While numerous scientific studies focus on experimental investigations of pyrolysis using laboratory-scale devices, many neglect the essential role of thermal energy in initiating and controlling thermal decomposition processes. This study presents a transient two-dimensional numerical model of biomass single-particle pyrolysis, which includes the energy balance, mass conservation equations and pyrolysis gas pressure and velocity equations. The model employs explicit numerical methods to manage the high computational demands of 2D transient simulations, but is successfully validated with the use of experimental data found in the literature. The model reflects the heterogeneous structure of wood by using different thermal conductivity coefficients depending on the wooden fibers' orientation. The results demonstrate the impact of fiber orientation on the heat transfer and thermal decomposition processes. The anisotropic properties of wood led to varied temperature fields and pyrolysis decomposition stages, aligning well with experimental data, thus validating the model's accuracy. The proposed approach can provide a better understanding and lead to improvement in biofuel production processes, enabling more efficient and controlled conversion of biomass into fuel. By optimizing the pyrolysis process, it contributes to the development of sustainable energy preservation and regeneration methods, supporting a shift towards more sustainable fuel production patterns using renewable biomass resources like wood.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Aesthetic and Cultural Approach To the Change in the Making Techniques of Karagoz Figures(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2021) Öngen Corsini, Duygu EbruKaragoz developed as a unique culture in Anatolian lands. Despite many controversies about how Karagoz came into existence, there is a consensus that it emerged in the 16th century. Figures, as cultural objects, have production methods and techniques interwoven with the doctrines of the past. Today, figure-making for different purposes, inherited from the past, is present in Karagoz figure art. The aesthetic reflections, technique, and material harmony of the figures for show purposes must carry the cultural essence of Karagoz. This study examines museum collections and exhibitions, interviews with Karagoz masters, and a data analysis from an academic perspective. Considering these factors, it becomes clear that the training of masters for figure-making art is significant. Long-term training organized by institutions will contribute to this art and might be beneficial for good examples to reach the audience. However, before these systems are put into use, their efficacy should be verified. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study focusing on the evaluation of functional exercise capacity using the 30-s sit-to-stand (30-s STS) test as a tele-assessment method in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Aims The purpose of the study is to investigate the level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of 30-s STS test in patients with T2DM. Methods Fifty participants performed two times 30-s STS tests separated by 1 h: a face-to-face and an Internet-connected video call examination (tele-assessment). Two physiotherapists conduct these evaluations; each was blinded to the other. The order of the evaluations was designated at random for each participant and physiotherapist. Results There was a good level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of the 30-s STS test (mean differences = 0.20 +/- 0.88, limits of agreement =1.93 to - 1.53). Excellent interrater reliability was found for scores of the 30-s STS test [ICC = 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88; 0.96)]. In addition, all before and after test parameters show that there was a very good interrater reliability (rho >= 0.75). Conclusions This study shows a good level of agreement between tele-assessment and face-to-face assessment of the 30-s STS test. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was held virtually, which enabled attendees from around the world to hear about research efforts in Greece and the surrounding Mediterranean countries. Research updates spanned understanding the biology of, treatments for, and care of people with Alzheimer's disease (AD_ and other dementias. Researchers in the Mediterranean region have outlined the local epidemiology of AD and dementia, and have identified regional populations that may expedite genetic studies. Development of biomarkers is expected to aid early and accurate diagnosis. For the microbiological diagnosis of the disease, the most valid method is detecting the presence of the viral genome by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). However, due to the nature of the RNA viruses, frequent mutations may affect the sensitivity of the analyses made on the genetic material of the virus, such as PCR. