Conference Object 3d Printing With Bacterial Cellulose-Based Bioactive Composites for Design Applications(Ecaade-education & research computer aided architectural design europe, 2022) Turhan, Gözde Damla; Afşar, Seçil; Özel, Berfin; Doyuran, Aslıhan; Varinlioglu, Güzden; Bengisu, MuratThe bacterial cellulose (BC) biofilms are explored in design applications as replacements to petroleum-based materials in order to overcome the irreversible effects of the Anthropocene. Unlike biomaterials, designers as mediators could collaborate with bioactive polymers as a form of wetware to manufacture living design products with the aid of novel developments in biology and engineering. Past and ongoing experiments in the literature show that BC has a strong nanofibril structure that provides adhesion for attachment to plant cellulose-based networks and it could grow on the surfaces of the desired geometry thanks to its inherited, yet, controllable bio-intelligence. This research explores BC-based bioactive composites as wetware within the context of digital fabrication in which the methodology involves distinct, yet integrated, three main stages: Digital design and G-code generation (software stage); BC cultivation and printable bioactive composite formulation (wetware stage); digital fabrication with a customized 3D printer (hardware stage). The results have shown that the interaction of BC and plant-based cellulose fibers of jute yarns has enhanced the structural load-bearing capacity of the form against compressive forces, while pure BC is known only by its tensile strength. Since the outcomes were fabricated with the use of a bioactive material, the degradation process also adds a fourth dimension: Time, by which the research findings could further establish a bio-upcycling process of wastes towards biosynthesis of valuable products. Moreover, developing a BC-based bioactive filament indicates potentially a feasible next step in the evolution of multiscale perspectives on the growth of habitable living structures that could reinforce the interaction between nature and architecture through collaboration with software, hardware, and wetware in innovative and sustainable ways.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Agar-Based Adaptable Diy Materials(Univ Belgrade, Fac Mechanical Engineering, 2019) Zuberi, Hajra S.; Bengisu, MuratSeveral types of agar-based polymeric materials were developed for the use of designers, engineers, makers, and do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts. Simple recipes and procedures were determined for the adaptation and use by anyone who is interested to use sustainable, non-toxic, and even edible plastic-like materials without the need for a scientific background. The recipes and procedures were developed by controlled laboratory experiments. The main recipes contain different combinations of agar strips, water, glycerine, and vinegar. A variety of films with different sensorial properties (soft, hard, flexible, stiff clear, coloured, textured, with or without spicy odour, etc.) were prepared by heating the ingredients in a saucepan, mixing, pouring on a flat surface, and drying for a few days. These were evaluated by tinkering and user studies that involved students from design, food engineering, culinary arts, and other fields. While previous literature has addressed the technical characteristics and commercial benefits of these systems, more research is needed on what makes a successful IoT system design process that can be used as a guideline by designers within the context of manufacturing. This paper aims to address this gap using a comparative case study of two leading manufacturers from the aerospace and trucking industries. Based on empirical data, the commonalities and differences between the two companies are articulated. Further analysis of the cases revealed six antecedents for successful IoT service and system design: Communicating a well-articulated system design strategy, redefining frontline employee roles and responsibilities, training and recruiting service aware staff, providing guidance to customers on system use, aligning customer focus across the business, and utilizing methods/techniques for systems thinking and creativity. These antecedents are discussed in detail with evidence from two IoT system design projects. The perceived utility of selected products and reasons for nonuse were investigated. Descriptions of products that would be useful for the participants but may not be available on the market were also obtained. The three most used assistive products were found to be computer screen readers (46%), talking watches (26%), and screen readers for cellular phones (21%). Cellular phones with screen reading capability are the most desired assistive products among the visually impaired community, but their high cost is a major barrier. Most of the relevant technologies are available but some product development, such as adaptation to the Turkish language, is necessary. His recent exhibition, entitled as Geomart-ut7, in the Beyoglu Culture Route programme, located at Ataturk Cultural Centre in Istanbul, creates a multi-layered venue for contemplation. The geometric patterns which move, float, diverge and converge by the means of computer coding on tall digital screens, and most of these take their inspiration from the marvels of geometrical artworks that are observed throughout history. However when we carefully observe these animated geometrical patterns, we see that the artist's works are not merely the replicas of traditional patterns; through animation, the geometrical patterns, which are animated by coding techniques, change their angles and directions, yielding intermediary figures. The current creation process, which was defined by the artist himself as Dialectical Creativity, emerges because of mutual interactions between the artist and the computer, which he uses to communicate through the code language. The fundamentals of this artistic production cover the themes of repetition, meditative effect and infinity; thus, it is very appropriate to consider Artut's artworks in the contemporary age. Here we see the attempt of the artist to derive ideas from his deeply-rooted heritage, and make the meaningful connections with the past, even while emerging onto the contemporary art scene.