Conference Object A Scalability Assessment of Biofabrics as an Alternative Architectural Construction Material(Sociedad Iberoamericana de Gráfica Digital (SIGraDi), 2024-11-15) Gözde Damla Turhan Haskara; Filiz Özbengi Uslu; Selen Çiçek; Anıl Dinç DemirbilekThis research explores the scalability of biopolymer applications in recent biobased textile design applications for architectural construction. It particularly focuses on the transition from laboratory experimentation to architectural construction practice with the aid of computational design and digital fabrication. The research aims at harvesting spatial structures through the re-characterization processes for desired material properties. The methodology is divided into four steps: Modification of the biofabric formulation derived from bacterial cellulose (BC); tensile strength tests; computational design and digital fabrication of a catenary geometry as a scaffold; bioassembly process; and observations at different environmental conditions after the removal of the scaffold. The results have shown that the material properties, such as the tensile strength, structural integrity, high capacity of water detention, and heat insulation, differentiate bacterial cellulose-based biopolymers as circular alternatives to the current conventional architectural construction materials and processes, having us reevaluate our connection with nature through architecture.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1The Use of Open Design in the Fab Lab Ecosystems: Lessons Learnt for Knowledge Management(Inderscience Publishers, 2023) Demirbilek, Anıl Dinç; Mengi, O.In the last decade, the processes of designing have significantly changed through the emergence of digital technologies and manufacturing tools. Particularly, increasing use of digital technologies and tools, reframes fabrication laboratories (fab labs) as vital ecosystems naturally growing their creative capabilities and evolving knowledge management competences through open design. Then, how the open design (OD) is implemented in such ecosystems? What would be the lessons learnt for the knowledge management regarding the OD processes occurring within the fab labs? This study explores the essential drivers for OD through the meta-analyses of the literature. For the case study, the features of fab labs in Türkiye are analysed with regard to capabilities, events and networking components. The findings reveal three essential drivers that enable OD in fabrication processes, namely open fabrication, co-creation and open service. The paper also provides a framework for knowledge management for the implementation of OD within fab lab ecosystems. Conference Object Open Design: Exploring the Use of Open Knowledge in Service Design(Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited, 2022) Demirbilek, Anıl Dinç; Mengi, O.The aim of this paper is to investigate the usage of open knowledge in service design platforms within the theoretical framework of open design. The paper also explores the innovative outcomes of the integration of knowledge management into service design through available digital environments and tools. The methodology is based on a framework analysis of current research on open design and open knowledge, and a critical review of case studies in the service design industry. The structure of the methodology consists of two phases. For the first, framework analysis is employed to organize and examine open design, through the process of summary, to reach a flexible matrix output. The second phase is to analyse different service design platforms as a case study, considering the theoretical discussions of open design that would allow the positioning open knowledge as an instrument to create innovative solutions within service models. The findings will discuss the importance of open design in the context of knowledge management. A critical review of theoretical discussions will enable the exploration of open knowledge in service design through the utilization of digital technologies, and how it responds to emerging problems, and creates solutions and opportunities using technological systems and infrastructure. The relevance of our findings and implications for knowledge management underline the importance of open knowledge integration within service structures. The case study provides a contemporary approach to open design as a methodology, which leads to improved understanding of service design capabilities for the creation of participant involvement in knowledge generation and management. The paper generates value for knowledge communities and designers in different sectors, while illustrating the significance effect of open design methodology on shaping service flows and structures built up on open knowledge. © 2022 Academic Conferences Limited.
