Master Thesis Analysis of the Passenger Flow in Izmir Metro Train Stations(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2015) Haner, Gülce; Öner, ErdinçSistemlerde varlıkların gelişler arası zaman aralığı dağılımı, ulaşım dahil olmak üzere çeşitli alanlarda çalışılmaktadır; otobandaki araç trafiği ve metroyu kullanan yolcular, ulaşımdan örnekler olarak verilebilir. Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1A Case Study To Reduce Accident Rates and Waiting Times at A Selected Roundabout(Scientific Research Center Ltd Belgrade, 2012) Oner, Erdinc; Çeli̇k, Burcu; Isik, GulIn this study, the crash statistics for the roundabouts in Izmir, Turkey were analyzed. One of the roundabouts with the highest crash rates was selected and countermeasures for crash reduction at the selected roundabout were identified. The expected benefits were estimated by the use of before and after crash analysis data found in the literature. In addition to the countermeasures for crash reduction, the maximum waiting times at the roundabout were analyzed and minimized. The roundabout has 28 units of traffic signals. Phases of the traffic signals at the roundabout were evaluated for all directions and improved according to the Highway Capacity Manuel traffic signal timing formulas. The improved phases of the traffic signals were evaluated using ARENA simulation software. The maximum waiting time reduction at the roundabout was documented using the outputs of the simulation model. The fuel usage for the vehicles and the amount of emissions transmitted to the atmosphere are expected to reduce due to the reduction in the maximum waiting times at the roundabout.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Approximated Headway Distributions for Non-Signalized and Signalized Freeway Entrance Ramps(Elsevier Science Bv, 2011) Oner, ErdincCumulative interarrival time (IAT) distributions for four different non-signalized entrance ramps (three ramps with a single lane, one ramp with two lanes) and two different signalized entrance ramps (both with a single lane) were established which can be used in digital computer traffic simulation models. The cumulative IAT distributions for the signalized and non-signalized entrance ramps were compared with each other and with the cumulative IAT distributions of the lanes for freeways. The comparative results showed that the cumulative IAT distributions for non-signalized entrance ramps are very close to the leftmost lane of a 3-lane freeway where the maximum absolute difference between the cumulative IAT distribution of the leftmost lane of a 3-lane freeway and the entrance ramps cumulative IAT distribution was 3%. The cumulative IAT distribution for the signalized entrance ramps was found to be different from the non-signalized entrance ramp cumulative IAT distribution. The approximated cumulative IAT distributions for signalized and non-signalized entrance ramp traffic for any hourly traffic volume from a few vehicles/hour up to 2500 vehicles/hour can be obtained at http://www.ohio.edu/orite/research/uitds.cfm. A.; Oner, E.; Isik, G.At complex intersections, traffic congestion causes pollution and leads to accidents, high commute times and many other problems. Correct traffic signal timing can help to reduce the congestion and it can improve the traffic flow. We present a new microscopic traffic simulation-optimization model with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for traffic signal timing and demonstrate the model with an application to a major roundabout with 28 traffic signal heads in Izmir, Turkey, using real data. A VISSIM (Verkehr In Stadten-SIMulationsmodell) model of the Osman Kibar Roundabout, based on actual traffic flow data, is developed. A PSO model was used to search for traffic signal timings that would minimize mean travel time through the roundabout, and the microsimulation model (VISSIM) was used to evaluate the solutions from PSO. The changes in the traffic signal timings resulted in a 55.9% decrease in average delay time per vehicle passing through the roundabout, and a 9.3% increase in the number of vehicles passing through the roundabout per unit time in the best-case scenario.Article Evaluation of the Benefits of Reflectorized Sign Posts To Drivers(Pamukkale Univ, 2013) Oner, ErdincIn United States Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provides departments of transportation (DOTs) the option of using retroreflective material on sign posts when the DOTs determine that there is a need to draw attention to the sign, especially at night. The State of Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) required all Stop, Yield, Do Not Enter, and Wrong Way sign posts to be reflectorized with RED reflective sheeting material and all Chevron, Stop Ahead, and One/Two Large Directional Arrow sign posts to be reflectorized with YELLOW (sign background color) reflective sheeting material as part of ODOT Comprehensive Highway Safety Plan and FHWA' recommendations. In this study, a photometric analysis and a human factors analysis were conducted to estimate the benefits of reflectorized sign posts to driver visual perception, driver guidance and driver comprehension. The study showed that the reflectorized sign posts improve detection, recognition, and comprehension of traffic signs for drivers, especially in nighttime driving conditions.