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mutations in the primer-probe binding regions of the rRT-PCR panels used in COVID-19 diagnosis. SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequence data (n= 194) isolated from COVID-19 cases in Turkey and uploaded on GISAID database from the centers in Istanbul (n= 78), Ankara (n= 58), Kars (n= 47), Bursa (n= 2), Adiyaman (n= 2), Erciyes (n= 1) and Kocaeli (n= 1) between March 17-September 14, 2020 were analyzed. In order to determine the nucleotide changes, SARS-CoV-2 sequences from Turkey were compared to the reference genome sequence (NC_045512.1) present in GenBank website. The constructed data set was aligned using the MAFFT program and was checked manually if the sequences were in the same frame by using the AliView program. Primer-probe binding sites of the thirteen SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR panels from seven different institutes (US CDC, China CDC, Charite CDC, Pasteur, HKU, Thailand, NIID) that are being used in COVID-19 diagnosis were evaluated in terms of nucleotide changes within the corresponding regions compared to the reference genome. Sequence diversities in the viral genomes were determined via positional nucleotide numerical calculator and entropy calculator modules and nucleotide and entropy changes in primer-probe binding regions for each rRT-PCR panel were examined. Among thirteen different primer-probe panels, nucleotide changes in the target regions of the seven primer-probe panels were determined. When viral sequences with nucleotide changes in the primer-probe binding regions were examined, the most common changes were observed in the China CDC N-forward primer and US CDC N3-forward primer binding regions. It is important that the kits to be used as diagnostic tests are designed specific to the regions with less nucleotide changes. Nucleotide changes may not be critical for DNA amplification for most PCR panels, but should be carefully monitored as they may affect the sensitivity of the assay. If the risk of alteration of the designed region is high, the primer - probe binding sites should be checked frequently and updated when necessary.Article Attitudes of Nursing Senior Students Towards the Use of Computers in Healthcare and Related Factors(Association of Executive Nurses, 2022) Söylemez, B.A.; Özgül, E.; Akyol, M.A.; Küçükgüçlü, Ö.Aim: This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of nursing senior students towards the use of computers in healthcare and related factors. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 162 senior nursing students in a faculty of nursing at a university between June and July 2021. Data were collected with the “Participant Information Form” and “Attitudes toward Computers in Healthcare Assessment Scale.” The SPSS 25.0 package program was used to evaluate the data. Socio-demographic data were given as numbers, mean, percentages, and standard deviation. Number, mean, percentage distributions, independent groups t-test, Mann Whitney-U test, One-way ANOVA test, and Pearson correlation test were used to analyze the data. Results: In this research, 67.9% of the 162 students were females, and the mean age was 22.43±1.50 years. The mean score of the students on the scale was 15.65±8.91. Status of owning a computer (t=2.729, p<0.01), frequency of computer usage (u=637.500, p<0.01), level of knowledge in using a computer (F=13.410, p<0.001), and status of computer use in nursing practices (t=4.244, p<0.001) were found to affect attitudes of nursing students towards the use of computers in healthcare. Conclusion: Senior nursing students were found to have a moderate attitude towards using computers in healthcare. Adopting more positive attitudes towards this area will increase the quality of nursing care and provide easier access to clinical data and charts. © 2022 The Authors.Article Basic Science and Pathogenesis(2024) Noce, G.; Percio, C.D.; Lizio, R.; Lopez, S.; Jakhar, D.; Güntekin, B.; Babiloni, C.BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are both neurodegenerative conditions involving the basal ganglia area of the brain. Both conditions can cause symptoms that affect movement. Cognitive decline or dementia can also occur in both. Resting state EEG (rsEEG) rhythms reflect neurophysiological mechanisms and operational functions related to the fluctuation of brain arousal and quiet vigilance in humans. The hypothesis was that rsEEG sources may be more abnormal in Huntington's disease patients in symptomatic stage (S-HD) than patients with dementia due to Parkinson's disease. METHOD: Clinical and rsEEG datasets in 16 PDD, 18 S-HD, and 25 matched cognitively unimpaired (Nold) participants - matched as demography, education, and gender - were taken from an international archive. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources at delta, theta, alpha1, alpha2, alpha3, beta1, beta2, and gamma frequency bands. RESULT: Results showed lower amplitude of the posterior alpha activities and higher amplitude of widespread low frequencies bands (i.e., delta and theta) in the PDD and S-HD groups than in the Healthy group. As compared to the PDD group, the S-HD showed greater reductions in the rsEEG alpha 2 rhythms in the frontal and temporal regions (see Figure 1). