Abstract: This essay is an investigation of the first theatrical production of Heywood's domestic or middle-class tragedy A Woman Killed with Kindness (1603)-a type of play, written in the age of Shakespeare, which is about ordinary, not exceptional, characters, and thus looks forward to the drama of the modern era as well as backward to the morality plays of the fifteenth century.
