Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 20The Sarmanov Family and Its Generalization(South African Statistical Assoc, 2001) Bairamov, I; Kotz, S; Gebizlioglu, OLA general class of bivariate distributions is introduced. This class includes the so-called San-nanov-Lee class (and consequently the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern class). It is shown that using procedures described in the paper it is possible to construct distributions of the FGM form for which the correlation coefficient between the marginals can achieve values close to +/-0.6.Article Citation - WoS: 77Citation - Scopus: 83Dependence Structure and Symmetry of Huang-Kotz Fgm Distributions and Their Extensions(Physica-Verlag Gmbh & Co, 2002) Bairamov I.; Kotz, SAn extension of FGM class of bivariate distributions with given marginals is presented. For Huang-Kotz FGM distributions some theorems characterizing symmetry and conditions for independence are obtained. The new family of distributions allows us to achieve correlation between the components greater than 0.5.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10Special Precovers in Cotorsion Theories(Cambridge Univ Press, 2002) Akinci, Karen D.; Alizade, RA cotorsion theory is defined as a pair of classes Ext-orthogonal to each other. We give a hereditary condition (HC) which is satisfied by the (flat, cotorsion) cotorsion theory and give properties satisfied by arbitrary cotorsion theories with an HC. Given a cotorsion theory with an HC, we consider the class of all modules having a special precover with respect to the first class in the cotorsion theory and show that this class is closed under extensions. We then raise the question of whether this class is resolving or coresolving.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11On a New Sample Rank of an Order Statistics and Its Concomitant(Elsevier Science Bv, 2003) Eryılmaz, Serkan; Bairamov, IGThe marginal and joint distributions of the new sample rank of an order statistic and its concomitant are derived. This function can characterize the dependence structure of two random variables localized at the fixed point. Some properties of the local dependence function are given. Examples of important bivariate distributions are provided.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Some Properties of the Cauchy-Type Integral for the Laplace Vector Fields Theory(Amer Inst Physics, 2004) Schneider, B; Shapiro, MWe study the analog of the Cauchy-type integral for the Laplace vector fields theory in case of a piece-wise Liapunov surface of integration and we prove the Sokhotski-Plemelj theorem for it as well as the necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility to extend a given Holder function from such a surface up to a Laplace vector field. Formula for the square of the singular Cauchy-type integral is given. The proofs of all these facts are based on intimate relations between Laplace vector field and some versions of quaternionic analysis.Conference Object Micro-G Architecture - an Innovative Design and Education Experience in Turkey(American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2004) Wilsing M.; Anilir S.; Wılsıng, NilThis paper aims to introduce the space architecture education at Bilkent University in Turkey. Architecture and engineering have common interests in Earth infrastructure development; as the space, considered as a new and challenging environment can help the students to undertake difficult tasks in developing space stations and various space structures for habitation purposes.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 22On the Distribution and Expectation of Success Runs in Nonhomogeneous Markov Dependent Trials(Springer, 2005) Eryılmaz, SerkanThe number of success runs for nonhomogeneous markov dependent trials are represented as the sum of Bernoulli trials and the expected value of runs are obtained by using this representation. The distribution and bounds for the distribution of the longest run are derived for markov dependent trials.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Exactly Solvable Pairing Model Using an Extension of the Richardson-Gaudin Approach(World Scientific Publ Co Pte Ltd, 2005) Balantekin, AB; Dereli, T; Pehlivan, YWe introduce a new class of exactly solvable boson pairing models using the technique of Richardson and Gaudin. Analytical expressions for all energy eigenvalues and the first few energy eigenstates are given. In addition, another solution to Gaudin's equation is also mentioned. A relation with the Calogero-Sutherland model is suggested.Article Citation - WoS: 70Citation - Scopus: 86A Note on the Mean Residual Life Function of a Parallel System(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2005) Asadi, M; Bayramoğlu, İ.One of the most important types of system structures is the parallel structure. In the present article, we propose a definition for the mean residual life function of a parallel system and obtain some of its properties. The proposed definition measures the mean residual life function of a parallel system consisting of n identical and independent components under the condition that n - i, i = 0, 2,..., n - 1, components of the system are working and other components of the system have already failed. It is shown that, for the case where the components of the system have increasing hazard rate, the mean residual life function of the system is a nonincreasing function of time. Finally, we will obtain an upper bound for the proposed mean residual life function.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 14A Characterization of Continuous Distributions Via Regression on Pairs of Record Values(Wiley, 2005) Bairamov I.; Ahsanullah, M; Pakes, AGThe exponential type is characterized in terms of the regression of a ( possibly non-linear) function of a record value with its adjacent record values as covariates. Monotone transformations extend this result to more general settings, and these are illustrated with some specific examples.