The Interrelation of TV-Series and Interior Design in the Construction of Meaning: Cinematic Narratives and the Psychological Function of Space
(University of Pittsburgh, University Library System, 2025) Bolat, Idil; Guleryuz, Oylum Dikmen
This paper explores the complex relationship between TV series and interior design, intending to emphasize the significant impact of spatial design on the construction of cinematic meaning. The study proffers the notion that both visual media and interior design function as potent storytelling instruments, employing spatial dimensions not solely to portray physical environments, but also to convey emotional profundity, psychological intricacy, and thematic richness. Through a detailed analysis, the study illustrates how interior design is employed to mirror the psychological states of characters, propel the narrative forward, and amplify the portrayal of emotions and social dynamics. Focusing on Turkish television series such as Masumlar Apartman & imath; (2020) and & Scedil;ahsiyet (2018), the paper underscores the pivotal role of interior d in visual storytelling. These series demonstrate how meticulously designed spaces can enhance narrative depth and emotional resonance. The findings of this study offer valuable insights that can guide future research in the intersection of interior design and visual media, emphasizing the significance of spatial design in crafting compelling cinematic experiences.

Children's Hospital Schools as Social Environments and Their Effects on Healing and Well-Being: Case Study in İzmir Behçet Uz Children's Hospital School

Comprehensive Evaluation Approach in the Assessment of Play Value of Playgrounds: Case of Balcova, Izmir
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Kaştaş Uzun, İpek; Dikmen Güleryüz, Oylum
Urban children prefer playgrounds near home spaces due to physical and parental limitations on outdoor play. To increase the play value and use of playgrounds, it is essential to take a comprehensive design approach that considers the playground's design and surrounding environment. Using the play value calculation tool designed by Woolley and Lowe, and making site location analyses, this study aims to evaluate the relationship between physical and environmental characteristics of playgrounds with land use decisions through an analysis of the numbers of users and play value of playgrounds in neighbourhood parks in Balcova, Izmir (Turkey).

Children in Urban Environments: a Case Study From a Dense Neighbourhood in Izmir-Turkey
(Yildiz Technical Univ, Fac Architecture, 2022) Dikmen Güleryüz, Oylum; Dogan, Fehmi; Kasali, Altug
The aim of this study is to understand children's engagement with their urban outdoor environments in Izmir-Turkey, a city with a high urbanisation rate, and to explore the factors that affect their outdoor preferences outside of their school time. The study consists of a field study conducted in a densely populated middle-income neighbourhood. Participants are fourth-grade children from a state-run primary school aged 9-11 years (n=44) and their parents (n=40). The study followed a multi-methodological approach, employing questionnaires, drawing and story writing tasks as data collection methods. Results of the study showed the strong tendency to prefer outdoors during their free time even when their neighbourhood is a high-density urban settlement with limited opportunities for outdoor activities. In the studied neighbourhood, most of the participants mentioned the schoolyard over other locations as their preferred place fin- outdoor play. Other than the schoolyard, the children mainly reported familiar places in their neighbourhoods, close to their local environments which were also depicted in their drawings and described in their stories. From the perspectives of urban designers and policy-makers, the findings of the study highlight aspects to be concerned about opportunities for outdoor play in high-density and urbanised central neighbourhoods.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL SCHOOLS AS SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS: A TURKISH EXAMPLE
(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2018) Dikmen Güleryüz, Oylum; Hasirci, Deniz
The aim of this study is to find out whether socialization related to the healing process in a hospital school has positive effects on the well-being of children. Every day, many children receive treatments in children's hospitals and some need to stay there for extended periods of time. Consequently, many child patients are not able to go to their schools and this may lead to their becoming unsocial as well as their staying behind from their classmates. Some children's hospitals have hospital schools in which children can receive education and socialize. A qualitative participatory design process was developed through a combined methodology of descriptive case study area analysis, direct observation, questionnaire, drawing, and interview. Children who received education from the school with different ages and illnesses, and teachers participated in this study. Their participation as active users was key, as children seldom have a say in the healthcare environments they inhabit. It was found, hospital schools have many benefits for children, like making them feel more positive, improving their morale, supporting their education and distracting them from the negative effects of illness and being in hospital. Socialization was found to have positive effects on children's healing and well-being like, being together with other children, playing, studying and sharing ideas. Therefore, hospital schools are environments for children that may support well-being and healing by various means of socialization with other children and teachers. Listening to the opinions of children in the children's hospital school has several advantages in providing feedback related to both practical and ethical issues within a hospital school setting. The study aims to be useful for designers of healthcare environments as well as hospital school decision makers.
