The policies set forth by European Union members to support energy transition are transposed into national policies, strategies, and action plans. Energy transition calls for empowering citizens and communities regarding energy-related initiatives. Of particular importance are smart energy systems and their potential for involving individuals and communities in energy transition initiatives. However, not all citizens are willing to invest in renewable energy or smart appliances. Thus, there is a need for implementing smart energy initiatives, which have three main steps, namely, awareness, mindset (readiness for action), and action. Bearing in mind the lack of uniformity in this area across the European Union, this manuscript assesses the levels of awareness, mindset, and action utilizing the results of a comprehensive international survey, the ECHOES project, with respect to demographic and socioeconomic variables, such as age, income level, and education level. The analysis reveals that 58% of respondents from the West European sample demonstrate a high level of awareness, 56% are ready for action, and 63% already demonstrate action. The percentages are similar for the East European sample, with 56% demonstrating a high level of awareness, 55% are ready for action, and 66% already demonstrating action. Overall, women have higher levels of awareness, readiness for action, and action. Birçok ülke doğal afetler yüzünden sıkıntılar çekmektedir. Örneğin, deprem ve sel gibi doğal felaketlere meyilli çok etkin bir bölgede yer alan ülkemiz, Türkiye, yıllardır zorluklar yaşamaktadır. Ayrıca, hatırlayacağınız gibi Mart 2011'de Japonya'da ve Ekim 2011'de Türkiye'de meydana gelen depremler hem insanların hayatına hem de bu iki ülkenin ekonomisine büyük zararlar vermiştir. Bu model konut, sanayi, kamu ve tarım tesislerinin yeniden yerleştirilmesini içermektedir.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 5Promoting Electricity Conservation Through Behavior Change: a Study Protocol for a Web-Based Multiple-Arm Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial(Public Library of Science, 2024) Asgarabad, M.H.; Vesely, S.; Biresselioğlu, Mehmet Efe; Caffaro, F.; Carrus, G.; Demir, Muhittin Hakan; Kirchler, B.; Klockner, Christian A.Background and aims As a part of the framework of the EU-funded Energy efficiency through Behavior CHANge Transition (ENCHANT) project, the present paper intends to provide a “Research Protocol” of a web-based trial to: (i) assess the effectiveness of behavioral intervention strategies––either single or in combination––on electricity saving, and (ii) unravel the psychological factors contributing to intervention effectiveness in households across Europe. Methods and materials Six distinct interventions (i.e., information provision, collective vs. individual message framing, social norms, consumption feedback, competitive elements, and commitment strategies) targeting electricity saving in households from six European countries (i.e., Austria, Germany, Italy, Norway, Romania, and Türkiye) are evaluated, with an initial expected samples of about 1500 households per country randomly assigned to 12 intervention groups and two control groups, and data is collected through an ad-hoc online platform. The primary outcome is the weekly electricity consumption normalized to the last seven days before measurement per person per household. Secondary outcomes are the peak consumption during the last day before measurement and the self-reported implementation of electricity saving behaviors (e.g., deicing the refrigerator). The underlying psychological factors expected to mediate and/or moderate the intervention effects on these outcomes are intentions to save electricity, perceived difficulty of saving energy, attitudes to electricity saving, electricity saving habit strength, social norms to save electricity, personal norms, collective efficacy, emotional reaction to electricity consumption, and national identity. The intervention effectiveness will be evaluated by comparing psychological factors and consumption variables before and after the intervention, leading to a 14 (groups including 2 control groups) × 6 (time) mixed factorial design, with one factor between (group) and one factor within subjects (time)–6 measurements of the psychological factors and 6 readings of the electricity meters, which gives then 5 weeks of electricity consumption. Results Data collection for the present RCT started in January 2023, and by October 2023 data collection will conclude. Discussion Upon establishing feasibility and effectiveness, the outcomes of this study will assist policymakers, municipalities, NGOs, and other communal entities in identifying impactful interventions tailored to their unique circumstances and available resources. Researchers will benefit from a flexible, structured tool that allows the design, implementation and monitoring of complex interventions protocols. Turizm endüstrisinin çevre sorunlarında büyük bir rol oynamaktadır. Turizm insan yapımı ve kültürel çevreye olduğu kadar ekolojik