Conference Object Children's Stereotypical Gendered Behaviours in Outdoor Educational Play Environments(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2020) Isci, Beril; Hasirci, DenizThe aim of this study is to understand how gender-typed and gender-neutral play environments affect children's behaviour. Thus, individual and group play attitudes are investigated in relation to playground design. Preschool children spend their most of the time with free time activities. The learning process gains importance in those activities according to their preferences in choosing play, peer and environment. In early childhood ages, they learn their stereotypical gender behaviour in related to their cultural and parental background, which affects their attitudes in their social interaction. Between 5 and 8 years, children learn their gender identity, developing confidence and ability according to gender. Within this context, the study aims to analyse if the design of outdoor playground environments can reduce gender discrimination by learning children's preferences in gender-neutral and gender-typed environments according to playground equipment. In order to start thinking about reducing gender segregation in early childhood ages, this study aims to understand how playground design affects types of games. Learning children's preferences and attitudes with behavioural mapping and observational checklist for determined individual and group play behaviours may help to for designing gender-neutral playgrounds. Research results may have implications for the design of gender-neutral playgrounds that provide various opportunities for group play for the early childhood period and help reduce gender discrimination by creating awareness on stereotypical gender norms.Book Part Tourists’ Current Sensory Experiences of Bazaar Atmospheres in Istanbul(Springer Nature, 2023) Altiparmakogullari, C.; Hasirci, D.This study focuses on tourists’ sensory experiences of traditional, touristic bazaar atmospheres in Istanbul, Turkey and changes experienced after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a specific focus on the sense of smell. The fact that research regarding the effects of the pandemic is relatively new and thus lacking in terms of a comprehensive understanding, and that the topic requires an interdisciplinary approach are the main arguments of the paper. In the paper, the aim is to discuss existing literature on the topic and means by which it can contribute to newly developed research, and utilizing the Peak and End Theory in a touristic environment, focusing on further advancing experiences in these environments. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Article Citation - Scopus: 2The Multiple Stories Behind the Modern Ceramic Coffee Tables of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey(Oxford Univ Press, 2020) Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep TunaAt the end of the 1950s, 200 coffee tables and other furniture and fittings were created by interior designers who won a design competition organized by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) in Ankara. The tables were envisioned to be made by modern ceramic artists and designers of the time. Despite never meeting, they created joint works that were celebrated at the time for their artistic quality. The coffee tables, which were used by government ministers, were useful for introducing ceramics into government interiors while informing the leaders of a modernizing Turkish nation about modern art. This study traces the stories behind the creation of these unique artworks based on the personal stories of Fureya Koral, Sadun Ersin, and the Taylan Ceramics Atelier, who were all significant contributors to the history of this furniture. The method used included literature review, a comprehensive archival research through popular magazines, and interviews with artists and designers of the time. The interviews helped uncover data that could not be accessed otherwise. The findings contribute to Turkish and international design history, uncovering artworks and identifying modernist artists and designers of the time in Turkey.Conference Object Living Walls Enhancing Quality of Educational Environments(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2018) Hasirci, Deniz; Kaştaş Uzun, İpek; Atmaca, HandeLiving walls provide an effective solution in landscaping in educational environments where space is scarce and therefore, valuable. Landscaping in educational environments is crucial for learning minds, positively affecting concentration, memory, and academic performance, as well as, well-being and quality of life. In this study, the aim was to build a living wall on the Izmir University of Economics (IUE) campus in Izmir, Turkey that had limited horizontal space for landscaping. The living wall structure was fixed on six 16 meter high columns of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design building -currently, the highest in Turkey. An educational and unique aspect of the living wall was that it was designed and constructed with a participatory approach, to the ultimate point of planting the plants. Led by a design and construction team from IUE, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design students were involved in the design of