| gperson.biography | Prof. Dr. Metiner Tosun received his bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Ege University (EU) in 1986 and completed his master’s degree in Pharmacology at the same university in 1989. He conducted his doctoral research in the United States at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine under the supervision of Prof. Robert M. Rapoport; in 1997, he earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics with his dissertation titled "Intracellular Calcium and Vascular Contraction: Evidence for Functional Compartmentalization." After completing his military service as assistant head of the Quality Control Laboratory at the Ankara Military Pharmaceutical Factory, he continued his academic career at the Faculty of Pharmacy at EU, as assistant professor (1998), associate professor (2000), and subsequently full professor (2009). Dr. Tosun moved to the Faculty of Medicine at İzmir Economy University (IUE) in 2016 and served as Chair of the Department of Medical Pharmacology since 2022. His research interests include the roles of TRPC ion channels in aging and carcinogenesis, with a particular focus on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which play a role in the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. In these areas, he has served as a principal investigator or researcher on more than 12 research projects supported by various national and international funding sources, notably TUBITAK. Among the current projects are “Functional genomic analysis of varenicline’s effects mediated by cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathways” (TUBITAK 225S489, 2025–2027, PI: E Barış), “Evaluation of cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway activation in patient-derived in vitro osteoarthritis models and an in vivo rat model” (TUBITAK 124S435, COST, European Cooperation in Science and Technology, 2024–2027, PI: Z. Fırtına) and “The Effect of the TRPV4 Calcium Channel on Osteogenic Differentiation” (İEÜ BAP 2024-09, 2024–2026, PI: M. Tosun). Dr. Tosun authored 36 peer-reviewed articles published in prestigious international journals such as the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, BMC Cancer, Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences ve Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology. He has filed one patent application (PCT/TR2022/050421) regarding the repurposing of varenicline as an anti-inflammatory agent in clinical treatment. As part of his administrative duties, he has served as the coordinator of the Farabi and Erasmus Exchange Programs at EU, as a member of the Clinical Research Ethics Committee at IUE, as a member of the Academic Review and Quality Assurance Committee, and as a member of the Faculty Board of Directors. Throughout his career, he has successfully supervised two doctoral and four master’s students; he has received various academic awards, including Cincinnati University Graduate Student Tuition Award (1994-1997) and Graduate Student Stipend Award (1996-1997) as well as the Novartis Turkey Pharmacology Research Awards (2007, 2011). Dr. Tosun, a member of the Turkish Pharmacology Association, possesses extensive technical expertise in isolated organ culture, flow cytometry, real-time cellular analysis, immunofluorescence microscopy, RNA interference, and whole genome transcription and sequencing technologies. | |
