The Sarmanov Family and Its Generalization

A general class of bivariate distributions is introduced. This class includes the so-called San-nanov-Lee class (and consequently the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern class). It is shown that using procedures described in the paper it is possible to construct distributions of the FGM form for which the correlation coefficient between the marginals can achieve values close to +/-0.6.

Dependence Structure and Symmetry of Huang-Kotz Fgm Distributions and Their Extensions

An extension of FGM class of bivariate distributions with given marginals is presented. For Huang-Kotz FGM distributions some theorems characterizing symmetry and conditions for independence are obtained. The new family of distributions allows us to achieve correlation between the components greater than 0.5.

Special Precovers in Cotorsion Theories

A cotorsion theory is defined as a pair of classes Ext-orthogonal to each other. We give a hereditary condition (HC) which is satisfied by the (flat, cotorsion) cotorsion theory and give properties satisfied by arbitrary cotorsion theories with an HC. Given a cotorsion theory with an HC, we consider the class of all modules having a special precover with respect to the first class in the cotorsion theory and show that this class is closed under extensions. We then raise the question of whether this class is resolving or coresolving.

Changing World Trade Conditions Force the Turkish Textile and Apparel Industry To Create New Strategies

Textile and clothing industry has played an important role in the industrialisation process and market orientation of the Turkish Economy. The yarn making, cloth manufacturing, garment finishing, and related activities presently make up over 6% of the gross national product, 17.5% of industrial production, around 19% of total industrial manufactured goods, 21% of employment. The Turkish apparel industry is currently transitioning from a volume oriented, cost-based contractor role in the global apparel industry to assume more value-added activities such as design and product development. The goal of Turkish apparel manufacturers in this transition is to capitalise on their experience, skilled labour, and technological advantages to establish new markets for high quality, Turkish-designed apparel.

A New Measure of Linear Local Dependence

A new local dependence function based on regression concepts is introduced. This function can characterize the dependence structure of two random variables localized at the fixed point. Some properties of the local dependence function are given. Examples of important bivariate distributions are provided.

Bu makale, Türk radyo yayıncılığının tarihini, 1927 yılında radyonun yayına başlamasından 1964 yılında Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu'nun (TRT) kuruluşuna kadarki süre içersinde, radyonun Türkiye'nin siyasal ve sosyal yapısı üzerindeki etkilerini de göz önünde bulundurarak sunuyor. 1926'da bir özel anonim şirket olarak kurulan radyo 1936'da hükümet kararnamesiyle "devletleştirilmiştir." Yaklaşık 10 yıl gibi kısa bir süre içersinde büyük gelişmeler yaşanmış ve radyo alıcılarının sayısı 10,000'lerden 200,000'lere çıkmıştır. Bu durum hem savaş hem de 1937 tarihli Telsiz Yasası ile açıklanabilir. Radyo programlarının sayısı ve kalitesi artarken, içerikleri devletin emrinde resmi ideolojiyi yaymaya devam etmiştir. Her ne kadar radyo, kamusal bir kurum olarak tasarlanmış ve yürütülmüş olsa da, ne programların içeriği ne de seslendiği kesim toplumun genel çoğunluğuyla örtüşmüştür. Radyo, 1950'lerin ortasından 1960 Mayıs'ına kadar Demokrat Parti Hükümeti tarafından muhalefete karşı bir silah olarak kullanılmıştır. 1960 askeri darbesiyle birlikte devlet radyosunun kullanımına ilişkin yeni kanunlar ve düzenlemeler getirilmiş; 1964 yılında Türkiye Radyo Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) oluşturulmuştur.

Some Properties of the Cauchy-Type Integral for the Laplace Vector Fields Theory

We study the analog of the Cauchy-type integral for the Laplace vector fields theory in case of a piece-wise Liapunov surface of integration and we prove the Sokhotski-Plemelj theorem for it as well as the necessary and sufficient condition for the possibility to extend a given Holder function from such a surface up to a Laplace vector field. Formula for the square of the singular Cauchy-type integral is given. The proofs of all these facts are based on intimate relations between Laplace vector field and some versions of quaternionic analysis.

