Analyzing Leed With Comparison To Other Building Assessment Systems: California Academy of Sciences as a Case Study
Tezin amacı, LEED in diğer bina değerlendirme sistemleri üzerindeki bahsedilen avantajlarını seçilen örnek alan çalışması California Academy of Sciences binası yardımıyla öne çıkarmaktır.

Exploring Literary Space Through 'the Spatial Triad' by Henri Lefebvre in the Museum of Innocence

An Interdisciplinary Approach To the Design Studio: Poetry as a Complementary Feature To the Creative Process
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2012) Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
In this study, we aim to display the results of an interior architecture studio experience, which was structured on an interdisciplinary approach by linking literature and design. In order to establish this interdisciplinary ground and utilize the potential of fruitful creative connections by establishing an association between distinct fields, poetry was selected as a tool to provide inspirational grounds for students to achieve 'other ways of seeing. Thus, we structured this study on the idea of potential contribution of literary text and related design concepts evoked, to the creative process of interior architecture education. Looking Into Mid-Century Modern Furniture Design in Turkey Through Oral History
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francıs Ltd, 2024) Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; Hasırcı, Deniz; Atmaca, Hande
Furniture design has traditionally taken second place to architecture in historiography, especially in Turkey. The consequent limited furniture-related academic publications, original material, and documentation make it necessary to probe further into Turkey's modern furniture history. The DATUMM (Documenting and Archiving Turkish Modern Furniture) Project (datumm.org) (2013-) was initiated to help fill this gap in the history of modern furniture design in Turkey between 1930 and 1975. Other than highlighting furniture, the documentary aimed to initiate an oral history project that has not been conducted in the design realm before in Turkey. Oral history interviews were conducted with thirteen contributors, including designers, artisans, and producers, who have significantly influenced Turkish modern furniture design. This method gave a voice to those who have not been able to contribute to Turkey's design history and reveals individual stories to construct a more comprehensive narrative. These interviews thus provide valuable opportunities to grasp what is hidden in the written history, and understand the shared stories, experiences, and struggles of designers to create a flourishing discipline from almost nothing.

Materiality of Mid-Century Modern Furniture in Turkey
(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2021) Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; Hasirci, Deniz; Atmaca, Hande
The modern interior emerged as a complex phenomenon, an interchange of modernity and its materiality. One of the constituent elements of this complexity is the progressive relationship with technology. This paper explores the materiality of furniture in terms of its material qualities, production technologies, craft component and inefficacies. The paper focuses on mid-century modern furniture in Turkey as a unique example in the history of furniture design, especially in terms of materiality. In order to understand the material qualities of this historical context, oral history provided a vital methodological tool to uncover the philosophy behind production, contemporary conditions and the designers' personal experiences through their own words. This enables the study to add significantly to the limited knowledge about modern furniture and especially materials in Turkey. The analysis is divided into three parts: materials, production technologies and difficulties. By investigating the material qualities of a furniture piece, the study extends beyond mere forms or styles to cultural productions that narrate the country's efforts to develop and thrive. In addition, it reveals the evolution of both materials and manufacturing techniques. Finally, by connecting these stories to specific furniture pieces, this study documents furniture not just as an artefact but also as the final product of an assemblage of people, materials, and techniques.

Mid-Century Modern Furniture Representing Modern Ideals in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
(Wiley Periodicals, Inc, 2020) Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
This study focuses on how the modern furniture designed for Turkey's third parliament building, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, represented the country's new modern ideals by breaking with its Ottoman heritage. While the architecture of this building has been studied, there are no assessments of its interiors and furniture as integral elements. This study uses archival research and interviews with interior designers who worked on the project. The findings shed light on how modernization was brought to life through the spaces and furniture in this powerful, symbolic building.

The Multiple Stories Behind the Modern Ceramic Coffee Tables of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey
(Oxford Univ Press, 2020) Hasirci, Deniz; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna
At the end of the 1950s, 200 coffee tables and other furniture and fittings were created by interior designers who won a design competition organized by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) in Ankara. The tables were envisioned to be made by modern ceramic artists and designers of the time. Despite never meeting, they created joint works that were celebrated at the time for their artistic quality. The coffee tables, which were used by government ministers, were useful for introducing ceramics into government interiors while informing the leaders of a modernizing Turkish nation about modern art. This study traces the stories behind the creation of these unique artworks based on the personal stories of Fureya Koral, Sadun Ersin, and the Taylan Ceramics Atelier, who were all significant contributors to the history of this furniture. The method used included literature review, a comprehensive archival research through popular magazines, and interviews with artists and designers of the time. The interviews helped uncover data that could not be accessed otherwise. The findings contribute to Turkish and international design history, uncovering artworks and identifying modernist artists and designers of the time in Turkey.

