Children's Stereotypical Gendered Behaviours in Outdoor Educational Play Environments
(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2020) Isci, Beril; Hasirci, Deniz
The aim of this study is to understand how gender-typed and gender-neutral play environments affect children's behaviour. Thus, individual and group play attitudes are investigated in relation to playground design. Preschool children spend their most of the time with free time activities. The learning process gains importance in those activities according to their preferences in choosing play, peer and environment. In early childhood ages, they learn their stereotypical gender behaviour in related to their cultural and parental background, which affects their attitudes in their social interaction. Between 5 and 8 years, children learn their gender identity, developing confidence and ability according to gender. Within this context, the study aims to analyse if the design of outdoor playground environments can reduce gender discrimination by learning children's preferences in gender-neutral and gender-typed environments according to playground equipment. In order to start thinking about reducing gender segregation in early childhood ages, this study aims to understand how playground design affects types of games. Learning children's preferences and attitudes with behavioural mapping and observational checklist for determined individual and group play behaviours may help to for designing gender-neutral playgrounds. Research results may have implications for the design of gender-neutral playgrounds that provide various opportunities for group play for the early childhood period and help reduce gender discrimination by creating awareness on stereotypical gender norms.

Contemporary Interior Architecture and Identity of Home: Education and Practice
(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2019) Irtem, N.; Hasırcı, Deniz
This study aims to investigate contemporary interior architecture practice in a housing complex and possible reflections on interior architecture undergraduate education and professional practice. Another goal is to bridge contemporary interior architecture practice and the identity of home by analyzing cultural identity, personal interpretations, and place attachment. The study was completed within the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design program at Izmir University of Economics to support students' research based approaches to interior architecture. Each student had an individual research project with a different focus. This particular project focuses on the connection between interior design and personal identity in housing complexes. The case study involved comparisons, which are supported by visuals from a housing complex with houses in same architectural style and plan in Izmir, Turkey. Through a questionnaire with the users of the same housing complex in Izmir/Turkey, alongside analysis by photographic comparison of their living rooms as the most commonly used space, the study explores ideas about divergence between contemporary spaces and their users. In this way, it was possible to reach tangible data. Findings provide answers for space creation better fitted to users' needs that has implications for interior architecture education, as well as for the sector. This study showed that contemporary interior architecture could include issues related to personal or cultural identity. Through the questionnaire answers and visual comparisons, it can be stated that it is possible to apply various types of styles about the interior space within the same housing complex. Although participants claimed that they do not think they have similarities with their neighbors, it could be seen that age and gender range are similar and educational and professional profiles have common points. That is why adaptation to this contemporary site and the use do not show much variation. In general, differences occurred in visuals that can be seen as different use of interior elements of decor and colors in the space although the plan arrangements were the same. Moreover, the connection between interior design and personal identity were found to be linked in a matter of spatial identity. The results from the participants of same housing complex featured that there is not much divergences among the spaces, its ideas and its users. However, personal differences and subjective preferences occurred more about the context of spatial identity, belonging and happiness. The research study had multiple advantages that lead to pedagogical, educational, theoretical, and practical prospects.

The Multiple Stories Behind the Modern Ceramic Coffee Tables of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
(Oxford Univ Press, 2020) Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
At the end of the 1950s, 200 coffee tables and other furniture and fittings were created by interior designers who won a design competition organized by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) in Ankara. The tables were envisioned to be made by modern ceramic artists and designers of the time. Despite never meeting, they created joint works that were celebrated at the time for their artistic quality. The coffee tables, which were used by government ministers, were useful for introducing ceramics into government interiors while informing the leaders of a modernizing Turkish nation about modern art. This study traces the stories behind the creation of these unique artworks based on the personal stories of Fureya Koral, Sadun Ersin, and the Taylan Ceramics Atelier, who were all significant contributors to the history of this furniture. The method used included literature review, a comprehensive archival research through popular magazines, and interviews with artists and designers of the time. The interviews helped uncover data that could not be accessed otherwise. The findings contribute to Turkish and international design history, uncovering artworks and identifying modernist artists and designers of the time in Turkey.

Biophilic Interior Design: a Case Study on the Relation Between Water Elements and Well-Being of the Users in an Educational Building
(Anadolu Univ, 2021) Nevzati, Fiona; Demirbas, O. Osman; Hasirci, Deniz
The concept of biophilia is an innate human tendency to seek connection with nature. Biophilic design is the integration of the built environment and nature, which offers an opportunity to design healthier places, resulting in lower stress and improved well-being. Water elements are considered one of the most effective biophilic design elements for the betterment of the interiors through decreased stress and improved mood. This paper examines the relationships between well-being and principles of biophilic design through indoor water elements, with specific focus on educational environments. A case study was conducted examining the effects of various indoor water elements for an entrance area of an educational building. It was found that occupants were generally content with the presence of interior water elements, and they perceived that direct access to nature made them feel more connected with it. There is a statistically significant difference between the responses of males and females, t = -2.041, p = 0.045 (p<0.05), while females perceived lowered stress when in the presence of interior water elements, males were more neutral. The research study concludes with a discussion on the means by which interior water elements can reduce stress and increase relaxation.

Children's Hospital Schools as Social Environments and Their Effects on Healing and Well-Being: Case Study in İzmir Behçet Uz Children's Hospital School

    Preschool Children and Sunlight
(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2018) Yalciner, I. Polat; Hasırcı, Deniz
This study analyzes the role of sunlight on preschool children and intends to make a contribution to the improvement of the preschool learning environments. Sunlight is a source of energy for all people who spend most of their time indoors. Children spend up to 40 hours a week in educational settings mostly under artificial lighting whereas they need to be exposed to more sunlit environments as sunlight has numerous positive effects on children and children's spaces. These include positive contributions to attitudes and performance [1] as well as academic test scores [2]. It has also been found that sunlight may have positive effects on concentration [3]. Understanding the relationship between light and the environment can help designers or architects to improve interior designs for better performance. There is an important link between good lighting and students' performance; therefore, the illumination of learning spaces plays a critical role as all human beings need enough and appropriate lighting system for reading or other visual tasks. Good natural light helps to create a sense of physical and mental comfort owing to its diffused quality and its subtle changing value and colour, that electric lighting does not have [4]. In this study, the preferences of preschool children regarding sunlight were investigated. Children and their teachers from a private preschool in Izmir, Turkey participated in a study that used a questionnaire, interior images, and models with varying windows as instruments. Moreover, preferences regarding sunlight and artificial light in the classroom environment were compared. The results indicate that children choose sunlight as it makes them more enthusiastic during their play activities. They were also found to be more active in classroom activities when desired levels of sunlight are reached. The means by which sunlight could be utilized in the preschool classroom and the significance of interior design with regards to sunlight is discussed in the study with interior design proposals.
