-liberal kültüre ve korku söylemine hizmet ettiğini anlamayı hedefler. Yöntemsel olarak, bu tez belirtilen programın metinlerini eleştirel bir yaklaşımla içerik ve söylem analizi yöntemlerini uygulayarak inceler. Uygulanan içerik analizinin sonuçları belirtilen program kapsamında ele alınan konular, vaka çeşitleri ve de katılımcı sayıları hakkında fikir vererek, programa dair bir çerçeve sunmaktadır. Ayrıca söylem analizi bu tezin teorik çerçevesiyle ilişkilendirilmiş temaların bu program kapsamında söylemsel taktiklerle pekiştirilişine ışık tutmaktadır.