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Bio-Based Material Integration Into Computational Form-Finding Tools by Introducing Tensile Properties in the Case of Bacterial Cellulose-Based Composites(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Turhan, Gozde Damla; Varinlioglu, Guzden; Bengisu, MuratRecent studies in digital design and fabrication processes focus on the potentials of using biological systems in nature as mathematical models or more recently as bio-based materials and composites in various applications. The reciprocal integration between mechanical and digital media for designing and manufacturing bio-based products is still open to development. The current digital form-finding scripts involve an extensive material list, although bio-based materials have not been fully integrated yet. This paper explores a customized form-finding process by suggesting a framework through mechanically informed material-based computation. Bacterial cellulose, an unconventional yet potential material for design, was explored across its biological growth, tensile properties, and the integration of datasets into digital form finding. The initial results of the comparison between digital form finding with conventional materials versus mechanically informed digital form finding revealed a huge difference in terms of both the resulting optimum geometry and the maximum axial forces that the geometry could actually handle. Although this integration is relatively novel in the literature, the proposed methodology has proven effective for enhancing the structural optimization process within digital design and fabrication and for bringing us closer to real-life applications. This approach allows conventional and limited material lists in various digital form finding and structural optimization scripts to cover novel materials once the quantitative mechanical properties are obtained. This method has the potential to develop into a commercial algorithm for a large number of bio-based and customized prototypes within the context of digital form finding of complex geometries.Conference Object Biodegradation in Design Process: Digital Building Catalog for Bio-Inspired Design Proposals(Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe, 2025) Ercan, İ.; Uslu, F.Ö.; Kayabaş, M.A.Through the incorporation of fungal biodegradation processes into architectural design, a novel approach to sustainability is possible, which goes beyond the selection of materials and growth processes and enables insights from natural decomposition. While biodegradable materials are increasingly studied, the potential of biodegradation itself to shape design remains largely unexplored. Although the biodegradation process is seen as the final stage of design, the existing knowledge of structural deformation in nature could be an inspiration for the design process in the early stages. This study analyzes the structural transformations of five fungal species during biodegradation in mesh-like frameworks as a basis for future research. This research involves a literature review, experimental analysis, and digital catalog development, resulting in MyCo-Design, a platform that documents species-specific biodegradation data. Structural changes such as shrinkage, curvature, stiffness reduction, and volume decrease were captured through photography and 3D scanning techniques, providing a resource for bio-inspired designs. MyCo-Design platform provides designers with information by species, structural forms, and degradation parameters to use as inspiration in the early stages of their design process. This platform features an AI-powered interface component that enables users to generate visuals based on design prompts inspired by experimental observation data. During the testing process, the platform showed potential in inspiring structural solutions based on biodegradation observation. The findings of the study highlight the potential to generate circular inspiration in the early stages of design through a tool created at the intersection of nature, humans, and artificial intelligence. © 2025, Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe. This effort led to a better understanding of the structure and unique properties of borate glasses. Although silicate and borosilicate glasses satisfy the vast majority of scientific and industrial needs, there are certain circumstances where they are not satisfactory. Furthermore, borate glasses offer certain advantages over silicate glasses which are not well known, neither well explored. However, certain characteristics of borate glasses such as their affinity to water requires that they are well selected, designed, or developed to satisfy the specifications of a given application. This review aims to explore and report some of the key properties of binary borate glasses. Properties including chemical durability, glass transformation temperature, and melting temperature were analyzed. The chemical durability of PbO-B2O3 