Article Enriching Learning Experience Through Multidisciplinary Design Education: Structure Proposal for a Landscape Design Course(2020-07-01) Kaştaş Uzun, İpek; Uzun, Ipek KastasDesign related fields are quite intricate and it is hard to define strict boundaries in between thesedisciplines which cause the necessity of collaboration. Especially during professional careers, designerswork in multidisciplinary environments where they need to develop responses collaboratively. However, undergraduate design education is being criticized for missing to fulfill this need. The aim of this paperis to discuss the role and benefits of multidisciplinary design education with the example of the coursenamed “An Introduction to Contemporary Architectural Landscaping”. As the methodology of thepaper, through deconstruction of the 3 parted course structure and analysis of student works, this paperanalyses the role of a multidisciplinary education on students’ learning experiences. First two parts ofthe course focus on technical aspects of landscape architecture discipline, and cultural, physiologicaland psychological effects of landscape projects for users. Last part of the course focus on creating aplatform for students to work in collaboration with other students to gain practical experience in designfield where they develop a landscape architecture project on sites from their near environments. Thereare three main findings of the study. Firstly, inclusion of students from different disciplines in the samecourse increases the success rate via cross-learning experiences. Secondly, during design education, having the chance of participation to courses from different disciplines help to broaden students’perspectives on problem solving during design phase. Finally, projects in environments that studentsexperience in their everyday life increase their success rates. Results of the study that is based on theoutcomes of the course that is conducted with the students of two different design departments indicatethat this course structure and projects that are designed can be a guide for other design courses to developa multidisciplinary course structure to include students from different disciplines, enrich their learningexperiences and success after graduation.Article Designing a Concept Store: an Interdisciplinary Design Process(2021-07-07) Rolla, Silvia; Hasırcı, Deniz; Anal, Yucel Selin; Edes, ZeynepThe aim of this study is to introduce a design method for interior architectureeducation that would lead the students through the stages of the development oftheir projects. The design process is structured into five stages: conceptdevelopment; spatial development; technical drawings and physical model;detailing and three-dimensional representation; finalization. The second goal is toadopt an interdisciplinary approach to stimulate creative thinking. Therefore, inthis project interior architecture was related to several aspects of retailing andbranding during the design process of a concept store. The proposed method hasencouraged the formation of conceptual ideas in response to a defined designproblem. By integrating interior architectural problems with retailing concepts, students have learned to analyze, research, devise design ideas, and transfer ideasinto spatial compositions. This led to creative design solutions and diverse designapproaches. The organization of the semester into stages has guided the studentsto approach the design problem gradually and to explore design solutions parallelto their conceptual ideas. By the end of the semester, the students were able tocomprehend their progress along the design stages and to benefit from theinterdisciplinary approach. Findings may be beneficial for students, designeducators and designers interested in design process, interdisciplinarity processes, and designing retailing concept stores. The developed method may be used toprovide students with structured design process skillsArticle Concept and Scale Focus in Interior Design Education: an Adaptive Reuse Museum Project(2022-12-30) Kabaçam, Gülçin; Hasırcı, Deniz; Edes, Zeynep; Tatari, Haluk; Bakır Küçükkaya, İdil; Rolla, Silvia; Çalışkanelli, Müge; Kucukkaya, Idıl BakırThis study concentrates on the value of the interior design profession and how a concept and scale approach can enable a holistic professional approach. The emphasis of the paper is on interior design education, particularly the second-year studio where the interior design process is learned. The adaptive reuse project building was in Çeşme, Turkey and designed as a museum for a chosen artist. The method involved understanding the design process as a whole, beginning from a larger scale that includes landscape, leading to the detailing scale. While the first semester emphasized abstract issues, the second semester focused on materialization of ideas into applicable decisions. The project process was divided into four stages within each semester. The resulting projects drawings and models represented advanced levels of knowledge regarding the stages and process of interior design, its components, as well as an understanding of larger and smaller scales inherently connected to the profession.
