Article Long-Stem Prosthesis for Intertrochanteric and Femoral Neck Fractures in the Elderly: Retrospective Comparison of Short-Term Clinical Outcomes(Galenos, 2021-04-09) Çekok, Kübra; Biçen, Çağdaş; Akdemir, Mehmet; Türken, Mehmet Aykut; Çekok, Fatma Kubra; Bıcen, Ahmet CagdasObjective: Hip fracture treatment in elderly patients remains challenging. This study aimed to evaluate short-term clinical results of long-stem cementless arthroplasty in elderly patients with femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures. Materials and Methods: We collected data of patients we treated with long-stem cementless arthroplasty between January 2011 and December 2019 due to hip fractures. This study included 48 patients (>= 65 years of age) with femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures. The patients underwent either bipolar or total hip arthroplasty. A 2-year follow-up was conducted in all the patients. Outcomes were evaluated with the Harris hip score (HHS), Koval categories, complications and hip and mid-thigh pain. We compared clinical results of patients with femoral neck fractures and those with intertrochanteric fractures. Results: The mean follow-up period was 57 (34-92) months. Sixteen patients had femoral neck fractures and 32 had intertrochanteric fractures. No difference in demographic characteristics and comorbidities was noted between groups. The mean preoperative Barthel index of activities of daily living score was 79. At the last follow-up, the mean HHS of the control group was 77 and the mean Koval categories score was 3. Revision surgeries were conducted in two patients due to dislocation. Infection was observed in one patient and was treated by debridement and anti-biotherapy. Implant loosening and periprosthetic fractures were not noted. Conclusion: With fair outcomes, long-stem cementless arthroplasty is a potential treatment for hip fractures in elderly patients. A longer follow-up to evaluate the efficacy of these prostheses is warranted. Article Ageless Wisdom: a Cross-Cultural Study on Enhancing Life Satisfaction Through Skills Promotion Among Older Adults(Ani Publishing, 2024-04-30) Adele Gaia De Stefani; Burçin Önder; Kaygın, Hüseyin; Ulus, İhsan Çağatay; Ratkowska-Pasikowska, Justyna; Ertürk, Nesrin Oruç; Onder, Burcin; Stefani, Adele Gaia De; Bulun, Sebnem NigarThis article explores the pervasive issue of ageism and its detrimental effects on the elderly population. Ageism or the prejudice and discrimination against older adults based on their age, can have significant impact on their well-being and life satisfaction. However, the article also delves into the potential positive effects of continuous learning on reducing ageism and enhancing the life satisfaction of the elderly. As a proactive approach, lifelong learning presents an opportunity for the elderly to challenge stereotypes, remain engaged in society, and foster personal growth. This study highlights how training and educational programs can empower older adults, instilling a sense of purpose and accomplishment, leading to a more fulfilled and satisfying life in their later years. The main purpose was to investigate how continuous learning affects the lives and life satisfaction perception of elderly people over the age of 65 from Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Turkey after one week and 25 hours of technology, art and psychotherapy trainings that are believed to support them in every aspect of life.Article Citation - WoS: 3Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Version of the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2021-06-30) Ozgul, Ecem; Akpinar Soylemez, Burcu; Söylemez, Burcu AkpınarIntroduction: The self-efficacy of caregivers is an important matter that merits investigation, and this requires that the concept of self-efficacy be measured with a valid, reliable instrument. Materials and Methods: This research examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.82 for the total scale, 0.76 for the self-efficacy in obtaining respite subscale, 0.82 for the self-efficacy in responding to disruptive patient behaviours subscale and 0.96 for the self-efficacy in controlling upsetting thoughts about caregiving subscale. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy is a valid, reliable measurement tool and suitable to the Turkish culture.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Protecting Older Workers' Health in Legal Terms Comparatively European Eacquis in the Light of Ilo R162(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2020-09-30) Sisli, ZeynepIntroduction: This article discusses the specific laws, regulations, and recommendations aimed at protecting older workers against occupational accidents and illnesses and whether they are properly regulated by Turkish legislation compared with the European Union acquis, in order to protect older workers against discrimination, and to make their working conditions more appropriate for their ages, in the light of International Labour Organization Recommendation No. 162. Materials and methods: This conceptual article was prepared by evaluating the legal framework for protection of the occupational health and safety of older Turkish workers, through a comparison of Turkish law, International Labour Organization Recommendation No. 162, and the European Union acquis, and consideration of the facts reported in the relevant literature, using the document analysis method. Results and Conclusion: Neither Turkish labour law nor European Union acquis include sufficient regulation to protect the health and safety of older workers at work. Older workers' health should be protected specifically by social law, without driving them to poverty. Changes in the regulation of working conditions that would be supported by the social security system have been proposed to protect the health of older workers as a specially protected group.