Abstract

Traditional research on adolescents has largely concentrated on the role of adolescent adjustment in the context of triangulation into interparental conflict, often neglecting the reciprocal nature of these dynamics. To address this gap, this chapter, grounded in the family systems theory, explores the bidirectional relations between adolescent adjustment and triangulation into interparental conflict, focusing on how adolescent adjustment can influence triangulation and, conversely, how such triangulation can impact adolescent adjustment. By delving into these multifaceted pathways, the chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the complex interactions within family subsystems. It examines various family and adolescent correlates of triangulation into interparental conflict, along with factors associated with adolescent adjustment, and considers mediators such as cognitive and contextual variables, parenting practices, and basic psychological needs, as well as moderators like gender and developmental stage.