çevreye de diğer sektörlerden daha fazla bağlıdır. İzmir, Türkiye'nin en önemli turistik yerlerinden biridir. İzmir bölgesel kalkınma planında çevre turizmini teşvik eden çalışmalar bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle, İzmir bu çalışma için çok uygundur. İzmır'de konaklama tesislerinin algı, yaklaşım ve eylemlerini anlamak için kapsamlı bir literatür taraması yapılmıştır. The ongoing conflict in Syria has caused displacement of millions of people. Cash-based interventions play an important role in aiding people in the post-crisis period to enhance their well-being in the medium and longer term. The paper presents a study on how to design a network of administrative facilities to support the roll-out of cash-based interventions. The resulting multi-level network consists of a central registration facility, local temporary facilities, mobile facilities and vehicles for door-to-door visits. The goal is to reach the maximum number of eligible beneficiaries within a specified time period while minimizing logistics costs, subject to a limit on total security risk exposure. A mixed integer programming model is formulated to optimize the inter-related facility location and routing decisions under multiple objectives. The authors develop a hierarchical multi-objective metaheuristic algorithm to obtain efficient solutions. An application of the model and the solution algorithm to real data from a region in the southeast of Turkey is presented, with associated managerial insights. (c) 2021 The Author(s). Therefore, it is significant to identify the factors that shape individuals' food consumption behaviour. Turkiye prioritises sustainable food consumption and the prevention of food loss and waste as a national focus. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the drivers of individuals' food consumption habits in Turkiye through a survey with the participants being households in Izmir, the third most populous city in Turkiye. More specifically, the study has two main objectives: (i) to identify the factors influencing households' food consumption preferences and (ii) to demonstrate how the factors concerning sustainable food consumption interact through a survey conducted in Izmir. Based on the state-of-art literature, an online survey was completed by 515 respondents in Izmir. Through an analysis of the survey responses, this study provides a descriptive analysis of socio-demographic variables and a correlation analysis between socio-demographics and sustainable food consumption behaviours, including food shopping behaviour, food purchasing and consumption behaviour, dietary habits, and food waste behaviour. The results demonstrate that socio-demographic factors such as age, gender, education level, income level, and the number of residents in the household are significant for sustainable food consumption behaviour. The survey results also demonstrate that the respondents do not consider carbon footprint generation from food production and transportation in their decisions or behaviours. The study's main limitation is that the survey is implemented in a single city, Izmir. Future research may extend the scope to other cities in Turkiye, allowing a comparative analysis.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 5The Significance of Enabling Human Consideration in Policymaking: How To Get the E-Ferry That You Want(Frontiers Media Sa, 2021) Berntsen, Alexander; Saether, Simen; Royrvik, Jens; Biresselioglu, Mehmet Efe; Demir, Muhittin Hakan; Røyrvik, Jens; Sæther, SimenThere is broad agreement in literature and policy that the transport sector needs to maximise electric mobility, in order to lower both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This ongoing transformation continues to require a high degree of technological innovation. Consequently, policymakers are striving to reward innovation in procurement tender contracts, in order to achieve sustainable innovation. At the same time, such contracts are often designed with a principle of technology neutrality in mind, to prevent any distortion of the market logic. This article suggests that it is misguided to try to perfect the logic of the tender system and that articulating contract that rewards innovation is no guarantee of a sustainable solution. Rather than being technological, the problem should be seen as moral: the mounting environmental challenge. Policymakers thus have clear ideas about the action needed based on what they, through moral conviction, consider to be appropriate action. This case study-conducted as a part of the EU H2020-funded ECHOES Project under Work Package 6-on the electrification of the Flakk-Rorvik ferry connexion reveals how policymakers were able to achieve the intended results: in this case, an e-ferry rather than a biodiesel ferry, in spite of, rather than because of, the tender system logic. They achieved this by involving stakeholders in the process with a continuous and uninterrupted dialogue. The project stakeholders were able to intervene in the tender system logic in favour of human