The Blue Funk in the Fish-Tank: a Study on the French Banlieue Riots
(Univ L Aquila, 2022) Yavuz Velipasaoglu, Didem
The problems of French suburbs came to the fore in the early 1980s, particularly during what was known as Hot Summer of 1981. This study investigates the social polarization between the poor and the affluent caused spatial segregation in the banlieus of France. Situated about fifteen kilometers east of Paris in the area of Seine Saint-Denis, the housing projects, or habitation a loyer modere (HLM) as they are known in France, of Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil were constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s mostly in peripheral areas. HLM were considered as an answer for the increasing housing needs after the Second World War, particularly for low-income families, although large numbers of middle- class families lived there in the early post-war period. And in their early years, they improved the living conditions of many families. Today the neighborhoods are mostly inhabited by multicultural minority groups, a mix of low-income, immigrant, North African, and Muslim groups. The multicultural banlieues are isolated and suffer poor infrastructure and poor transportation links to the urban center and neighboring towns. This study focuses on the causes of violence and crime and the relationship of power and powerlessness in an urban context. Gentrification enters in to the picture in the recent years for the banlieues' cases as globalization has pushed renewal projects into city peripheries and old city centers across the world.

Redesigning Hereke Carpets: A Modernization Path Through Patterns and Compositions at Sümerbank in 1960s Turkiye
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Yavuz Velipasaoglu, D.; Nasir, E.B.; Velipasaoglu, Didem Yavuz
This study examines the mythologization of Anatolian handicrafts created by a group of artists at Sümerbank, a Turkish state enterprise, in the 1960s, which aimed to foster a sense of patriotism (vatan). These designs, emerging with the onset of Turkiye’s multi-party period and the postcolonial context worldwide, provide a framework for exploring local modernism in Turkiye. This study explores how the 1960s were shaped by the prevailing ideology of the time and involved efforts to adopt Western modernist aesthetics, principles of abstraction, and the Bauhaus approach to art and design, in the case of Sümerbank Hereke carpets. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Weaving an Empire: the Hereke Factory Under the Banner of Ottomanism (1842-1914)
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Yavuz Velipasaoglu, Didem
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the style of Ottoman textiles underwent a remarkable shift. This study examines this shift through the case of the Hereke Imperial Factory, a showcase of Ottoman modernism, from the factory’s foundation to the run up to the First World War. In this study, I draw on Ottoman archival records and sources found at the Hereke factory library to show how the style of the textiles produced at the factory was gradually ‘nationalized’ under the reigning political ideology of the day. I also argue that the evolving styles produced by the designers at the Hereke factory were not merely a reflection of the political culture of the era but also, and more significantly, an active factor in shaping that culture. When creating their designs, the designers at Hereke consciously sought to revive the past, and over time, I show, the aspects of the past they embraced for this purpose changed in important ways, gradually shifting from European-style ornamentation to more ‘authentic’ Ottoman styles that were in reality an entirely new synthesis of earlier Eastern designs. That is, designers effectively created a self-consciously ‘Ottoman style’ for the first time, paralleling the efforts of the empire around them to forge a modern imperial identity. I devote particular attention to Tovmas Effendi, an Armenian painter and Hereke’s chief draftsman, to demonstrate how the idea of Ottomanism crystalized in carpet design.

İmparatorluktan Cumhuriyete Çocuk İşçiler: Geçiş Mekanı Olarak Hereke Fabrika Yerleşkesi (1910’lar-1950’ler)
    (2025) Velipasaoglu, Didem Yavuz