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Prevalence of Physical Restraint: a Cross-Sectional Observational Study(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2020-09-30) Soylemez, Burcu Akpinar; Kucukguclu, Oziem; Ozkaya, Bilgehan; Ozgul, Ecem; Akpinar Söylemez, BurcuIntroduction: Physical restraint (PR) is commonly used in healthcare institutions worldwide and controversial strategies in the medical field. The purpose of this study was to determine the PR prevalence in adult patients at a university hospital in Turkey. Materials and Methods: An observational and cross-sectional design was carried out. Prevalence rates were computed. A total of 6698 patients in 30 units were evaluated at 10 unit visits between July-September 2018. Patient and PR information form was used. Two researchers visited the units and proceeded with data collection. The study population consisted of all patients who were present in the hospital on the day of data collection. Results: Among 6698 patients, 287 (4.3%) patients were restrained. The highest overall prevalence of 69.6% was in the surgical intensive care unit (ICU). The main reasons reported for using restraints were the prevention of pulling out medical devices (47 %). Age (p = 0.000) and units (e.g., surgical units, ICUs) (p = 0.000) were statistically significant predictors of PR. Age (p = .000) and units (p =.000) were statistically significant predictors of PR. The results show that for every additional 0.038 year in patients age, the patient becomes 1.038 times more likely to be restrained. Conclusion: In Turkey, the rate of application of PR is similar to that of world figures. Age is a very important variable in the use of PR. As they get older, their risk of being exposed to PR increases.Article Citation - WoS: 2Validation of the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity Questionnaire in Older Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(Dokuz Eylul Univ Inst Health Sciences, 2021-09-20) Aktan, Ridvan; Ozalevli, Sevgi; Yalcinkaya, Gamze; Alpaydin, Aylin Ozgen; Sevinc, CanPurpose: There are not many questionnaires that have proven validity and reliability in evaluating the level of physical activity in older patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In clinical and scientific studies, it is important to quickly determine the physical activity level of patients in terms of time management. The aim of the study was to examine the validity of the rapid assessment of physical activity (RAPA) questionnaire in older patients with COPD. Methods: A total of 105 older patients with COPD surveyed the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF) and after 2 weeks RAPA questionnaire as well. The IPAQ-SF was accepted as the gold standard for physical activity assessment in COPD. Furthermore, patients were assessed for a 6-min walking test (6MWT) and perceived dyspnea (with modified medical research dyspnea scale (mMRC)). Correlation coefficients (r) was used for the relationship between RAPA and IPAQ-SF. Results: There were significant positive correlations between RAPA and IPAQ-SF total score (r = 0.968, p<0.001), 6MWT (r = 0.626, p<0.001), in addition to significant negative correlation between the RAPA and mMRC scores (r = -0.454, p<0.001). The RAPA showed good sensitivity (87.5%) and a specificity (100%) value. Positive and negative predictive values of the RAPA were 100% and 96.4% respectively. Conclusion: This study showed the RAPA was an easy-to-use, valid, and reliable questionnaire to measure physical activity levels in older patients with COPD.Article Citation - WoS: 3The Role of Community-Based Health Practice on the Improvement of Healthcare Students' Communication, Empathy and Perception of the Elderly: a Qualitative Study at Izmir University of Economics(Istanbul Univ, Fac Communication, 2021-08-25) Aksoy, Zeynep; Gokdemir, Ozden; Şemin, Makbule İlgi; Semin, IlgiInterpersonal communication involving empathy is of great importance in therapeutic relationships in healthcare. To equip medical/healthcare students with interpersonal communication skills, community-based health education provides real-life contexts in which they engage with the community as part of the curriculum. A community-based health practice (CBHP) was implemented at Izmir University of Economics (IUE) to improve students' communication, empathy and perception towards the elderly. Within an interdisciplinary collaboration among the medicine, nursing, elderly-care and physiotherapy programs, a total of 111 students participated in the project. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the CBHP on students' communication, empathy and perception of the elderly. Taking a qualitative approach, focus group interviews were organized with students (n=22). Descriptive analysis of the qualitative data revealed that students witnessed the loneliness of elderly individuals, their physical and psychosocial needs, which resulted in a high degree of empathy. Furthermore, the study also aimed to gain insights from elderly participants via in-depth interviews (n=9). Results demonstrated that the participants felt valued and useful during the communication processes with the students. In conclusion, CBHP contributed to students' perceptions and empathy towards the elderly; meanwhile the elderly individuals were satisfied with the interest of the medical, nursing and healthcare students.