Reflections of the Istanbul Hilton Hotel on Mid-Century Hotel Buildings in Turkey
(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2019) Atmaca, Hande; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; Uz, Funda
The 1950s indicate a period of America's influence on the world economy and culture with its post-war power. Mobility increased with developing transportation networks and emerging consumer culture, so the number and importance of hotels increased as a result of this socio-political, economic and architectural condition of the period. In the 1950s, American chain hotels emerged, and soon spread overseas, following the dominant aesthetics of the country, a version of the International Style termed as American Modernism. The spread of International Style through modern hotels was most prominent in Hilton Hotels. The first modern hotel to arrive in Turkey was the Istanbul Hilton Hotel which influenced other hotel buildings in the 1950s to follow the International Style. The Hilton Hotel was frequently accepted as a model behind the tourism discussions and the initiatives that followed were compared with it, although the spread of its architectural language created a debate in architectural circles. For this reason, the focal point of this study is the hotel buildings designed in the International Style between 1950 and 1960, which possess architectural similarities with the Hilton Hotel. The influence of the Hilton Hotel on other hotel buildings in the 1950s is investigated along with the period's tourism discussions to have a wider perspective of the Hilton Hotel's influence on tourism. The hotels selected for the study are ones that carry the aesthetical principles of the Hilton Hotel, and were built or started construction in 1950s; Buyukada Anadolu Club Hotel, Cinar Hotel, Eskisehir Porsuk Hotel, Grand Efes Hotel, and Grand Tarabya Hotel. These examples illustrate the effects of the Hilton Hotel on the development of modern tourism architecture.

Socio-Spatial Analysis of Urban Renewal in the Case of Relocating Kadifekale Inhabitants To Toki Uzundere

A Socio-Spatial Analysis of Urban Transformation at a Neighborhood Scale: the Case of the Relocation of Kadifekale Inhabitants To Toki Uzundere in Izmir
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2015) Demirli, Meltem Eranil; Ultav, Zeynep Tuna; Demirtas-Milz, Neslihan
Particularly in the last two decades, urban governors have presented urban transformation projects as ideal solutions to help low-income urban residents improve their living conditions. However, the way they have been carried out and their consequences mean that these projects do not, in most cases, bring the expected improvements. Most projects involve relocating residents to new, more peripheral districts of the city, which causes social isolation and certain socio-spatial incompatibilities between their previous and new habitats. Using a case from Izmir in Turkey, this study aims to analyze such socio-spatial incompatibilities in the lives of low-income residents that are caused by relocation within the framework of urban transformation projects. One of Izmir's earliest inner-city gecekondu neighborhoods, Kadifekale was chosen by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality as a site for urban transformation due to the risk of landslide in the area. Before the start of the project, the neighborhood contained 7324 housing units accommodating rural-to-urban migrants, mainly from the southeast of Turkey. This urban transformation project aimed to relocate at least some of the inhabitants from their homes in Kadifekale to recently constructed apartment blocks in the TOKI Uzundere Public Housing Project on the periphery of the city. Although many residents were reluctant to exchange their houses for new apartments, some were persuaded to move to TOKI, which was presented as the ideal solution by the municipal officials. This study critically evaluates the Kadifekale urban transformation project, particularly with regard to the relocation of some Kadifekale residents from their one- or two-story houses in Kadifekale to apartment blocks on the periphery of the city. The analysis is based on a comparison between the socio-spatial experiences of migrants in Kadifekale and their recent experiences in Uzundere and the possibility of certain incompatibilities in these two experiences. The argument aims to demonstrate the changed conditions of social life and daily life practices as a result of altered spatial properties at a neighborhood scale: their use of outdoor spaces, the meanings they attributed to neighborhood space (intimacy of place within categories of sensual (visual and olfactory) recognition), and their sociospatial network. The argument draws both implicitly and explicitly on Henri Lefebvre's spatial triad and De Certeau's conceptualization of tactic versus strategy as the major conceptual inspirations for this study.
