Identifying Collocations in Turkish Using Statistical Methods

Collocation is the combination of words in which words appear together more often than by chance in order to create a block of meaning. Since the extraction of collocations provides many benefits in automatic processing, translation of Turkish texts and in learning Turkish, it is an important issue in Turkish natural language processing. In this study several statistical techniques, including occurrence frequency, pointwise mutual information and hypothesis tests, are applied on Turkey Turkish corpus to automatically identify collocations. We have utilized both stemmed and surface forms of words in order to explore the effect of stemming in collocation extraction. The techniques are evaluated using the F-measure. The chi-square hypothesis test and pointwise mutual information methods have produced better results compared to other methods. In addition, we have observed that when words are stemmed, methods which may be considered as successful in collocation extraction may be more clearly discriminated. © 2016, Ahmet Yesevi University. Inquiry From the Aegean Region: Changing Ruling Class in Business Circles

This paper aims to examine the Turkish ruling class in business circles and to detect possible changes that might have occurred in the past ten to fifteen years. In the 2002 general elections, the ruling political party changed, and an Islamicoriented party, AKP (Justice and Development Party), secured office. The following years presented observable changes in the Turkish political life, which may have caused related changes in the ruling class profile of the business circles in the country. In the aftermath of these changes, the current study attempts to portray the present ruling class of business in Turkey from an Aegean perspective. A series of in-depth interviews were conducted with carefully selected actors of the business, political and academic circles from the Aegean Region. The findings exhibited a change in the ruling class profile in business circles and presented a description of this class. © 2014, Ahmet Yesevi University. All rights reserved.
On Non-Academic Conceptions of "correct" Turkish in Media: Descriptive and Prescriptive Approaches and Beyond

As a popular subject, the use of Turkish in media has become the subject of numerous critical articles and books. Most of these studies are written by people with various professional backgrounds such as journalism, teaching, announcing, etc. and due to the lack of a linguistic perspective and methodological and theoretical basis, they may include some misconceptions. These publications, also being recommended for elementary and high school students, include highly subjective and disputable judgements, and sometimes they may lead the way for other unfruitful disputes which eventually end up in a vicious cycle. In this study, a database composed of twelve books about the improper use of Turkish published within the last decade is studied in an attempt to reveal methodological and theoretical misconceptions. My aim is to approach this type of literature critically, which may eventually contribute to the linguistic consciousness and language planning processes and also suggest new fields of inquiry for the sociolinguists.
