The effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the economic growth performance of mena countries

Abstract

Bu tez, doğrudan yabancı yatırımların (DYY) Orta Doğu ve Kuzey Afrika (ODKA) ülkelerinin ekonomik büyüme performansları üzerindeki etkisini, on ülkeden oluşan bir panel veri yardımı ile incelemektedir. Bu ülkelerin ileri teknoloji, fiziksel sermaye birikimi ve yetenekli işgücü açısından yeterli derecede gelişmemiş oldukları göz önünde bulundurularak, ve DYY'nin önemli bir teknoloji transferi, sermaye birikimi DYY'ın büyüme üzerinde olumlu bir etkisi olması beklenebilir. Bu yerel eksiklikler, bu bölgede yabancı yatırımcılar için iyi bir pazar potansiyeli oluşturmuş ve yabancı yatırımlar için çekici fırsatlar oluşturmuştur. Bu çalışma, DYY'ın büyüme üzerindeki etkisini ODKA bölgesinde 2001-2012 yılları arasıda ele almakta, ve ülke bazında ekonomik büyüme, DYY, ihracat, işsizlik, nüfus, şehirleşme, tarıma elverişli alan, doğal kaynaklar ve sermaye oluşumu değişkenlerini de kullanmakdadır. Ampirik sonuçlara ulaşmak için Panel-Veri Ekonometrisi yöntemleri (Sabit Etkiler Yöntemi ve Rastgele Etkiler Yöntemi) kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, ODKA bölgesi için doğrudan yabancı yatırımların önemli olduğunu, ve yabancı yatırımların bu bölgedeki ekonomik büyüme oranları üzerinde pozitif ve istatiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir

This thesis investigates whether foreign direct investment (FDI) influences the economic growth performance of MENA countries analysis on a panel dataset for 10 countries in the MENA region or not? Since these countries have insufficient development factors such as, new advanced technology, accumulated physical capital and well skilled labor force and in this sense, FDI should have a positive and significant effect on the economic growth performance of Middle East and North Africa countries because FDI is considered as the main important vehicle of new technology transfer, physical capital inflows and obtaining the most professional lobar force. Due to this facts and issues, the region has become a good market for foreign enterprises and it has provided many attractive incentives and opportunities for foreign companies to shift their investment towards MENA zone. The variables chosen in this paper are GDP growth, FDI, Exports, Unemployment, population, urbanization, GDP, Arable land, natural resources and gross capital formation percentage of GDP. For the time period, the data cover the sample period 2001-2012. Panel data models (Fixed Effects Model, Random Effects Model and pooled OLS) are applied to find the empirical results. According to our findings FDI is important for the region thus it has a positive and significant effect on the performance of economic growth in the MENA region.
