    R&d, Innovation and Stock Market Performance: a Study on the Istanbul Stock Exchange

    AR-GE' ye yatırım yapmak, rakiplerinin önüne geçmek ve yeni ürün ve servisler üretmek isteyen şirketler için çok önemlidir. Teknolojik faaliyetler sadece operasyonel fayda sağlamakla kalmayıp ayrıca şirketlerin finansal piyasalardaki gelişimine de yardımcı olur. Bu çalışma teknolojik göstergeler ve şirketlerin hisse senedi piyasası performansı arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktadır. Ben bu çalışmada AR-GE harcamaları ve şirkeltlerin sahip olduğu patentler gibi teknolojik göstergelerin, piyasa değeri defter değeri oranı, fiyat kazanç oranı ve piyasa değeri gibi performans göstergelerine olan etkilerini araştırıyorum. Sonuçlar, inovasyon ve teknolojik faaliyetlerin IMKB'deki şirketlerin piyasa performansını geliştirdiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca teknolojik göstergeler ve hisse senedi fiyatı volatilitesi arasındaki ilişkiyi incelediğimde hisse senedi fiyatı volatilitesi ve AR-GE harcamaları arasında iki yönlü bir ilişki buldum.

    R&d Productivity and Firm Size in Semiconductors and Pharmaceuticals: Evidence From Citation Yields

    Using firm level panel data from the U.S., the authors explore the relationship between firm size and R&D productivity for two important and R&D-intensive industries: Semiconductors and Pharmaceuticals. They employ two measures of a firm's R&D performance: the number of citations received per patented innovation, and the number of citations received per dollar of R&D expenditures. The former is a measure of the average quality of a firm's patents, and the latter is a measure of total R&D output obtained per dollar of investments. The authors find that the average quality of patents (citations received per patent) falls with firm size in Pharmaceuticals, but there is no relationship between patent quality and firm size in Semiconductors. Citations received per R&D dollar decrease with size in both industries, which is due to the well-documented negative relationship between patents per R&D and firm size.

    The Effect of Foreign Direct Investment (fdi) on the Economic Growth Performance of Mena Countries

    Bu tez, doğrudan yabancı yatırımların (DYY) Orta Doğu ve Kuzey Afrika (ODKA) ülkelerinin ekonomik büyüme performansları üzerindeki etkisini, on ülkeden oluşan bir panel veri yardımı ile incelemektedir. Bu ülkelerin ileri teknoloji, fiziksel sermaye birikimi ve yetenekli işgücü açısından yeterli derecede gelişmemiş oldukları göz önünde bulundurularak, ve DYY'nin önemli bir teknoloji transferi, sermaye birikimi DYY'ın büyüme üzerinde olumlu bir etkisi olması beklenebilir. Bu yerel eksiklikler, bu bölgede yabancı yatırımcılar için iyi bir pazar potansiyeli oluşturmuş ve yabancı yatırımlar için çekici fırsatlar oluşturmuştur. Bu çalışma, DYY'ın büyüme üzerindeki etkisini ODKA bölgesinde 2001-2012 yılları arasıda ele almakta, ve ülke bazında ekonomik büyüme, DYY, ihracat, işsizlik, nüfus, şehirleşme, tarıma elverişli alan, doğal kaynaklar ve sermaye oluşumu değişkenlerini de kullanmakdadır. Ampirik sonuçlara ulaşmak için Panel-Veri Ekonometrisi yöntemleri (Sabit Etkiler Yöntemi ve Rastgele Etkiler Yöntemi) kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, ODKA bölgesi için doğrudan yabancı yatırımların önemli olduğunu, ve yabancı yatırımların bu bölgedeki ekonomik büyüme oranları üzerinde pozitif ve istatiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir

    International Investors, Volatility, and Herd Behavior: Borsai̇stanbul, 2001-2016

    We study herding in Borsa Istanbul between 2001 and 2016, focusing on the effects of international investors and market volatility. Herding explains 31% of total variability in the cross sectional standard deviation of beta values, controlling for market fundamentals. We perform time-series analysis of a herding index and find that herding increases following increased trading by international investors, but falls with overall trading volume on the market. Herding rises in response to increased volatility, rather than leading to it, against previous arguments. Investors do not herd during economic crises, but following important events that raise political tension in the country.