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 8On the General Class of Two-Sided Power Distribution(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2005) Ozlem, OE; Bairamov, IVan Dorp and Kotz ( 2003) introduced a general class of two-sided power distribution. We provide several examples of this distribution by considering a non negative, non decreasing differentiable function g on [0, 1] satisfying g (1) - g(0) = 1. For the considered distributions the maximum likelihood estimation and moment estimation of parameters are obtained. Moments, moment generating functions, and relative entropy are also derived.Article Citation - WoS: 1Singular Integrals of the Time-Harmonic Relativistic Dirac Equation on a Piecewise Liapunov Surface(Texas State Univ, 2005) Schneider, BaruchWe give a short proof of a formula of Poincare-Bertrand in the setting of time-harmonic solutions of the relativistic Dirac equation on a piecewise Liapunov surface, as well as for some versions of quaternionic analysis.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 17Concomitants in a Sequence of Independent Nonidentically Distributed Random Vectors(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2005) Eryılmaz, SerkanConcomitants of order statistics are considered for the situation in which the random vectors (X-1, Y-1), (X-2, Y-2), . . . , (X-n, Y-n) are independent but otherwise arbitrarily distributed. The joint and marginal distributions of the concomitants of order statistics and stochastic comparisons among the concomitants of order statistics are studied in this situation.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 12Solutions of the Gaudin Equation and Gaudin Algebras(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2005) Balantekin, AB; Dereli, T; Pehlivan, YamacThree well-known solutions of the Gaudin equation are obtained under a set of standard assumptions. By relaxing one of these assumptions, we introduce a class of mutually commuting Hamiltonians based on a different solution of the Gaudin equation. Application of the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to diagonalize these Hamiltonians reveals a new infinite-dimensional complex Lie algebra.Article Citation - WoS: 37Citation - Scopus: 42Spectral Analysis of Q-Difference Equations With Spectral Singularities(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2006) Adivar, M; Bohner, MIn this paper we investigate the eigenvalues and the spectral singularities of non-selfadjoint q-difference equations of second order with spectral singularities. Recurrence relations between moments of concomitants for the model of progressive type II censoring are given. We unify and extend some results on spacings, exceedances and concomitants for the model of progressive censoring. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Log size and rank relationship is found to display autocorrelated growth in a sample of 556 plays put on stage in the Turkish public theatre system in 12 different cities between 1998 and 2003. The lifetime of plays is also investigated and the features of plays are found not to matter for duration which can be explained by the non-profit nature of public theatre. However, the lifetimes of plays in more developed cities are longer than in less developed cities. In contrast to Broadway shows, the hazard function for Turkish public theatre plays is increasing in the number of performances.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 61Citation - Scopus: 69Adaptation To Five Metres of Sea Level Rise(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2006) Tol, Richard S. J.; Bohn, Maria; Downing, Thomas E.; Guillerminet, Marie-Laure; Hizsnyik, Eva; Kasperson, Roger; Lonsdale, KateThere is an unknown but probably small probability that the West-Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) will collapse because of anthropogenic climate change. A WAIS collapse could cause a 5-6 metre global sea level rise within centuries. In three case studies, we investigate the response of society to the most extreme yet not implausible scenario, a five-metre sea level rise within a century, starting in 2030. The case studies combine a series of interviews with experts and stakeholders with a gaming workshop. In the Rhone delta, the most likely option would be retreat, with economic losses, perhaps social losses, and maybe ecological gains. In the Thames estuary, the probable outcome is less clear, but would probably be a mix of protection, accommodation and retreat, with parts of the city centre turned into a Venice of London. A massive downstream barrier is an alternative response. In the Rhine delta (the Netherlands), the initial response would be protection, followed by retreat from the economically less important parts of the country and, probably, from Amsterdam Rotterdam metropolitan region as well. These impacts are large compared to other climate change impacts, but probably small compared to the impacts of the same scenario in other parts of the world. This suggests that the possibility of a anthropogenic-climate-change-induced WAIS collapse would strengthen the case for greenhouse gas emission reduction.Conference Object Event-Driven Probabilistic Constraint Programming(Springer Verlag, 2006) Tarim S.A.; Hnich B.; Prestwich S.D.Real-life management decisions are usually made in uncertain environments, and decision support systems that ignore this uncertainty are unlikely to provide realistic guidance. We show that previous approaches fail to provide appropriate support for reasoning about reliability under uncertainty. We propose a new framework that addresses this issue by allowing logical dependencies between constraints. Reliability is then defined in terms of key constraints called "events", which are related to other constraints via these dependencies. We illustrate our approach on two problems, contrast it with existing frameworks, and discuss future developments. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