considerations. We argue that this project was a success because human judgement, not system logic, was the driving force. By extension, we argue that systems will only allow policymakers to pursue moral issues to the degree that they allow human intervention.Master Thesis An Analysis of Decision Makers' Preferences Through Supplier Selection Problem /(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2021) Taşbaşı, Sinem; Demir, Muhittin Hakan; Özpeynirci, Nail ÖzgürIn this thesis, we consider the supplier selection problem with a focus on the methods proposed. We also consider the supplier selection criteria used in different methods. Reviewed methods are all based on the compensatory approaches, where a good score of a supplier in one criterion may compensate for the poor score in another criterion. We are not aware of any non-compensatory approach proposed for the supplier selection problem. In this study, the main research question is to analyze the possibility of expressing the preferences of a decision-maker using a compensatory method for the supplier selection problem. We prepare a survey based on pairwise comparisons of specially designed suppliers evaluated on three criteria. The survey study presents the pairwise comparison questions one by one to the participant and the responses of the participant affect the next question asked. For each participant of the survey, we check the consistency of the responses using two different mixed integer programming models; the former model assumes the supplier selection method is a compensatory method based on a linear value function, and the latter assumes the use of MR-Sort, a noncompensatory method. The survey results indicate that a linear value function can explain 22% of the participants' preferences, whereas MR-Sort is capable of explaining the preferences of all participants. Pakistan, mevcut altyapısında yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarına ağırlık vererek enerji kıtlığını giderme yolunda ilerleme kaydetmektedir. Pakistan'ın enerji sorunlarını azaltmak için rüzgar enerjisi ve güneş PV (fotovoltaik) teknolojileri gibi bir dizi proje ya faaliyete geçmiş ya da geliştirilme aşamasındadır. Yeni Pakistan hükümeti 2030 yılına kadar tüm elektrik üretiminde yenilenebilir enerji oranını %30'a çıkarmak istemektedir. Ancak Türkiye, yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları açısından Pakistan'ı geride bırakmaktadır; örneğin ülke 186 aktif rüzgar enerjisi tesisine ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, sosyoekonomik değişkenler ile Pakistan ve Türkiye'nin iki farklı bağlamında yenilenebilir enerjinin benimsenmesi arasındaki karmaşık etkileşimler incelenmektedir. Karmaşık sosyoekonomik süreçlerin anlaşılması, bu ülkeler yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarına geçiş zorunluluğu ile mücadele ederken çok önemli hale gelmektedir. Bu çalışma, literatürün kapsamlı bir analizi yoluyla her iki ülkede de yenilenebilir enerji teknolojisinin benimsenmesini etkileyen önemli faktörleri ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Kamu bilinci, eğitim ve gelir düzeyleri gibi değişkenleri analiz eden bu araştırmanın amacı, yenilenebilir enerji ortamını etkileyen eğilimleri bulmaktır. Bu tez, eşitlikçi ve başarılı bir geçişi teşvik etmek için sosyoekonomik konular ile yenilenebilir enerji politikalarının oluşturulması arasındaki boşluğu doldurmanın önemini vurgulamaktadır. Sonuç olarak araştırmamız, Pakistan ve Türkiye'de yenilenebilir enerji kullanımının teşvik edilmesinde odak gruplara rehberlik edebilecek bilgiler sağlayarak sürdürülebilir kalkınma hakkındaki daha geniş tartışmalara katkıda bulunmaktadır.Master Thesis Reverse Logistics on Water Meter Industry and Production Study With Maximum Recycled Material Ratio(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2022) Demirkurt, Tankut Kaan; Demir, Muhittin HakanTers lojistik uygulamaları hammadde maliyetlerinin artması, hammadde tedariğinde yaşanan gecikmeler ve geri dönüştürülmeyen ürünlerin çevreyi kirletmesi ile birlikte giderek önemli, hatta zorunlu bir hal almaktadır. Ters lojistik, firmaları rakipleri ile olan rekabetlerinde hem ekonomik, hem de çevreci yaklaşım açısından öne taşımaktadır. Literatürde geri dönüşüm üzerine çalışmalar olsa da, su sayacı sektöründe geri dönüşüm ve geri dönüştürülmüş malzemelerin üretime nasıl dahil edileceği ile ilgili bir çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmadaki amaç, maksimum geri dönüştürülmüş malzeme kullanarak ev tipi su sayaçlarının üretilmesini sağlamak ve sayaçların ilgili standartlara göre tüm testlerden geçtiğinden emin olmaktır. Testler OIML R49-2 ve EN ISO 4064-2 standardları referans alınarak gerçekleştirilmiş, geri dönüştürülmüş hammaddelerin üretime dahil edilme oranları da bu test sonuçlarına göre belirlenmiştir. Yapılan testler, üretimde geri dönüştürülmüş pirinç malzemenin %100 oranında kullanılabileceğini, geri dönüştürülmüş plastik malzemelerin ise, en fazla %20 oranında ana hammaddeye karıştırıldığında su sayacının ilgili standartları sağladığını göstermiştir.
