Anatolian Dowry Culture: Some Traditional Textiles in A. R. İzzet Koyunoglu Museum

Abstract

The dowry (çeyiz) in Anatolia consists of real estate, goods, clothing, and textiles prepared by the bride and groom's families. Dowry culture is a multifaceted phenomenon nourished by traditions and beliefs dating back thousands of years. It is a socio-economic event related to the economy, traditions, and beliefs. In Anatolia, dowry preparations begin with the birth of a girl. Textiles such as lace, lace covers, embroidered textiles, peshkirs, kerchiefs, socks, wardrobe covers, Quran covers, bundles, and bedspreads are gradually placed in the dowry chest over time. These textiles play a significant role in the daily lives of Anatolian people. Although wedding customs have changed greatly due to socio-economic and geographical differences, the dowry tradition is still important and continues in Anatolia. This study focuses on the importance of embroidered textiles in Anatolian dowry culture. The samples examined belong to the collection of the A.R.İzzet Koyunoglu Museum.
