Article Citation - WoS: 5Conspicuous Consumption of the Neglected Majority: Low-Income Consumers in a Non-Western Culture(Academic Journals, 2011) Ati̇k, Deniz; Sahin, Dicle YurdakulWhile conspicuous consumption has been a topic of interest in academia for many decades, little attention has been paid to the consumption behavior of low income consumers. In rarity of such studies, this study aims to contribute to the literature by investigating the symbolic and conspicuous consumption of this neglected majority, if/how they spend their limited resources on conspicuous consumption and the underlying dynamics behind. A qualitative approach was adopted with in-depth interviews, allowing participants to express their thoughts and feelings freely. The preliminary findings indicated a tendency of low-income consumers to engage in conspicuous consumption, as previously stated in literature. However, we also observed that in some occasions, this tendency was due to the social pressure to conform rather than an intentional action for showing-off. Further dynamics are also discussed about consumers' critics towards conspicuous consumption.Article Citation - WoS: 100Corporate Social Responsibility in Times of Financial Crisis(Academic Journals, 2010) Karaibrahimoglu, Yasemin ZenginThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of financial crisis on the number and extent of CSR projects. It is presumed that, during a financial crisis, as organizations act more conservatively and defensively (Cheney et al., 1990), they fail to balance the expectations of related parties. Therefore, organizations might choose not to engage in CSR projects. To study this, globally operating companies listed in Fortune 500 were examined by using paired sample t tests on 100 randomly-sampled global companies from the list of Fortune 500. Overall, it was found that there is significant drop in numbers and extent of CSR projects in times of financial crisis. The study contributes to the literature by initiating discussions on CSR and the ways they are affected by financial crisis.Article An Empirical Study of the Relationship Between Normlessness, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility(Academic Journals, 2010) Uçel, Ela Burcu; Gunerergin, Mert; Cerit, A. Managers and other decision-makers base their decision mainly on information that accountants provide. Since accuracy of decisions depends on the reliability of accounting information, the ethical dimension of the profession has gained considerable attention recently. With this understanding, this study examined whether ethics is teachable or not based on a survey conducted among business students in two Turkish universities. Overall, research findings suggest a strong support for the inclusion of ethics in business and accounting curriculum.Article Citation - WoS: 3The Firm-Level Determinants Underlying the Profitability in Brokerage Institutions: Some Evidence From Turkey(Academic Journals, 2010) Kaymaz, Oender; Kaymaz, OezguerSampling the period of 2005- 2007 on a quarter basis, this paper made a comprehensive empirical investigation on identifying the firm-level determinants underlying the profitability in brokerage institutions operating in Turkey. We performed multiple regression and panel data analyses for a large array of brokerage institutions and observations. Two sets of dependent variables were built to control for profitability. The first regressed variable was the operating profitability of total assets and the second one was the pre-tax profitability of total assets. We found that, the balance sheet-based factors such as current trade receivables to total assets, financial assets to total assets and short-term liabilities to total assets significantly, robustly and commonly account for the brokerage houses' profitability. We also found that, the firm-level factors do better explain the changes in the profitability should the former ratio be proxied as a profitability indicator. Paper concludes with some concrete policy recommendations.Article Citation - WoS: 78Health Care Service Quality: a Comparison of Public and Private Hospitals(Academic Journals, 2010) Yesilada, Figen; Direktor, EbruThe aim of this paper is threefold: to test the dimensionality of the SERVQUAL instrument in the Northern Cyprus health care industry, to assess the service quality provided in public and private hospitals in Northern Cyprus and to identify the service quality dimensions that play important role on patient satisfaction. Data were collected in two phases from the same sample, which consisted of 806 systematically selected people above the age of eighteen. Factor analysis revealed a three factor solution, namely; reliability-confidence, empathy and tangibles. This result does not support the five factor model of the original SERVQUAL. Gap analysis showed that private hospitals have smaller gaps than public hospitals in all three service quality dimensions. Finally, logistic regression findings indicated that while all three dimensions are somewhat influential on patient satisfaction, in public hospitals tangibles dimension seems to exert no significant influence on satisfaction. Findings are important both for public and private hospital managers and for policy makers.Article Citation - WoS: 2Impacts of Wrong Financial Decisions on Collapse of an Empire: the Ottoman Case(Academic Journals, 2009) Saygılı, Arıkan TarıkCertain attitudes and moves, otherwise and other times considered to be insignificant, turned out to be significantly determinant in various events throughout the world history. Those architects who do function in the housing industry try to satisfy state authorities, private enterprises and the customer, behaving according to these clients' intentions. This, in turn, succeeds because of the current era of flexible accumulation where a consumer society is ready to digest whatever is offered. That is, buildings that have some resemblance to historical examples or look different to what people would normally prefer are chosen by consumers. As a result, different social classes of society commodify historical, traditional and cultural values in the name of creating an identity. In this context, this essay focuses on the image of the house itself and its interpretations within the post-1980s Turkish residential housing industry. It shows that architectural styles, typologies, names and terminology are freely used according to the market desires throughout the two case studies. The housing development called Kemer Country is a clear example of the reconstruction of a traditional Turkish neighborhood (mahalle) but there is no substance behind their facades, it is only an illusion. While Kemer Country creates a fake traditional mahalle outside of the city center of Istanbul, the developers of the Bosphorus City housing development claim to have re-built a significant part of Istanbul's topography, as well as its unique architecture, outside of the city. This paper reveals that the architecture of the residential developments in post-1980s Turkey is lead by market forces and consumption-oriented construction rather than artistic, cultural or historical assets.Article Citation - WoS: 12Role of Cultural Sensitivity on Creativity of Academic Expatriates: the Moderating Effect of Culture(Academic Journals, 2010) Katrinli, Alev; Penbek, SebnemCall it international assignment; expatriation or working in foreign country, new century is the herald of international movement of work force.
