Determinants of Current Account: an Intertemporal Approach

Abstract

Bu çalışma, cari işlemler hesabının belirleyicilerini ve teorilerini analiz etmektedir.Çalışmada, cari işlemler hesabına yönelik çeşitli yaklaşımlar, bu yaklaşımlarıntarihsel altyapıları ve bu yaklaşımlara ilişkin literatür taraması sunulmaktadır. Cariişlemler hesabını açıklamaya çalışan yaklaşımlardan biri olan ?dönemlerarasıyaklaşım?ın etkinliği ekonometrik bir çalışmayla ölçülmeye çalışılmıştır. Cariişlemler hesabı ve gayri safi yurtiçi tasarruflar, dönemlerarası yaklaşımının dayattığıbir takım bağımsız değişkenlerle ayrı ayrı ekonometrik analize tabi tutulmuştur.Ekonometrik analiz sonucunda, gayri safi yurtiçi hasılanın ve orta yaşlı nüfusuntoplam nüfus içerisindeki payının, cari işlemler hesabı ve gayri safi yurtiçitasarruflar üzerinde negatif etkisi olduğu; okullaşma oranının ve gayri safi sabitsermaye oluşumunun ise pozitif etkisi olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuçlar, dönemlerarasıyaklaşımın, cari işlemler hesabını ve gayri safi yurt içi tasarrufları açıklamadabaşarılı olduğunu; fakat uyarlama sürecinin teorinin öne sürdüğü gibi olmadığınıgöstermektedir. Ayrıca, teorinin temel varsayımlarının aksine, cari işlemler hesabıve gayri safi yurt içi tasarruflar arasında anlamlı bir istatistiksel ilişkibulunamamıştır.

The theories of the various approaches to current account balance, thehistorical background of approaches to current account balance and a literaturereview is presented. An econometric research to assess the effectiveness ofintertemporal approach to current account balance is conducted. The currentaccount balance and the gross domestic saving variables are regressed separatelyagainst several independent variables enforced by the intertemporal approach.According to the results, gross domestic product and the share of middle agedpeople in the total population have negative effects on current account balance andgross domestic savings; whereas the gross fixed capital formation and the grossenrollment rate have positive effects. The results showed that the intertemporalapproach is effective in explaining countries? current account balances and grossdomestic savings levels? but not through the way stated by the theory. Also there isnot a significant relationship between current account and gross domestic savings.
