Contested Frames and the Media in Environmental Protests: Shifting the Geothermal Debate in the Turkish Aegean
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025-11-18) Dogu, Burak; Pasin, Begum
The Turkish Aegean hosts extensive geothermal resources, a very fertile agricultural land where a variety of distinct agricultural products are grown. Although the geothermal resources in the region offer an important potential for energy production, their exploitation has triggered protests due to its damaging impact on agriculture. In this study we explore how the news media and movement actors frame geothermal energy development in the region and examine the dynamics of frame contests under a competitive authoritarian regime. We analyze the movement organizations' tactics and strategies in counter-framing, revealing the factors affecting frame diffusion. Our findings indicate that the framing efforts are shaped by several factors including the capacity of civic organizations and their networking efforts, the locals' political orientation, demographic variations, opposition background, visible damage in the vicinity, and the extent of grievances.

Turkey's News Media Landscape in Twitter: Mapping Interconnections Among Diversity
(Sage Publications Inc, 2017-06-27) Dogu, Burak
Twitter plays a substantial role in shaping the online news media landscape, which is established on the interconnections between various actors. This research conducts network analysis in Twitter with the aim to explore Turkey's polarized news media landscape in the aftermath of the Gezi protests. The findings, based on a relational approach, are analyzed at four levels: identifying the actors, positioning the actors and examining connections among their clusters, exploring the patterns of news diffusion, and reviewing media polarization. It has been found that distinct conditions such as intermedia differences apply to each one of those levels, while polarization is evident in the network.

Who Sets the Agenda? Polarization and Issue Ownership in Turkey's Political Twittersphere
(Usc Annenberg Press, 2019) Doğu, Burak; Mat, Hazim Onur
Research on political agenda setting, in general, is interested in how issues are conveyed to the political agenda, and how governments tend to reflect on those issues. Media are assumed to have an effect on governmental policies; however, the extent to which media agenda influences the political agenda is ambiguous. Ambiguity is further exacerbated in predominant-party systems, where the media are more likely to be directly linked with the state. In this study, we examined whether the news media can still set the political agenda in a highly polarized political environment. In line with this, we applied the network agenda-setting model to Twitter, and compared the issues on the media and political agendas in Turkey. Findings indicate political parallelism as the major factor in defining the relationship between the issues and accounts. The results also show that in all cases the political agenda essentially preceded the media agenda.

Mobilizing in a Hybrid Political System: the Artvin Case in Turkey
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020-01-20) Ozen, Hayriye; Dogu, Burak
Hybrid political systems, which are neither rigorously liberal nor authoritarian, create ambiguous political environments for protests and social movements. We argue in this study that the power-resistance dynamics become more sophisticated within the ambiguous context of hybrid systems, such as the one in Turkey, where democratic channels are not totally suspended, but significantly weakened. Examining an episode of contention between an anti-mining movement and the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi, AKP) government on the issue of gold mining in Artvin, a city in the Northeastern Black Sea region, we demonstrate that in the electoral authoritarian context of Turkey the anti-mining movement gained a political role and significance well beyond its original specific aims, transforming into a conflict between those discontented with the authoritarian features of the existing system and the incumbents of that very system. Our study implies that social movements in hybrid political systems may turn into broader struggles not only because they open up political avenues for various groups to express their resentment with the prevailing undemocratic system, but also because the hegemonic forces attempt to consolidate the existing regime by mobilizing a popular support for the repression of these mobilizations.

Environmental Mobilizations Through Online Networks: An Analysis of Environmental Activism on Turkey's Twittersphere
(USC Annenberg Press, 2022) Dogu, Burak; Ozen, Hayriye; Pasin, Begum
This study explores and elucidates the nature and dynamics of environmental activism mediated via Twitter in Turkey. Drawing on the Twitter data, we show that two different forms of environmentalism are being pursued on this platform. There is, on the one hand, mainstream environmentalism of relatively established actors, and, on the other, confrontational/critical environmentalism of new actors. Unlike the former, the latter politicizes environmental issues to its full extent. While the actors pursuing mainstream environmentalism tend to act individually and use Twitter rather as a broadcast platform, the actors of confrontational/critical environmentalism form connections, interact, and engage in concerted action to voice environmental concerns, thereby incubating an environmental movement on Twitter within the increasingly authoritarian Turkish context. Our findings suggest that Twitter performs highly different functions within the same context depending on the discourses, identities, and interests of environmental actors.

Environment as Politics: Framing the Cerattepe Protest in Twitter
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017-12-07) Dogu, Burak
Environmental protests across the globe are often studied with a particular focus on their environmental aspects, but these protests are also embedded in a local political setting shaped by governmental policies. Recent environmental protests in Turkey, which appear to be based on ecological grievances, have developed as a response to political decisions that gave priority to economic development and national interests over environmental concerns. This study examines the political character of the environmental protest in Cerattepe, and focuses on the framing practices of its players in order to see if their motivations transcended environmental concerns. The research combines framing with network analysis, and studies the propagation of frames through Twitter. It has been found that the political economic aspects became predominant in the protest network, while the frames fostered dense connections between activist groups.

Mapping Yeşilçam: a Relational Approach To the Turkish Film Industry
(University Library System, University of Pittsburgh, 2021-12-14) Savk, S.; Dogu, B.
Turkey’s Yeşilçam film industry produced more than 5500 films during its 40-year lifetime. The industry had a unique narrative approach, shaped around its economic model, Turkey’s ambivalent connection with modernization and the country’s domestic culture. Yet, particular characteristic qualities of the industry remained rather limited until the last decade, in which vast databases emerged as a consequence of the digital turn. In this study, we develop a relational approach and conduct network analysis, with the aim to better understand the patterns of Yeşilçam’s constitution. Our findings suggest that, rather than a homogenous industry, as often considered by film scholarship, Yeşilçam was divided into two main clusters with significantly different professional, narrative and financial dynamics. © 2021, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh.
