Çalışmanın sonucunda, kullanıcıların ürünü tasarımcının amaçladığı renge olabildiğince yakın algılamasını sağlamak için perakende mağaza tasarımcıları ve aydınlatma mühendislerinin işbirliği yapması önerilmiştirArticle Tuberculosis in Cinematic Narratives: Architectural Spaces and Socio-Spatial Constructs(2024-08-09) Avcı, Deniz; Hosanli, Deniz AvciPulmonary tuberculosis has been prominent in representations of illness in theater and cinema since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Tuberculosis has served as a convenient vehicle for “romantic storytelling,” and the sanatorium as an ideal film set, one whose bucolic setting evokes in the audience a sense of escaping into nature. Focusing on three films—Una Breve Vacanza (A Brief Vacation, Vittorio De Sica, 1973), Učitel Tance (The Dance Teacher, Jaromil Jireš, 1995), and Kelebeğin Rüyası (A Butterfly’s Dream, Yılmaz Erdoğan, 2013)—this study explores the medico-social reflections of tuberculosis and those aspects of the disease that make it such a favorite of cinema, including “easy acting,” “romantic storytelling,” and “visual and spatial aesthetics.” The three films examined here utilize sanatorium facilities’ venues, spaces, and architecture to create visually appealing and spatially engaging aesthetics. These films, all of which take place in the mid-twentieth century, are selected to include a diverse range of sanatorium venues and different typologies of sanatorium architecture. These films not only convey information about tuberculosis and three different global sanatorium cases but also serve as valuable archival documents that offer insights into the socio-spatiality of the disease in architecture and cinema.Article User-Centered Approaches in Conventional and Autonomous Truck Design and Future Effects on Environmental Design(2022-04-30) Dilaver, Nimet; Küçükerman, Önder; Hasırcı, DenizMeeting the world’s increasing need for transportation today soon requires the development of autonomous vehicle systems. User-centered approaches in industrial design are crucial to advance technological, mechanical, and equipment specifications and provide effective driving experiences. This study analyzes conventional and new generation autonomous vehicles through user-centered design (UCD) and drivers’ experiences. Turkish company BMC and the new truck series “Tuğra” are selected. Participants are truck drivers, designers, engineers, and specialists. Observations and face-to-face interviews investigated comfort, usefulness, usability, desirability, accessibility, credibility, findability, and value from the elements of user experience design within the truck, as well as users’ awareness of UCD. Credibility and usability were among the highest-ranked principles. The participants provided valuable information for the design development of trucks, and ideas for future problems and solutions. Further multidisciplinary research that focuses on technical, as well as social and ethical issues is essential in this new and emerging area.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Contradicting Parochial Realms in Neighborhood Parks: How the Park Attributes Shape Women’s Park Use(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture, 2023-06-01) Kaştaş Uzun, İpek; Şenol, F.; Kaştaş-Uzun, İpekNeighborhood parks are significant green public spaces located in close social and geographical proximity to homes to maintain individual and public health. However, some people do not use the nearest parks, but those with other socio-spatial attributes that make them feel more “familiar”. This study argues that with their facilities, amenities and design, and the surrounding land uses, neighborhood parks do not only accommodate, but also define, regulate, and originate social relations among users. Thus, the design and planning of urban public spaces play a role in the emergence and maintenance of supportive and conflictual relations that lead to familiarity. The study answers two research questions: How do the park attributes shape and mediate the interpersonal relations among the park users? How do gender differences influence the parochial realms in parks? Data was collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with 33 female users of two neighborhood parks in a populous district of Izmir (Turkey). Results state that women’s park visits were related to their gendered roles and responsibilities. Yet their responses point to challenges emerging from physical and social attributes of parks and park surroundings which lead to negotiations to protect their individual or group’s privacy (parochial realm) in neighborhood parks. Mainly, perceived threats to women’s parochial realm are men unaccompanied by child(ren), and exposure to the male gaze. The study highlights the importance of investigating these attributes of neighborhood parks for developing research and public policies to improve women’s presence and perceived safety in public settings. © 2023, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. Especially during professional careers, designerswork in multidisciplinary environments where they need to develop responses collaboratively. However, undergraduate design education is being criticized for missing to fulfill this need. The aim of this paperis to discuss the role and benefits of multidisciplinary design education with the example of the coursenamed “An Introduction to Contemporary Architectural Landscaping”. As the methodology of thepaper, through deconstruction of the 3 parted course structure and analysis of student works, this paperanalyses the role of a multidisciplinary education on students’ learning