the plant layout as well as the planting. Each student designed one of the columns and the designs were revised to enable a more coordinated appearance, and one that would follow the lines of the building. With a continuous learning approach, the design team took part in all phases of the project -research, design, plant choice, controlling the application, planting, and follow up work including documenting the development of the garden. With the decreased amount of green spaces in urban areas, vertical spaces are increasingly providing an ecological and aesthetic alternative to classic horizontal landscaping options. A living wall can be defined as a system covered with various types of vegetation forming a fauna on its own, either as a part of a building or free structures. The vegetation varies from grasses to herbs, to fruits and vegetables. However, the main idea is that there is a structural base, that is layered with a hydrophilic substance, and inside which there is the growing substance which is organic or inorganic. There are two main systems that are used in today's living walls, which are panel and felt. The significance of the study that uses the felt system working like soil, comes from the ecological and creative solution to today's growing problem regarding urban green spaces in educational environments, as well as the participatory approach to the design process. After five years, the living wall is healthy with careful regular maintenance. The plant growth and living wall development is continuously controlled by visual and technical documentation. The research can be furthered in other vertical surfaces on this and other educational establishments where horizontal space is scarce, with developing technology to develop irrigation systems. The study shows that concrete jungles are not the fate of urban educational environments, and being an innovative and sustainable application, living walls are proposed to be the future of vegetation. Approaching an ecological problem in a participatory way from the beginning to the execution was educational for not only the students, but all stakeholders, and has also led to a sense of identity and belongingness in the faculty, that one of the main aims of participatory design processes.Editorial Finding Our Voices: The Value of Oral History in Interior Design Research(Sage Publications Inc, 2025) Hasirci, DenizMaster Thesis Children's Hospital Schools as Social Environments and Their Effects on Healing and Well-Being: Case Study in İzmir Behçet Uz Children's Hospital School(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2012) Dikmen Güleryüz, Oylum; Hasırcı, DenizHer gün birçok çocuk, çocuk hastanelerinde tedavi görmekte ve bazıları bu mekanlarda uzun süre kalmak zorundadırlar. Conference Object Preschool Children and Sunlight(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2018) Yalciner, I. Polat; Hasırcı, DenizThis study analyzes the role of sunlight on preschool children and intends to make a contribution to the improvement of the preschool learning environments. Sunlight is a source of energy for all people who spend most of their time indoors. Children spend up to 40 hours a week in educational settings mostly under artificial lighting whereas they need to be exposed to more sunlit environments as sunlight has numerous positive effects on children and children's spaces. These include positive contributions to attitudes and performance [1] as well as academic test scores [2]. It has also been found that sunlight may have positive effects on concentration [3]. Understanding the relationship between light and the environment can help designers or architects to improve interior designs for better performance. There is an important link between good lighting and students' performance; therefore, the illumination of learning spaces plays a critical role as all human beings need enough and appropriate lighting system for reading or other visual tasks. Good natural light helps to create a sense of physical and mental comfort owing to its diffused quality and its subtle changing value and colour, that electric lighting does not have [4]. In this study, the preferences of preschool children regarding sunlight were investigated. Children and their teachers from a private preschool in Izmir, Turkey participated in a study that used a questionnaire, interior images, and models with varying windows as instruments. Moreover, preferences regarding sunlight and artificial light in the classroom environment were compared. The results indicate that children choose sunlight as it makes them more enthusiastic during their play activities. They were also found to be more active in classroom activities when desired levels of sunlight are reached. The means by which sunlight could be utilized in the preschool classroom and the significance of interior design with regards to sunlight is discussed in the study with interior design proposals.Article Concept and Scale Focus in Interior Design Education: an Adaptive Reuse Museum Project(2022) Kabaçam, Gülçin; Hasırcı, Deniz; Edes, Zeynep; Tatari, Haluk; Bakır Küçükkaya, İdil; Rolla, Silvia; Çalışkanelli, MügeThis study concentrates on the value of the interior design profession and how a concept and scale approach can enable a holistic professional approach.