A Characterization of Continuous Distributions Via Regression on Pairs of Record Values

The exponential type is characterized in terms of the regression of a ( possibly non-linear) function of a record value with its adjacent record values as covariates. Monotone transformations extend this result to more general settings, and these are illustrated with some specific examples.

Exactly Solvable Pairing Model Using an Extension of the Richardson-Gaudin Approach

We introduce a new class of exactly solvable boson pairing models using the technique of Richardson and Gaudin. Analytical expressions for all energy eigenvalues and the first few energy eigenstates are given. In addition, another solution to Gaudin's equation is also mentioned. A relation with the Calogero-Sutherland model is suggested.

A Note on the Mean Residual Life Function of a Parallel System

One of the most important types of system structures is the parallel structure. In the present article, we propose a definition for the mean residual life function of a parallel system and obtain some of its properties. The proposed definition measures the mean residual life function of a parallel system consisting of n identical and independent components under the condition that n - i, i = 0, 2,..., n - 1, components of the system are working and other components of the system have already failed. It is shown that, for the case where the components of the system have increasing hazard rate, the mean residual life function of the system is a nonincreasing function of time. Finally, we will obtain an upper bound for the proposed mean residual life function.

On the General Class of Two-Sided Power Distribution

Van Dorp and Kotz ( 2003) introduced a general class of two-sided power distribution. We provide several examples of this distribution by considering a non negative, non decreasing differentiable function g on [0, 1] satisfying g (1) - g(0) = 1. For the considered distributions the maximum likelihood estimation and moment estimation of parameters are obtained. Moments, moment generating functions, and relative entropy are also derived.

Concomitants in a Sequence of Independent Nonidentically Distributed Random Vectors

Concomitants of order statistics are considered for the situation in which the random vectors (X-1, Y-1), (X-2, Y-2), . . . , (X-n, Y-n) are independent but otherwise arbitrarily distributed. The joint and marginal distributions of the concomitants of order statistics and stochastic comparisons among the concomitants of order statistics are studied in this situation.

Solutions of the Gaudin Equation and Gaudin Algebras

Three well-known solutions of the Gaudin equation are obtained under a set of standard assumptions. By relaxing one of these assumptions, we introduce a class of mutually commuting Hamiltonians based on a different solution of the Gaudin equation. Application of the algebraic Bethe ansatz technique to diagonalize these Hamiltonians reveals a new infinite-dimensional complex Lie algebra.

The Longest Run Statistic Associated With Exchangeable Binary Variables

Since the hydrologic risk is defined as a risk of exceedance of a critical level during a period, the number of the longest successive exceedances which is referred to as the longest run statistic shows the length of the longest hydrologic risk period. This paper is concerned with the longest run statistic associated with exceedances. In the derivation of a binary sequence, an independent sequence of random variables and a random threshold are considered. The elements of a binary sequence are assigned with respect to a random threshold. In such a consideration, the elements of the corresponding binary sequence are not independent, but are symmetrically dependent, i.e. exchangeable. The distribution of the longest run statistic is derived for the sequence of exchangeable binary variables and its hydrological use is discussed. © Tübi?tak.

Changing Patterns in Turkey-Eu Relations: From Eligibility To Candidacy and Beyond

This paper analyzes the changing patterns in the evolution of Turkey-EU relations. Turkey's long march to Europe has demonstrated three different patterns. 'Enduring association without accession', 'the reinforcing dynamics towards full-membership' and 'enduring association with an indefinite accession'. The first pattern includes the period from the establishment of association relations to the Helsinki Summit. Turkey was confirmed to be eligible for membership in this period. The second pattern starts with the period in Helsinki Summit, in which Turkey gained a candidacy status. The third pattern, enduring association with an indefinite accession, seems to describe the situation started with the accession negotiations. The third pattern determines the road-map for Turkey on the way to the EU. This paper argues that the third pattern can lead Turkey-EU relations to a great ambiguity. After evaluating historically the validity of these patterns in Turkey-EU relations and their link with the internal dynamics of the European integration process, the manuscript investigates the implications and impacts of these patterns for future Turkey-EU relations. This paper gives a special attention to the discussion of a 'privileged partnership' between Turkey and the EU.
