Article Citation - WoS: 33Citation - Scopus: 31Sexualised Productions of Space(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2012) Baydar, GülsümThis themed section consists of articles that explore the intricate and complicated relationship between sexuality and space. The underlying premise is that space is never a homogenous, unified, neutral and a-priori entity that precedes subjects but emerges as the outcome of an ongoing production process which involves actors and material components. Heteropatriarchal understandings of space based on masculinist premises have largely ignored women and queer subjects who may subvert or alter normative spatial practices. The latter challenge established spatial typologies and their gendered associations, such as the house with women and the war zone with men. Furthermore, the practices of marginalized subjects point to alternative understandings of space based on fluid and porous boundaries between such dualities as materiality/representation, inside/outside and private/public. The contributors to this themed section analyze non-normative spatial practices by drawing from feminist and queer theories, postcolonial studies, architectural theory and geography. They focus on specific cases from a broad geographical span ranging from South Asia to Europe. Despite their different contextual foci, the following authors speak to each other by engaging in scholarship that resists disembodiment and by addressing the materiality of space as an arena of continuous production in relation to sexed bodies and sexualized identities. They all focus on strategies that counter hegemonic spatial practices and engage with the crucial question of how to think space differently.Article Developing Cities With Design(2010) Balcioğlu, Tevfik; Baydar, GülsümOver the last decade, design has come to be regarded as a powerful and conspicuous tool for transforming cities to global city status. Bu bağlamın hem üreticisi hem de ürünü olan beden, imajla olan ilişkisi çerçevesinde zengin bir teorik alan sunmaktadır. Bugün, yaygın cihaz kullanımı, protezler, plastik cerrahi ve genetik araştırmalar dolayısıyla bedenin sınırları daha önce görülmemiş bir ölçekte sorgulanıyor. Bu çerçevede simülasyon, imaj ve imajın bedenle ilişkisine dair eleştirel bir tutuma katkıda bulunabilecek zengin bir kavram olarak ortaya çıkar. Tarih boyunca farklı simülasyon anlayışları imaj ve bedenin imajla ilişkisine farklı açılımlar getirmiştir ve yol açtıkları farklı yaklaşımların sosyal ve politik düzlemde dikkate değer yansımaları vardır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, çağdaş dönemde beden ve imaj arasındaki ilişkiyi Jean Baudrillard ve Gilles Deleuze ve Felix Guattari'nin simülasyon teorileri aracılığıyla incelemektir. The Ethnographic Gallery there was founded by one of the residents to publicize and perpetuate the villagers’ socio-cultural heritage. The core collection of the gallery consists of typical ethnographic material which includes the founder’s family belongings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Later additions, which are seemingly irrelevant to Tahtacı Turkmen identity, include disparate objects ranging from radios of the 1960s and 70s to stuffed animals, Shamanic objects from Native American tribes, and gifts from contemporary international visitors. We argue that a New Materialist engagement with this unusual collection reveals Tahtacı Turkmen identity as an ongoing production involving the entanglement of historical and contemporary discourses and the materiality of spaces and objects. Given the gendered associations of domesticity, the architecture of the house provides the most obvious context to explore these issues. In the early years of the Turkish Republic, images of the modern house and modern, secular women were actively promoted by the architects and intellectuals of the new nation-state. Representations of women, which abound in popular journals but end up dispersed between the lines in contemporaneous architectural texts, often escape critical scrutiny. In general, only the imaginary figure of an asexual ideal Turkish woman is allowed to have legitimate entry to the discourse on modern Turkish culture. Here, I focus on the figuration of woman in architectural discourse with particular emphasis on a domestic reference in a book by Ismail Hakki Baltacioglu, a leading intellectual of the period. Kentsel planlama ve mimarlık, mimari tasarım dilinin kullanımı yoluyla kültürel kimlik konularının öne çıktığı bu tür fuarlarda öncü rol oynamışlardır.On dokuzuncu yüzyıla gelindiğinde Avrupa açısından dünya, iki parçadan oluşuyordu: Batılı biz ve Doğulu öteki. Bu doğrultuda öncelikle, ulusal kültür ve kültürel kimliğin endüstriyel tasarım pratiğini nasıl şekillendirdiği ayrıca bu kavramların ürünlerin kültürel anlamlarını nasıl etkilediği ortaya konmuştur. Daha sonra sergi, Türk-lük algısına ilişkin yapıyı açıklamak üzere, söylem düzeyinde ele alınmıştır. Son olarak sergideki ürünlerde Türklüğün nasıl kullanıldığı ve ifade edildiği incelenmiş ve örneklenmiştir.
