Abstract: This study investigates whether Turkish university students are motivated to learn English, why they want to learn English, and what kind of role English plays in their lives. Furthermore, it examines whether there are significant differences between language learners in a public university and a private university. The study is descriptive in nature with an extension of analyzing two subpopulations and comparing their results. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