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that cortical sources of rsEEG rhythms might reflect different abnormalities of the core neurophysiological mechanisms underlying brain arousal in quiet wakefulness and low vigilance in PDD, and S-HD patients. Numerous studies have proposed ECG denoising; however, they naturally fail to restore the actual ECG signal corrupted with such artifacts due to their simple and naive noise model. In this pilot study, we propose a novel approach for blind ECG restoration using cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks (Cycle-GANs) where the quality of the signal can be improved to a clinical level ECG regardless of the type and severity of the artifacts corrupting the signal. Methods: To further boost the restoration performance, we propose 1D operational Cycle-GANs with the generative neuron model. Results: The proposed approach has been evaluated extensively using one of the largest benchmark ECG datasets from the China Physiological Signal Challenge (CPSC-2020) with more than one million beats. Besides the quantitative and qualitative evaluations, a group of cardiologists performed medical evaluations to validate the quality and usability of the restored ECG, especially for an accurate arrhythmia diagnosis. Significance: As a pioneer study in ECG restoration, the corrupted ECG signals can be restored to clinical level quality. Conclusion: By means of the proposed ECG restoration, the ECG diagnosis accuracy and performance can significantly improve.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 11Can Popular AI Large Language Models Provide Reliable Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Rotator Cuff Tears(Elsevier, 2025) Kolac, Ulas Can; Karademir, Orhan Mete; Ayik, Gokhan; Kaymakoglu, Mehmet; Familiari, Filippo; Huri, GaziBackground: Rotator cuff tears are common upper-extremity injuries that significantly impair shoulder function, leading to pain, reduced range of motion, and a decrease in quality of life. With the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence large language models (AI LLMs) for health information, it is crucial to evaluate the quality and readability of the information provided by these models. Methods: A pool of 50 questions was generated related to rotator cuff tear by querying popular AI LLMs (ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, Gemini, and Microsoft CoPilot) and using Google search. After that, responses from the AI LLMs were saved and evaluated. For information quality the DISCERN tool and a Likert Scale was used, for readability the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for Printable Materials (PEMAT) Understandability Score and the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease Score was used. Two orthopedic surgeons assessed the responses, and discrepancies were resolved by a senior author. Results: Out of 198 answers, the median DISCERN score was 40, with 56.6% considered sufficient. The Likert Scale showed 96% sufficiency. The median PEMAT Understandability score was 83.33, with 77.3% sufficiency, while the Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score had a median of 42.05 with 88.9% sufficiency. Overall, 39.8% of the answers were sufficient in both information quality and readability. Differences were found among AI models in DISCERN, Likert, PEMAT Understandability, and Flesch-Kincaid scores. Conclusion: AI LLMs generally cannot offer sufficient information quality and readability. While they are not ready for use in medical field, they show a promising future. There is a necessity for continuous reevaluation of these models due to their rapid evolution. Developing new, comprehensive tools for evaluating medical information quality and readability is crucial for ensuring these models can effectively support patient education. Future research should focus on enhancing readability and consistent information quality to better serve patients. (c) 2024 The Author(s). Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes of neonates with mild versus moderate/severe HIE. Maternal, perinatal, and neonatal characteristics along with treatments were documented. Neurological outcomes were assessed via brain MRI, the Ankara Developmental Screening Inventory (ADSI), and developmental milestones. Results: The study included 42 infants, 20 (47.6%) were classified as having mild HIE and 22 (52.4%) as moderate/severe HIE. Baseline characteristics were similar except that moderate/ severe cases had lower 1-minute Apgar scores (median 4 vs. 6; P = .02) and more frequent need for advanced resuscitation (68% vs. 25%; P = .006). All moderate/severe infants received TH vs. none in the mild group. Invasive mechanical ventilation and adjuvant neuroprotective agents were also more frequently used in the moderate/severe group. Magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities consistent with HIE were present in 2/12 mild cases (16.7%) vs. 8/19 (42.1) in moderate/severe cases. There were no significant differences