Conference Object Children's Stereotypical Gendered Behaviours in Outdoor Educational Play Environments(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2020) Isci, Beril; Hasirci, DenizThe aim of this study is to understand how gender-typed and gender-neutral play environments affect children's behaviour. Thus, individual and group play attitudes are investigated in relation to playground design. Preschool children spend their most of the time with free time activities. The learning process gains importance in those activities according to their preferences in choosing play, peer and environment. In early childhood ages, they learn their stereotypical gender behaviour in related to their cultural and parental background, which affects their attitudes in their social interaction. Between 5 and 8 years, children learn their gender identity, developing confidence and ability according to gender. Within this context, the study aims to analyse if the design of outdoor playground environments can reduce gender discrimination by learning children's preferences in gender-neutral and gender-typed environments according to playground equipment. In order to start thinking about reducing gender segregation in early childhood ages, this study aims to understand how playground design affects types of games. Learning children's preferences and attitudes with behavioural mapping and observational checklist for determined individual and group play behaviours may help to for designing gender-neutral playgrounds. Research results may have implications for the design of gender-neutral playgrounds that provide various opportunities for group play for the early childhood period and help reduce gender discrimination by creating awareness on stereotypical gender norms.Conference Object A Multidisciplinary Teaching Approach: Structuring A Landscape Design Course for Interior Architecture and Architecture Students(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2020) Kaştaş Uzun, İpekDesign related fields such as architecture, landscape architecture or interior architecture are quite intricate and it is hard to define strict boundaries in between these disciplines. Based on this idea, the curriculum of five design disciplines Architecture (Arch), Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (IAED), Industrial Design (ID), Visual Communication and Design (VCD), Fashion and Textile Design (FA) are designed in Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. Students of each department start their education all together and they take core design courses such as Art and Design Studio, Drawing and Representation, and History of Art and Design together in the first year. As the departments continue their curriculums separately after the first year, this multidisciplinary approach continues during the rest of the education with courses such as Furniture Design for students of IAED and ID students, of Textile Design for IAED and FA students or Drawing and Visualization courses for ARCH, IAED and ID students. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of multidisciplinary education in design related fields with the example of the course named An Introduction to Contemporary Architectural Landscaping. Being a landscape architect and urban designer teaching in the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design and being a part of such a diverse and multidisciplinary structure, helped to develop this course on the basic knowledge and theories of landscape design for IAED and ARCH students. The educational structure of this course is also multidisciplinary and divided into three main parts. First part is based on the technical aspects of the landscape architecture discipline and aims to teach students concepts such as hard and soft landscape materials, main stages of a landscape design project and presentation techniques. The second part of the course is based on the cultural, physiological and psychological effects of the discipline and focuses on topics ranging from the history of landscape design to the sensual and psychological effects of landscape elements, from the role of indigenous planting for sustainability to ecological restoration. Finally, the last part of the course expects students to use the technical information acquired from the first and second part of this course and combine it with their prior design education in their core design disciplines to develop a landscape architecture project on selected project sites from students' near environments. Through the multidisciplinary structure of the course, the paper highlights three important discussions. Firstly, inclusion of students from different disciplines in the same course increases the success rate of students with the help of cross-learning experiences. Secondly, during design education, having the chance of participation to courses from different disciplines help to broaden students' perspectives on problem solving during design phase. Finally, a course that incorporates technical knowledge on a design field with actual projects in environments that students experience in their everyday life increase their success rates.Conference Object Research-Based Approaches in Interior Architecture Education(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education & Development, 2020) Hasirci, DenizThis paper discusses the combination of technological developments and research-based approaches in an interior architecture education. The paper focuses on the Environment-Behavior Studies (EBS) course in the department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Izmir University of Economics, Turkey. The undergraduate course aims to create awareness in students about the relationship between human beings and their physical and social environments. Students learn to understand human behavior based on EBS theory and practice examples, and to question the design decisions in their environment, as well as their own. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to design and complete an EBS research study and to apply their technological knowledge to suggest improvements to the research area. This paper displays three group projects that focus on environment-behavior issues, namely, an assessment of the coastline through the use of biophilic design principles; evaluation of a kindergarten learning environment through the use of the cognitive maps drawn by children, and the assessment of privacy and territoriality issues in a dormitory for university students. Although there is variation in terms of subject matter and scale, the students' approach to each project showed developed knowledge in interior architecture, the environment-behavior field, and design skills. The group projects were assessed through students' reports, presentations at the university, and project posters over 100 points according to the success in forming the research structure, use of EBS background, creation of design guidelines driven by EBS research, and application to design through the use of appropriate software. Moreover, the progress of students taking this course were further followed in their upper years through interviews on their design studio and thesis courses. Findings of the research study indicated that students' sensitivity and design decisions were highly and positively influenced by the EBS background they received and that they could transfer this knowledge to their designs through technology with considerable ease. The goal is to help students to become better interior architects, more in touch with human behavior, and among others, the physical, social, and ecological needs of the environment. The creation and representation of design ideas through developing technology is also of critical importance for the education of interior architects who are in touch with advancements of today, designing for the future.