glasses with PbO contents ranging from 30 to 80 mol% was determined. An average dissolution rate of 0.2 g m(-2) day(-1) was obtained for the composition 80PbO center dot 20B(2) O-3. These glasses were studied under simulation conditions and showed good potential as a vitrification matrix for radioactive waste management. Clear vitrified waste products containing up to 30 mol% SrO and 25 mol% Cs2O could be obtained. Leaching rates are about hundred times higher in low PbO glasses compared to high PbO glasses. These results are encouraging since they open up new horizons in the development of low melting temperature lead borate glass for waste immobilization applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Despite the growing literature on co-design in various disciplines, there is a need for a comprehensive approach to co-design that explores different meanings and manifestations of communities that are under the influence of continuous change and transformation in urban areas. Our aim is to investigate (1) how the co-design process could be enhanced to foster community empowerment and (2) which design methods and tools could be explored to align with the paradigm shift towards a new model of co-design that aims to include biodesign, which sees nature as a co-creator and co-designer. This study proposes a new framework of community empowerment for a [re]-defined co-design management framework as an outcome of the collaboration between the local government and planning agencies and the Design School of Izmir University of Economics, Turkey. Methodological framework - derived from the Double Diamond diagram developed by the Design Council, illustrates a co-design system to integrate various actors; stakeholders (designers, local authorities, academics), community representatives (users, NGOs and civil initiatives, independent designers and artists). The findings address the opportunities to grasp the potential of co-design and generate new collaborations among actors including living organisms. This enables us to reconsider how co-design, as a knowledge management tool, can be utilized for empowering communities in urban areas, and to examine how it can be reframed for more livable urban environments. Through the construction of our framework, one of the crucial outcomes addresses the co-evolution that challenges the human-centered design paradigm and evolves it towards co-designing with living systems. Thus, the final framework becomes multi-scalar and multi-directional, and requires constant vertical and horizontal movement between, and within, various micro-, meso-, and macro-levels of knowledge interactions.Article A Computational Interface Design To Reenact the Transitory Moments of the Izmir International Fair(Universidad de Oviedo, 2023) Savasta, Daniele; Kocabıyık Savasta, Elif; Gönlügür, Emre; Savasta, Elif Kocabiyik; Gönlögör, EmreGrouper is a computational interface design that supports researchers working with (visual) digital collections. The significance of Grouper is related to the positioning of researchers and the possibility it offers them to create, manage and visualise a collection within their research process. In this study, Grouper focuses on the ephemera collections of the Izmir International Fair (IIF) and asks: 'How can digital tools help to trace, piece together and make sense of the design heritage of IIF, which includes a wide range of design practices and objects spread across nine decades'. Working with IIF's ephemera provides Grouper with a new lens that emphasizes the concepts of 'assemblage' and 'collaboration', allowing for the creation of previously unavailable content and narratives. The notions of transience and permanence are manifested in the assemblage of ephemera, the digitisation of collections, Grouper's flexible research process, and the persistence of transient objects and memories in new narratives. © 2023 Res Mobilis. We engaged in a Research through Design process to improve the ideation of AI products and services. We developed a design resource capturing AI capabilities based on 40 AI features commonly used across various domains. To probe its usefulness, we created a set of slides illustrating AI capabilities and asked designers to ideate AI-enabled user experiences. We also incorporated capabilities into our own design process to brainstorm concepts with domain experts and data scientists. Our research revealed that designers should focus on innovations where moderate AI performance creates value. These phenomena are nonlinear, ambiguous, multi-layered, and exhibit recursive adaptation. I begin by describing why and how theory development for emerging phenomena might differ from traditional approaches. I then propose an initial framework for emergence in design research focusing on four issues: positioning, structure, communication, and evaluation, and alternating between discovery and creation views. First, the framework lays the groundwork for theorising about emerging phenomena, primarily highlighting the use and integration of new technologies that alter existing paradigms. Second, it emphasises the different characteristics of building theories for emerging phenomena, presenting it as a novel pathway compared to the 'safe' territory of traditional design research approaches. A design research use case that integrates Explainable AI (XAI) into healthcare decision-making exemplifies these characteristics. Third, to evaluate such theorising, I introduce the notion of 'adaptive rigour,' which ensures that the evaluation process remains robust and credible while being flexible enough to accommodate the evolving nature of emerging phenomena.
