Published by Elsevier B.V.Doctoral Thesis Mekansal Davranış Analizi Yoluyla İç Mekan Kullanımını İyileştirmeye Yönelik Bir Metodoloji: Tasarım Okulu Örneği(2025) Abraham, Selin Aktan; Deniz, DenizKullanıcıların iç mekanlardaki etkileşim örüntülerini yansıtan mekansal davranışın anlaşılması, kullanıcı ihtiyaçlarına yanıt veren etkili tasarım çözümlerinin geliştirilmesi açısından kritik öneme sahiptir. Ancak iç mimarlık alanında mekansal davranış, çoğunlukla nesnel ve teknoloji temelli araçlardan yoksun geleneksel yöntemlerle değerlendirildiğinden, bu durum, uyarlanabilir ve kanıta dayalı tasarım stratejilerinin geliştirilmesini sınırlamaktadır. Bu tez, mekânsal davranış analizine dayalı fiziksel tasarım müdahaleleriyle iç mekanların nasıl geliştirilebileceği sorusunu ele almaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, Kanıta Dayalı İç Mekan Analizi (EBIA) Modeli olarak adlandırılan özgün bir metodolojik çerçeve geliştirilmiştir. Bu model, mekansal davranışı kapsamlı biçimde değerlendirmek ve kamusal iç mekanların kullanımını iyileştirmek amacıyla, nesnel ve öznel verileri entegre etmektedir. Bilgi ve İletişim Teknolojileri (BİT) ve Kanıta Dayalı Tasarım (EBD) ilkelerine dayanan EBIA Modeli, kullanıcıların nesnel hareket örüntülerini izlemek için Kapalı Alan Konumlandırma Sistemleri (IPS) ile öznel mekânsal algılarını değerlendirmek için yapılandırılmış anketleri bir araya getiren karma yöntemli bir yaklaşım sunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda EBIA Modeli, İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar ve Tasarım Fakültesi (GSTF) Binası'nda, Endüstriyel Tasarım öğrencileriyle yürütülen bir vaka çalışmasında uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda, GSTF Binası'nın mekânsal verimliliğini arttırmaya yönelik tasarım rehberi geliştirilmiştir. The specific focus will be on the central business districts (CBDs) of global cities, as these areas have the greatest density of high-rises, it argues the quality of life provided through public green space in between tall buildings. The chapter reviews the characteristics of CBDs of global cities in terms of their public green space characteristics. The findings show that there has been a considerable effort to green the CBDs of global cities, especially in integrating waterfront developments and intelligent transportation systems integrated for connectivity within the sub-areas. However, not all cities have the same level of green infrastructure and connectivity, and this is deeply connected with the planning decisions regarding the prioritization of public green space in the planning of the CBD, as is mainly seen in the case of Istanbul. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Peng Du, Kheir Al-Kodmany, and Mir M. Despite the growing literature on co-design in various disciplines, there is a need for a comprehensive approach to co-design that explores different meanings and manifestations of communities that are under the influence of continuous change and transformation in urban areas. Our aim is to investigate (1) how the co-design process could be enhanced to foster community empowerment and (2) which design methods and tools could be explored to align with the paradigm shift towards a new model of co-design that aims to include biodesign, which sees nature as a co-creator and co-designer. This study proposes a new framework of community empowerment for a [re]-defined co-design management framework as an outcome of the collaboration between the local government and planning agencies and the Design School of Izmir University of Economics, Turkey. Methodological framework - derived from the Double Diamond diagram developed by the Design Council, illustrates a co-design system to integrate various actors; stakeholders (designers, local authorities, academics), community representatives (users, NGOs and civil initiatives, independent designers and artists). The findings address the opportunities to grasp the potential of co-design and generate new collaborations among actors including living organisms. This enables us to reconsider how co-design, as a knowledge