After receiving an undergraduate degree in City and Regional Planning from the Middle East Technical University in 1998, he completed a master’s degree in Urban Design at the same university with his thesis on the gated communities in Istanbul. He later received a second master’s degree in Architectural History from University College London, Bartlett School of Architecture, with his thesis on theatre architecture in 19th-century London. He completed his Ph.D. in Art History at the University of Toronto in 2104. His Ph.D. dissertation is on the influence of American architecture on postwar Turkish architectural culture. His academic interests include: history of modern architecture, the architectural culture of the Cold War era, the representation of the city and architecture in art and literature, 20th-century Turkish architecture