in HIE injury pattern between the 2 groups (P = .197). On ADSI screening, 8/12 (66.7%) mild HIE survivors showed gross motor delay compared with 5/7 (71.4%) moderate/severe survivors. Conclusion: Even infants with mild HIE are at risk of adverse neurological outcomes. The development of more sensitive diagnostic tools could improve treatment strategies and early interventions, ultimately impacting prognosis. With proper recognition, tailored follow-up, and appropriate therapeutic approaches, potential neurodevelopmental impairments in mild HIE cases could be mitigated.Article The Characterization of Nelson Algebras by Sheffer Stroke(Sciendo, 2025) Öner, T.; Katican, T.; Borumand Saeid, A.B.In this study, Sheffer stroke Nelson algebras (briefly, s-Nelson algebras), (ultra) ideals, quasi-subalgebras, quotient sets, and fuzzy structures on these algebraic structures are introduced. The relationships between s-Nelson and Nelson algebras are analyzed. It is also shown that an s-Nelson algebra is a bounded distributive modular lattice, and the family of all ideals forms a complete distributive modular lattice. A congruence relation on an s-Nelson algebra is determined by an ideal and quotient s-Nelson algebras are constructed by this congruence relation. Emerging research has revealed variations in digit span performance across languages among young adults; however, studies focusing on older populations are scarce and typically involving limited languages. This study investigates digit span performance among older adults (40-90 year-old) across fourteen languages and explored the influence of lexical and numerical properties on cognitive assessment. METHOD: We examined digit span performance among cognitively normal participants (CN), individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) across fourteen language cohorts totalling 3,681 participants: English (n = 446), Mandarin (n = 97), Cantonese (n = 65), Spanish (n = 218), Kannada (n = 69), Hindi (n = 72), Telugu (n = 69), Malayalam (n = 70), Bengali (n = 70), French (n = 299), Korean (n = 1098), Italian (n = 540), Arabic (n = 50), and Turkish (n = 518). First, we analyzed language differences in digit span performance among CN using ANOVA and general linear models. We then conducted Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses to identify the optimal cutoff values for AD. Next, we computed the digit count, syllable count, and numerical magnitude (i.e. the average sum of the digits) of all digit stimuli in the English cohort and analyzed their effects via linear and ridge regression analyses. RESULT: The forward (FDS) and backward digit span (BDS) tests revealed significant differences among CN across the fourteen language cohorts even after adjusting for age and education (FDS:F=38.62, p <0.001; BDS:F=19.23, p <0.001). ROC analysis revealed varying optimal cutoff values across languages: English (FDS:6, BDS:4), Italian and Turkish (FDS:5, BDS:4), Mandarin (FDS:7, BDS:5), Cantonese (FDS:7, BDS:4), and French (FDS:6, BDS:3). Further analysis indicated that the interaction between digit and syllable counts significantly impacted FDS accuracy in English speakers (linear:p=0.00035; ridge:p< 0.000001), with no significant effect from digit count alone after adjusting for interaction. Conversely, BDS performance showed a significant negative influence from digit count (p = 0.00858), with numerical magnitude and syllable count nearing significance (p = 0.083 and p = 0.066, respectively). CONCLUSION: Variations in digit span performance across languages illustrate the role of linguistic and numerical factors in cognitive assessments, even with tests targeting non-language domains using digit stimuli. These findings underscore the critical value of language diversity in cognitive research. © 2025 The Alzheimer's Association. Depression may lead to impairments in cognitive abilities. The P300 potential is one of the most used event-related potentials (ERPs) to evaluate cognition. This study investigated the P300 amplitude differences between individuals with depressive symptoms and nondepressed healthy elderly individuals. Materials and Methods:The current study included twenty individuals with high depression scores (high DS, age: 64.80 +/- 7.22, 6 M/14 F) and twenty demographically matched participants with low depression scores (low DS, age: 64.20 +/- 6.21, 7 M/13 F). The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to evaluate whether participants have depressive symptoms. All of the participants were underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. The ERPs were recorded with a visual classical oddball paradigm. The P300 amplitudes were measured in the 250-550 ms time window. Results:High DS group had lower P300 amplitudes than low DS individuals regardless of electrode location. Correlation analyses showed that there was a significant correlation between GDS scores and the P300 amplitudes recorded from the F-z electrode. Conclusion:The current study showed the reduced P300 amplitudes on individuals with high GDS scores. The P300 potential may be a useful tool to determine possible changes or impairments due to subthreshold depressive symptoms.Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 25A Combined Ulbp2 and Sema5a Expression Signature as a Prognostic and Predictive Biomarker for Colon Cancer(Ivyspring Int Publ, 2017) Demirkol, Secil; Gomceli, Ismail; Isbilen, Murat; Dayanc, Baris Emre; Tez, Mesut; Bostanci, Erdal Birol; Turhan, NesrinBackground: Prognostic biomarkers for cancer have the power to change the course of disease if they add value beyond known prognostic factors, if they can help shape treatment protocols, and if they are reliable. The aim of this study was to identify such biomarkers for colon cancer and to understand the molecular mechanisms leading to prognostic stratifications based on these biomarkers. Methods and Findings: We used an in house R based script (SSAT) for the in silico discovery of stage-independent prognostic biomarkers using two cohorts, GSE17536 and GSE17537, that include 177 and 55 colon cancer patients, respectively. This identified 2 genes, ULBP2 and SEMA5A, which when used jointly, could distinguish patients with distinct prognosis. We validated our findings using a third cohort of 48 patients ex vivo. We find that in all cohorts, a combined ULBP2/SEMA5A classification (SU-GIB) can stratify distinct prognostic sub-groups with hazard ratios that range from 2.4 to 4.5 (p <= 0.01) when overall-or cancer-specific survival is used as an end-measure, independent of confounding prognostic parameters. In addition, our preliminary analyses suggest SU-GIB is comparable to Oncotype DX colon (R) in predicting recurrence in two different cohorts (HR: 1.5-2; p <= 0.02). SU-GIB has potential as a companion diagnostic for several drugs including the PI3K/mTOR inhibitor BEZ235, which are suitable for the treatment of patients within the bad prognosis group. We show that tumors from patients with worse prognosis have low EGFR autophosphorylation rates, but high caspase 7 activity, and show upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines that relate to a relatively mesenchymal phenotype. Conclusions: We describe two novel genes that can be used to prognosticate colon cancer and suggest approaches by which such tumors can be treated. In 2.5% to 13% of cases, nonunion is observed, and it leads to severe pain and morbidity. Plate osteosynthesis has become popular in the treatment of nonunion of the humeral shaft. In this study, we compared the clinical outcomes of patients with humerus shaft nonunion whom we treated with single- or double-plate fixation. Materials and Methods: Fifty-three patients diagnosed with aseptic humeral shaft nonunion and treated with plate fixation were included in the study. Patients were evaluated according to the number of plates (single vs. double plates). The two groups were subjected to statistical evaluation according to their clinical and radiographical results. Results: The average age of the patients was 53 years (range: 1-86); 28 (52.8%) were female and 25 (47.2%) were male. The union rate was 90.32% for single plate and 90.91% for double plate fixation. There was no statistically significant difference between single and double plates in the clinical and radiographical results (union time, union rate, Q-DASH score) (p > 0.05). There was a significant correlation between age and union times / Q-DASH scores according to the Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05). Transient radial nerve neuropraxia developed in 2 patients and 1 patient suffered from an infection that was treated with debridement and antibiotic therapy. Conclusion: In our study, similar good results were obtained with single and double plates. K.The FCC-e(+)e(-) injector complex needs to produce and to transport a high-intensity e(+)/e(-) beam at a fast repetition rate of about 0.1 Hz for topping up the collider at its collision energy. A basic parameter set exists for all the collider energies, assuming a 10 GeV linac operating with a large number of bunches being accumulated in the existing SPS, which serves as pre-accelerator and damping ring before the bunches are transferred to the high-energy booster. The purpose of this study is to provide the conceptual design of an alternative accelerator ring, replacing the SPS in the present scheme. This ring will have injection energy of 6 GeV and extraction energy of 20 GeV. In this study, the basic parameters of the ring are established, including the optics design and layout. Preliminary consideration for non-linear dynamics optimization and the impact of intra beam scattering are also presented.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Correlation and Agreement Between the Score2 and Prevent 10-Year Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Scores: Insights From Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography(Mdpi, 2024) Ozpelit, Mehmet Emre; Colak, Ayse; Uzumcu, Hatice Irem; Kumral, Zeynep; Ozpelit, EbruBackground: We aimed to evaluate the correlation and agreement between the Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation 2 (SCORE2) and Predicting Risk of CVD EVENTs (PREVENT) 10-year ASCVD risk scores by incorporating computed tomographic (CT) data to assess differences between the scoring systems. Methods: The PREVENT risk score was calculated for 171 patients, while the SCORE2 and SCORE2 Older Persons (OP) risk scores were calculated for 113 patients. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores were calculated, and the grading of coronary artery disease (CAD) was assessed according to these scores. Results: According to the PREVENT risk category, 79 patients (46.2%) were in the low-risk category, 32 (18.7%) were in the borderline-risk category, and 51 (29.8%) were in the intermediate-risk category. In contrast, the SCORE2 systems placed 32 patients (28.3%) in the low- to moderate-risk categories. Only 9 patients (5.3%) were classified as being at high risk by PREVENT, while SCORE2 categorized 39 patients (34.5%) as being at high risk and 42 patients (37.2%) as being at very high risk. There was a strong correlation between the scores (r = 85, p < 0.001), with a Bland-Altman plot analysis showing a bias of -3.71 points and the limits of agreement ranging from -16.06 to 8.64. The total CAC score and CAD grading were significantly different across the PREVENT risk groups (p < 0.001 for all) but were similar across the SCORE2 groups (p = 0.3 and p = 0.051, respectively). Conclusions: There is a strong correlation and agreement between the two risk scores. However, SCORE2 tends to categorize more patients as high-risk than PREVENT does. Son y ıllarda, özel- likle şiddetli HHT formlarının tedavisi için hedefe yönelik tedavilere olan ilgi artmaktadır. Bu tedavi seçeneklerinden biri de vasküler endotelyal bü- yüme faktörü inhibitörü bevasizumabtır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, HHT tanısı alan hastalarda sistemik bevasizumab kullanımının kronik kanama seyri ve anemi tedavisindeki etkisini ara ştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bevasi- zumab kullanan hastaların tedavi yanıtı ve yan etkileri retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Hastaların yaş ortalaması 51,5 yıl idi. Ortalama tedavi süresi 15,4 (4-25 ay) aydı. Tüm hastalara 2 hafta arayla ilk 4 doz 5 mg/kg intravenöz bevasizumab uygulandı. Bevasizumab idamesi 5 mg/kg dozunda aylık periyotlarla devam etti. Bevasizumab tedavisi ile hemoglo- bin değerlerinde artış, epistaksis şiddet skorunda parenteral demir ve erit- rosit transfüzyon gereksiniminde azalma sağlandı. Gözlenen yan etkiler, 1 hastada alerjik döküntü ve 1 hastada artralji idi. Yan etkiler nedeniyle hiç- bir hastada tedavinin kesilmesi gerekmedi. Sonuç: Bevasizumab, kontrol edilmediği takdirde ölümcül olabilen HHT’de umut verici bir tedavi seçe- neğidir. We characterized brain health using brain clocks, which capture deviations from chronological age (i.e., accelerated or delayed brain aging). We combined M/EEG functional connectivity (N = 1,240) with machine learning support vector machines, whole-brain modeling, and Neurosynth metanalyses. From this framework, we reanalyzed previously published datasets of expert and matched non-expert participants in dance, music, visual arts, and video games, along with a pre/post-learning study (N = 232). We found delayed brain age across all domains and scalable effects (expertise>learning). The higher the level of expertise and performance, the greater the delay in brain age. Age-vulnerable brain hubs showed increased connectivity linked to creativity, particularly in areas related to expertise and creative experiences. Neurosynth analysis and computational modeling revealed plasticity-driven increases in brain efficiency and biophysical coupling, in creativity-specific delayed brain aging. Findings indicate a domain-independent link between creativity and brain health.Article Citation - Scopus: 3A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach To Othering: Depiction of the Syrian Refugee Experience in Turkish Children's Literature(University of Zadar, 2021) Kansu Yetkiner, NeslihanThis paper is a critical examination of discursive strategies of othering in three refugee-focused books in Turkish children's literature written after the onset of Syrian civil war. Drawing upon Van Dijk's ideological analysis, eliciting the representation of "us vs. them" in a network of semantic and formal structures, the study has two closely related main aims. The first is to show how children's literature, as a significant conveyor of norms, values, and ideology, provides fertile ground to examine power relations. The second is to identify discursive strategies of othering, which categorize and underscore group-based differences by attributing negative characteristics, in three Turkish children's books about the Syrian war. Findings demonstrate that negative representation of the Other is foregrounded by actor description, lexicalization, and implicitness within the framework of semantic structures. Formal structures resonate with topoi under the umbrella of argumentation and rhetoric, with special emphasis upon allegory. © 2021 University of Zadar. All rights reserved.
