A Novel Multi-Objective Optimization Approach for Sustainable Supply Chain: A Case Study in Packaging Industry
(Elsevier, 2019) Resat, H. Giray; Unsal, Berkcan
This study presents a novel two-stage hybrid solution method designed for sustainable supply chain systems and applied in packaging industry. The proposed solution algorithm includes two main stages; Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method that is applied to select the most efficient suppliers by considering different performance indicators of company and a mixed-integer linear multi-objective mathematical model that is proposed to optimize the design of the sustainable supply chain in terms of total cost, time and social factors. Mathematical modelling approach and data analysis are presented to help decision makers. Minimization of cost, time; and maximization of sustainability by using augmented epsilon-constraint method are outlined by using proposed model. Pareto solution sets of the multi-objective mathematical programming problem are obtained by using GAMS language and environment. Sensitivity analyses are made to highlight the details of illustrative cases based on real-life data from packaging industry. (C) 2019 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. A Bi-Objective Model for Design and Analysis of Sustainable Intermodal Transportation Systems: a Case Study of Turkey
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) Resat, Hamdi Giray; Turkay, Metin
This paper presents a mixed-integer linear optimisation model to analyse the intermodal transportation systems in the Turkish transportation industry. The solution approach includes mathematical modelling, data analysis from real-life cases and solving the resulting mathematical programming problem to minimise total transportation cost and carbon dioxide emissions by using two different exact solution methods in order to find the optimal solutions. The novel approach of this paper generates Pareto solutions quickly and allows the decision makers to identify sustainable solutions by using a newly developed solution methodology for bi-objective mixed-integer linear problems in real-life cases.

A Discrete-Continuous Optimization Approach for the Design and Operation of Synchromodal Transportation Networks
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2019) Reşat, Hamdi Giray; Turkay, Metin
This paper presents a multi-objective mixed-integer programming problem for integrating specific characteristics of synchromodal transportation. The problem includes different objective functions including total transportation cost, travel time and CO2 emissions while optimizing the proposed network structure. Traffic congestion, time-dependent vehicle speeds and vehicle filling ratios are considered and computational results for different illustrative cases are presented with real data from the Marmara Region of Turkey. The defined non-linear model is converted into linear form and solved by using a customized implementation of the e-constraint method. Then, the sensitivity analysis of proposed mathematical models with pre-processing constraints is summarized for decision makers.

A Hybrid Multi-Objective System Optimization Approach for Risk and Resilient Management in Multimodal Transportation Models

Design and Analysis of Novel Hybrid Multi-Objective Optimization Approach for Data-Driven Sustainable Delivery Systems
(IEEE-Inst Electrical Electronics Engineers Inc, 2020) Reşat, Hamdi Giray
This study presents a novel two-stage solution method designed for sustainable last-mile delivery systems in urban areas. A proposed hybrid solution methodology includes multi-criteria decision-making system to select the most efficient logistics providers by considering different performance indicators, and a mixed-integer linear optimization model for last-mile cargo distributions by drones within metropolitan areas. We present a multi-objective modeling approach by considering time windows for customer services and charging operations of drones and outline important characteristics of the mathematical programming problem to minimize transportation cost (in the meantime carbon dioxide emissions) and total sustainability score of the system by using epsilon constraint method to find out the Pareto frontiers. The main novelty of the proposed solution methodology is the inclusion of many performance indicators of last-mile delivery systems into multi-objective models for design of a sustainable city logistics. Additionally, the proposed model is applied to an illustrative case by using real-life data of one of the metropolitan in Turkey. The approach is shown as comparative analysis of proposed method with other two state-of-art solution methodologies for multi-objective problems, after defining some pre-processing, symmetry breaking steps, valid inequalities, and logic cuts.

Design and Development of Robust Optimization Model for Sustainable Cross-Docking Systems: a Case Study in Electrical Devices Manufacturing Company
(Springer, 2021) Resat H.G.; Berten P.; Kilek Z.; Kalay M.B.; Kalay, M. Batuhan; Resat, Hamdi G.; Berten, Pelin; Kilek, Zeliha
This study presents a novel bi-objective solution methodology designed for sustainable material handling operations in cross-docking areas of companies. After successfully applied linearization techniques over a predefined non-linear model, a proposed mixed-integer linear programming model is designed by considering decrease of reception process lead-time; elimination of redundant material handling movements; as well as reduction in waiting time of pallets under sorting and transfer processes in packaging operations. We present a bi-objective modeling approach and outline linearization of the non-linear mathematical programming problem to minimize material handling cost and total sustainability score in terms of carbon dioxide emissions by using epsilon constraint method to find out the Pareto frontier. An illustrative data set collected from one of the leading electrical devices manufacturing companies is used to illustrate the proposed solution approach. The solution approach is shown as a comparative study after specifying some pre-processing and symmetry breaking measures, valid inequalities, and logic cuts. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Design and Development of Hybrid Forecasting Model Using Artificial Neural Networks and Arima Methods for Sustainable Energy Management Systems: a Case Study in Tobacco Industry
(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2020) Resat, Hamdi Giray
This study presents a design and development of hybrid forecasting model by using ARIMA and artificial neural networks for short-term energy forecasting processes in energy management systems. Proposed model is applied into a company operating in the tobacco products manufacturing industry and reliability of the model is tested by using real-life data set in illustrative cases. In line with the results obtained from ARIMA method, some of the factors affecting electricity consumption are taken into consideration as input data for artificial neural network model. After considering the correlation between solar energy generation, working hours, production quantities and past electricity consumption data, various number of neurons and different training algorithms are tested to design the optimal system for the company. The proposed hybrid model provides around 39.9% improvement compared to forecast data obtained by using only ARIMA model.