management tool, can be utilized for empowering communities in urban areas, and to examine how it can be reframed for more livable urban environments. Through the construction of our framework, one of the crucial outcomes addresses the co-evolution that challenges the human-centered design paradigm and evolves it towards co-designing with living systems. Thus, the final framework becomes multi-scalar and multi-directional, and requires constant vertical and horizontal movement between, and within, various micro-, meso-, and macro-levels of knowledge interactions.Master Thesis Analysis of Sustainable Living Experiences Through Product Rangeand Home Furnishing Knowledge: the Case of Ikea(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2019) Yurt, Canberk; Deniz, DenizÇevresel problemler hakkında artan farkındalık ile, sürdürülebilirlik kavramı giderek önem kazanmaktadır. Sürdürülebilirliğin pratik bir yansıması olan sürdürülebilir yaşam kavramı, toplumun her birimi arasında, tamamlayıcı bir bağlam yaratarak, çevreye duyarlı yaşam biçimleri oluşturması nedeniyle çok önemlidir. Bu tez, tüketicilerin IKEA örneklemindeki sürdürülebilir yaşam pratiği bağlamında günlük yaşam deneyimlerini analiz etmektedir. Bu kapsamda, tüketicilerin bilgi tabanlı ve ürün tabanlı sürdürülebilir yaşam pratikleri ile etkileşiminin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, araştırma; literatür taraması yöntemi ile kolektif bilgi toplamak, ve bu verilerin ışığında hazırlanan anket aracılığıyla, tanımlı bir lokal alandaki tüketicilerin sürdürülebilir yaşam hakkındaki geri bildirimlerini almak, üzerine kurgulanmıştır. Ev mefruşatı konusunda öncü ve uzman bir marka olması, çevresel konulardaki hassasiyeti ve sürdürülebilirlik ve sürdürülebilir yaşam konularındaki kayda değer stratejileri nedeniyle, vaka çalışması için IKEA seçilmiştir. Anket sonuçları doğrultusunda, çevresel duyarlılık, IKEA ve sürdürülebilir yaşam ilişkisi, ve sürdürülebilir yaşamın bireysel uygulamaları konuları hakkında değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Bunların ışığında, sürdürülebilir yaşam pratiği bağlamında tüketicilerin bireysel farkındalığı ve IKEA 'nın potansiyel etki alanları ile ilgili gelişime açık yönler tanımlanmıştır. Thus, improving safety through environmental design and creating sustainable cities have become increasingly important all over the world. Places where people experience crime and fear of crime affect the image of the city in a negative way and diminish people's quality of life. In public areas where opportunities for crime or fear of crime is high, all fields of design have a crucial role to play in reducing opportunities for crime and improving safety in urban spaces, from environmental planning to the design of products. Reimagining cities and public spaces in a positive way, it is crucial to consider that cities as living organisms need to be safe and sustainable to live and work in. Although crime prevention through concepts of design is complex and hard to deal, with it is vital for designing safe and sustainable city images. In this respect, to achieve better solutions for communities as well as successful city images, public and environmental regulations have to be considered carefully. In this respect, designers, planners, politicians and decision makers must be able to assess which design solutions are better for the city and its image.Doctoral Thesis Zeytinin Kolektif Bilgisi Yoluyla Döngüsel Tasarımın İncelenmesi: Toroidality Modeli(2025) Yurt, Canberk; Deniz, DenizEkolojik kriz, insanmerkezci dünya görüşü sonucu doğal döngüleri dağtmakta, varlıklar arasındaki ağları zedelemekte ve ekosistemin dengesini bozmaktadır. Bu olumsuz etkileri tersine çevirebilmek için sürdürülebilirlik ve döngüsellik konseptleri, iyileştirici müdahalelerle cevap vermeye çalışmaktadır. Ancak, bu müdahaleler aynı insanmerkezci anlayış nedeniyle ekosistemi tamamen rejenere etmek ve ekolojik bütünlüğü korumak için yetersizdir. Dolayısıyla, ekolojik bütünlüğe ulaşmak için alternatif bir döngüsellik modeli önerilmesi gerekliliği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu tez, kolektif bilgi ve fenomenolojik referansların potansiyelini, insan ve insan-dışı varlıkların karşılıklı etkileşimini ve müştereklerin gücünü göz önünde bulundurarak bir döngüsel tasarım modelinin tasarımını, geliştirilmesini ve test edilmesini konu almaktadır. 