This cross-sectional study compared performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients in relation to cultural, demographic, and immigration-related factors (acculturation, bilingualism). Method: The study comprised Turkish immigrant (n = 21) and monolingual, nonimmigrant German (n = 20) and Turkish (n = 24) patients with AD. All participants were administered cognitive screening tools, measures of depression, and dementia severity. Results: The mean MMSE total score was significantly higher in German patients with AD compared to both patient groups, but did not differ between native-born Turkish and Turkish immigrant groups. After adjustment for years of education, differences in MMSE performance were no longer significant between groups. Furthermore, bilingualism was associated with better performance on the MMSE in Turkish-immigrant patients. The mean RUDAS total scores were similar between groups with and without adjustment for educational level. Performance on the RUDAS was not associated with demographic and immigration-related variables. Conclusions: The findings highlight the need to consider the educational background, linguistic integration of older non-Western immigrants for the objective characterization of cognitive profiles. The results provide support for the use of the RUDAS, particularly, among older Turkish immigrants with lower educational levels and varying degrees of acculturation, bilingualism.Article Citation - WoS: 50Citation - Scopus: 52It Takes a Village To Support the Vocabulary Development of Children With Multiple Risk Factors(Amer Psychological Assoc, 2014) Baydar, Nazli; Kuntay, Aylin C.; Yagmurlu, Bilge; Aydemir, Nuran; Cankaya, Dilek; Goksen, Fatos; Cemalcilar, ZeynepData from a nationally representative sample from Turkey (N = 1,017) were used to investigate the environmental factors that support the receptive vocabulary of 3-year-old children who differ in their developmental risk due to family low economic status and elevated maternal depressive symptoms. Children's vocabulary knowledge was strongly associated with language stimulation and learning materials in all families regardless of risk status. Maternal warmth and responsiveness supported vocabulary competence in families of low economic status only when maternal depressive symptoms were low. In families with the highest levels of risk, that is, with depression and economic distress jointly present, support by the extended family and neighbors for caring for the child protected children's vocabulary development against these adverse conditions. The empirical evidence on the positive contribution of extrafamilial support to young children's receptive vocabulary under adverse conditions allows an expansion of our current theorizing about influences on language development.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Visual Asymmetries in Japanese Quail (coturnix Japonica) Retain a Lifelong Potential for Plasticity(Amer Psychological Assoc, 2009) Gulbetekin, Evrim; Gunturkun, Onur; Dural, Seda; Çeti̇nkaya, HakanAdult Japanese quail display left-eye/right-hemisphere dominance in visually guided sexual tracking. In 2 experiments, the authors set out to answer if this functional cerebral asymmetry is modifiable by posthatch monocular deprivation, In Experiment 1, the left or the right eye of 2-day old quail were closed for 70 days. Quail were run in a left- or a right-turning runway to obtain access to a conspecific of the opposite sex. The performance of both left and right eye systems was equal. In Experiment 2, the deprived eyes of the quail were opened and the previously open eyes were closed. They were tested with the same runways. Overall, running speed was very low, but the quail showed a left-eye/right-hemisphere superiority. Altogether, these experiments evince 3 insights into cerebral asymmetries in quail. First, posthatch asymmetries of visual input can alter lateralized behavior to an important extent. Second, cerebral asymmetries could involve an interhemispheric inhibition that can be modified by epigenetic factors. Third, even long-term visual deprivation does not abolish a previously established cerebral asymmetry.
