Makalenin ana araştırma sorusu, ortalama çekim uzunluğuna (OÇU) ve buna bağlı diğer verilere bakarak, 1960’tan 1979’a uzanan süreçte Yeşilçam filmlerinin üslup özelliklerinin açıklanabilir olduğunu göstermektir.

Doors, Privacy and the Public Sphere: a Conceptual Discussion on the Spatial Structure of Early Modern Istanbul
(Cambridge Univ Press, 2022) Savk, Serkan
The aim of this article is to offer a new conceptual framework for the study of various spaces in Istanbul during the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries. I contend that rather than the sharp distinction manifested with the public-private dichotomy, we need to focus on gradations of privacy. I offer qapu and bab as two new concepts borrowed from the period's own repertoire for representing the macro and micro ends of the spatial gradation. Theoretically, I draw on George Simmel's definition of doors as the interfaces of spatial formation.

Borrowed Soundtracks: Adopting the Global History Approach To the Study of Connectedness in Film History
(Routledge journals, taylor & francis ltd, 2024) Savk, Serkan
In this article, my goal is to reveal the importance and potential of global history, an approach that is generally neglected in media and film history literature. The main characteristics of global history are de-centralizing history, taking a wide spatial and temporal perspective, avoiding Eurocentric and nationalist optics, and explaining patterns of causalities behind connections. I begin by explaining global history before presenting the differences between global history and similar approaches used in film and media studies literature. Then, I focus on a potential case study, the phenomenon of foreign music used as soundtracks in Turkish domestic films between the 1950s and the 1980s. I demonstrate how the 'borrowed soundtracks' creates a hitherto unstudied connectedness between disconnected audiences from different countries or societies. I consider the soundscapes of the films as a space of aural encounter, and I argue that global history would enable us to understand the emotional, cultural, and economic layers of this indirect connectedness.

    Sessiz Dönem Türk Sinema Tarihi
    (2017) Şavk, Serkan
Ali Özuyar'ın Sessiz Dönem Türk Sinema Tarihi (1895-1922), bugüne kadar Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nda erken sinema tarihi hakkında yayınlanan en kapsamlı monografidir. Bu eleştiri yazısında, kitabın içeriğini kısaca tanıtıp literatürdeki önemine işaret ettikten sonra bazı eleştirel fikirler ifade edeceğim.

Mapping Yeşilçam: a Relational Approach To the Turkish Film Industry
(University Library System, University of Pittsburgh, 2021) Savk, S.; Dogu, B.
Turkey’s Yeşilçam film industry produced more than 5500 films during its 40-year lifetime. The industry had a unique narrative approach, shaped around its economic model, Turkey’s ambivalent connection with modernization and the country’s domestic culture. Yet, particular characteristic qualities of the industry remained rather limited until the last decade, in which vast databases emerged as a consequence of the digital turn. In this study, we develop a relational approach and conduct network analysis, with the aim to better understand the patterns of Yeşilçam’s constitution. Our findings suggest that, rather than a homogenous industry, as often considered by film scholarship, Yeşilçam was divided into two main clusters with significantly different professional, narrative and financial dynamics. © 2021, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh. Set-Going Chronicles: Rethinking Turkish Cinema Through the Lens of New Cinema History
(Michigan Publishing, 2025) Savk, Serkan; Cam, Aydin; Sanlier, Ilke
In this article, we propose set-going as a novel concept for studying the experience of visiting filming locations to watch the making of a film. This experience creates a field of interaction between movie enthusiasts and movie professionals. We argue that set-going should be considered as a new trajectory for studying the cultural and social history of cinema. Theoretically, we benefit from the New Cinema History paradigm. Departing from a case study of the Ye & scedil;il & ccedil;am era of Turkish cinema (1950s-1980s), we discuss the practice of set-going as embracing a wide range of social and cultural contexts surrounding the production process.

How Social Media Platforms Replace Film Archives When There Are No Archives
    (Routledge, 2025) Savk, Serkan
In the frst part of the chapter, I will share some notes regarding the history, narrative structure and production mode of the Yesilcam industry, which prevailed between the late 1940s and the 1980s, for the sake of providing some background information. Then, I will focus on the online release of Yesilcam flms on YouTube to reveal the dynamics of this recent development which radically changed the access conditions to these flms. Finally, I will explore the problematic aspects of accessing Yesilcam flms through YouTube, demonstrating the legal and commercial uncertainty surrounding the online presence of these flms. I will conclude by discussing how the flms on YouTube can sustain the life and legacy of Yesilcam in different ways.