'Toroidality' olarak adlandırılan bu model, kolektif bilgi ve kolektif değer yaratımının iç içe geçmiş döngüleri ile yapılandırılmış olup, metodolojisi katılımcı eylem araştırmasının ortak çalışma yaklaşımına dayanmaktadır. Toroidality'yi denemek ve değerlendirmek amacıyla 'Zeytinin Döngüsel Yolculuğu' adlı bir vaka çalışması tasarlanmıştır. Vaka çalışması kapsamında, Toroidality'nin aşamaları, bir uzman atölyesi ve üç ortak tasarım atölyesi eşliğinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Vaka çalışmasının sonunda, araştırma tasarımı, yöntemler, çıktılar, katılımcı dinamikleri, Toroidality'nin işleyişi ve kolektif bilginin kullanımı değerlendirilmiştir. Değerlendirmenin ardından, Toroidality, problem tanımı, kavramsal arka plan ve vaka çalışması ele alınarak kapsamlı bir şekilde tartışılmıştır. Bu tez, Toroidality'nin gelecekteki çalışmalarına, kolektif bilgi ve katılımcı eylemin döngüsel uygulamalardaki konumuna ve ekolojik bütünlük bağlamında döngüselliğe atıfta bulunularak sonuçlandırılmıştır.Article Participatory Action for and Through Ecological Integrity: Toroidality as a Circular Design Model(Institute for Research and Community Services, Institut Teknologi Bandung, 2025) Yurt, C.; Deniz, D.The ecological crisis corrupts natural cycles, damages networks of organisms, and disrupts the ecosystem equilibrium. In response to the ecological crisis, the concept of circularity proposes reformative actions. However, these actions are insufficient to reverse the crisis and achieve ecological integrity because they are non-holistic and based on human concerns and priorities. A more inclusive and integrative mindset is necessary for better-functioning circular processes. In this regard, this research presents a theoretical framework for an alternative circular design model – Toroidality – which is driven by collective knowledge and participatory action. Toroidality functions through the integrative capacity of collective knowledge and collaboration among human and non-human stakeholders in the ecosystem. Based on the intertwined cycles of collective knowledge and collective value-creation, Toroidality becomes a self-feeding circular design model. Through its four-phased circular design processes, Toroidality claims to generate solutions that have regenerative capacities. This article clarifies the conceptual background, theoretical framework and complementary notions to present the fundamentals of Toroidality. After this initial explanatory article, the dynamics of the phases and interactions among the stakeholders are aimed to be explored and reported in the following research, through a real-life case study. © 2025 Published by ITB Institute for Research and Community Services.Master Thesis A Social Innovation Model for a Transition To Circular Economy: "ti̇der" Case(İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi, 2019) Başkaya, Erdem Ferit; Deniz, DenizGünümüz ekonomik paradigmasında vazgeçilmez görünen büyüme, mevcut çıkart-üret-at doğrusal üretim ve tüketim ilişkisiyle dünyamızın sınırlı doğal kaynaklarının tükenmesine sebebiyet vermektedir. Sürdürülebilir bir gelecek için döngünün beşikten beşiğe stratejiyle kapanmasına gereksinim vardır. Yeni oluşmakta olan döngüsel ekonomi kavramı, yeniden kullanım, tamirat, yeniden imalat, tadilat, geri dönüşüm ve paylaşımı teşvik ederek, değerleri korumaya yönelik etkinlikleriyle, geleceğe dair daha akılcı sistemler için bir adım oluşturmaktadır. Sosyal inovasyon, sosyal girişimcilik ve sürdürülebilir tasarım düşüncesi, değer içeren atıkların yönetimi ve faydalı kaynaklara dönüştürülerek döngüye yeniden kazandırılmasını sağlayan döngüsel ekonomiye geçişte önemli bir rol oynayacaktır. Bu tezde niteliksel bir çalışmayla, döngüsel ekonomiye geçişte sosyal inovasyon modeli olarak Türk sivil toplum kuruluşu TİDER örneği analiz edilmiştir.