experiences. First two parts ofthe course focus on technical aspects of landscape architecture discipline, and cultural, physiologicaland psychological effects of landscape projects for users. Last part of the course focus on creating aplatform for students to work in collaboration with other students to gain practical experience in designfield where they develop a landscape architecture project on sites from their near environments. Thereare three main findings of the study. Firstly, inclusion of students from different disciplines in the samecourse increases the success rate via cross-learning experiences. Secondly, during design education, having the chance of participation to courses from different disciplines help to broaden students’perspectives on problem solving during design phase. Finally, projects in environments that studentsexperience in their everyday life increase their success rates. Results of the study that is based on theoutcomes of the course that is conducted with the students of two different design departments indicatethat this course structure and projects that are designed can be a guide for other design courses to developa multidisciplinary course structure to include students from different disciplines, enrich their learningexperiences and success after graduation.Article Designing a Concept Store: an Interdisciplinary Design Process(2021-07-07) Rolla, Silvia; Hasırcı, Deniz; Anal, Yucel Selin; Edes, ZeynepThe aim of this study is to introduce a design method for interior architectureeducation that would lead the students through the stages of the development oftheir projects. The design process is structured into five stages: conceptdevelopment; spatial development; technical drawings and physical model;detailing and three-dimensional representation; finalization. The second goal is toadopt an interdisciplinary approach to stimulate creative thinking. Therefore, inthis project interior architecture was related to several aspects of retailing andbranding during the design process of a concept store. The proposed method hasencouraged the formation of conceptual ideas in response to a defined designproblem. By integrating interior architectural problems with retailing concepts, students have learned to analyze, research, devise design ideas, and transfer ideasinto spatial compositions. This led to creative design solutions and diverse designapproaches. The organization of the semester into stages has guided the studentsto approach the design problem gradually and to explore design solutions parallelto their conceptual ideas. By the end of the semester, the students were able tocomprehend their progress along the design stages and to benefit from theinterdisciplinary approach. Findings may be beneficial for students, designeducators and designers interested in design process, interdisciplinarity processes, and designing retailing concept stores. The developed method may be used toprovide students with structured design process skillsArticle Concept and Scale Focus in Interior Design Education: an Adaptive Reuse Museum Project(2022-12-30) Kabaçam, Gülçin; Hasırcı, Deniz; Edes, Zeynep; Tatari, Haluk; Bakır Küçükkaya, İdil; Rolla, Silvia; Çalışkanelli, Müge; Kucukkaya, Idıl BakırThis study concentrates on the value of the interior design profession and how a concept and scale approach can enable a holistic professional approach. The emphasis of the paper is on interior design education, particularly the second-year studio where the interior design process is learned. The adaptive reuse project building was in Çeşme, Turkey and designed as a museum for a chosen artist. The method involved understanding the design process as a whole, beginning from a larger scale that includes landscape, leading to the detailing scale. While the first semester emphasized abstract issues, the second semester focused on materialization of ideas into applicable decisions. The project process was divided into four stages within each semester. The resulting projects drawings and models represented advanced levels of knowledge regarding the stages and process of interior design, its components, as well as an understanding of larger and smaller scales inherently connected to the profession.Article Effects of Retail Lighting on Product Color Perception and User Satisfaction(Anadolu Univ, 2022-12-21) Dilgen, Ozge; Hasirci, DenizLight source color properties in retail applications are among the most important factors affecting the user satisfaction in shopping places. A lighting design with a low color rendering value and an unsuitable color temperature can create a difference in the color perception of the product which may affect customers purchase decision or cause dissatisfaction resulting in the return of the product. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the effects of lighting on product color perception and customer's feedback on the color difference. In order to fulfill this aim, the color differences of the chosen products are examined in three different key areas of a chain clothing store in Izmir, Turkey and compared with the color under daylight. Moreover, the user feedback is taken via a questionnaire to discuss the relationship between color display and user satisfaction/dissatisfaction. The collected data shows that although people do not realize the color differences inside the store, if they experience it after their purchase it may result in the return of the product. As a result of the study, it is suggested that retail store designers and lighting engineers should collaborate to ensure that the consumer perceives what the product designer intended as accurately as possible.
