    The Role of Paramedics in Disasters: Example of Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes
    (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023-11-10) Üstünkarlı, Nursun
    In this study, the crucial contributions of paramedics working in 112 ambulances during natural disasters, specifically focusing on their role in providing medical interventions for disaster victims who are trapped under debris or require assistance after being rescued is examined. Paramedics play a vital role in disaster scenarios, leveraging their emergency response expertise and proficiency in emergency medicine to offer substantial support. Since 2004, these paramedics have been fulfilling their duties across various ambulance types, including 112, A.K.S 110, and private ambulances, demonstrating their adeptness in transportation and rescue operations within the context of both natural and man-made disasters. They had the opportunity to showcase their emergency response skills during the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, which was labeled as the catastrophe of the century, impacting hundreds of thousands of individuals. © 2023 IEEE.

    Legal Awareness of Elderly About Abuse and Neglect
    (Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2016) Sisli, Zeynep; Kizil, Melahat; Ustunkarli, Nursun; Şemin, Makbule İlgi
    Introduction: The weakness and dependence of elders may expose them to abuse and neglect more than other age groups. This research aimed to evaluate legal awareness of elderly about which behaviors of abuse and neglect could be considered as criminal. Materials and Method: A questionnaire was administered during face-to-face interviews to 74 elderly people (>65 years of age) in a nursing home in Izmir. The statistical analysis of data was evaluated by SPSS 21. Results: Majority of the participants demonstrated legal awareness regarding physical and psychological behaviors that could be considered criminal, whereas many were unaware that these behaviors could be considered criminal even when the perpetrator acts unintentionally. Most of the participants were aware of increased penalties in cases where abuse or neglect is committed against those unable to defend themselves because of age; and for cases of torment. However it is also seen that many of them did not apply to legal ways when they experienced that type of behaviors. Conclusion: It is important to increase awareness regarding the criminal nature of abuse and neglect against elderly and to establish effective and easily accessible legal assistance.

    Design of a Smart Infusion Pump with Decision Support
    (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2025-10-26) Ustunkarli, Nursun; Tunakan, Berkay Ilber; Kizil, Melahat; Akan, Aydin
    Rapid and accurate drug administration is a critical process that directly affects patient outcomes in emergency medical services. In this study, a smart infusion pump was designed to support paramedics' decision-making by considering the patient's medical history, vital signs, and clinical condition. The design process was guided by literature reviews, interviews with ambulance teams, student internship feedback, and observations of protocol-based dosing errors. The pump identifies patient data via QR codes or integrated systems and offers algorithm-supported dosage suggestions with visual and audio guidance. The Quick Mode includes predefined protocols for common emergencies such as cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and hypoglycemia. The system can alert users about high-risk medications, recommend appropriate drug-dose-rate combinations, and issue automatic reminders for administration timing. Its user-friendly interface and LCD screen, operable in low light, ensure safe and effective use in the field. The device aims to support accurate dosage calculations using patient-specific data such as age, weight, height, and medical history.

    Design of an Intelligent Triage System Using Wearable Technologies
    (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2025-10-26) Cozar, Cansu; Ustunkarli, Nursun; Akan, Aydin; Cozar, Furkan
    In situations requiring emergency response, such as disasters and accidents, current triage processes are largely manual and rely on staff experience, making them prone to time loss and errors during high-volume events. Healthcare teams must measure and prioritize the vital signs of many injured individuals in a limited timeframe, and traditional methods (manual pulse checks, respiratory counts, consciousness checks, paper triage tags, etc.) are inconsistent, instantaneous, and static assessments. This can lead to overlooked deterioration in patient conditions, particularly in mass casualties.The aim of this study is to develop a simple smart wearable triage system that minimizes human errors.

    Development of an Laryngoscope With Aspiration Feature for Endotracheal Intubation Procedure
    (IEEE, 2022-10-31) Gonultas, I. Ozgun; Durgut, Ferhad; Karahan, Muhammed; Ustunkarli, Nursun; Kizil, Melahat
    Endotracheal intubation is the insertion of a flexible plastic tube into the trachea (windpipe) using a laryngoscope, a kind of imaging instrument, to ensure airway opening in various situations where breathing and oxygenation of the blood are prevented by the person or to administer certain drugs to the body. Some emergencies require immediate aspiration before intubation due to blood, vomit or airway secretions. This situation prolongs the intubation period, which should be done in very short periods, and creates serious problems for the doctors and paramedics who will intubate, and every second passes against the patient. Brain cells begin to die rapidly after 4-6 minutes of lack of oxygen. For these reasons, in this study, it was aimed to combine both equipment in a single equipment to perform endotracheal intubation in a short time and a laryngoscope with aspiration feature was developed. The prototype of the proposed system was prepared and functional tests were carried out.

    Concept Design Of Supportive Mechanism For Foldable Stretchers Used İn Ambulances;
    (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024-10-10) Üstünkarlı, Nursun; Kizil, Melahat; Türkan, Murat; Dülger, Lale Canan; Canan Dülger, L.
    Ambulance workers face many risks arising from the nature of the service they provide. One of these risks is musculoskeletal injuries. Manual use of ambulance stretchers requires transporting seriously ill patients, which can cause occupational diseases for pre-hospital medical staff. The aim of this study is to develop mechanism that can be placed on an existing ambulance stretcher so that the stretcher can be lifted and lowered without the need for manpower. This apparatus uses a rechargeable system without disrupting the mechanism of the stretcher. © 2024 IEEE.
