Evaluating the Role of Identity in European Integration From a Constructivist Perspective

Abstract

This thesis evaluates the process of European integration by making use of the constructivist perspective, with a specific focus on the concept of identity as the point of departure. The processes of integration and enlargement are increasingly being shaped along the lines of culture and identity, and the definition and interpretation of European identity have a very important role in the future of the EU. The foreign policy decisions of EU member states and the attitude towards non-members are determined by the conception of identity, which has a direct influence on the enlargement process. The post Cold War period, the accession of CEECs with the latest enlargement, and the problematic accession process of Turkey are presented as specific supporting arguments. Bütünleşme ve genişleme süreçleri, giderek kültür ve kimlik ekseni üzerinde şekillenmeye başlamış olmakla beraber, Avrupa Kimliği kavramının tanımı ve yorumu, Avrupa Birliği'nin geleceği üzerinde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Avrupa Birliği üyesi devletlerin dış politikaları ve üye olmayan devletlere karşı tavırları, kimlik kavramı tarafından şekillenmekte ve genişleme sürecini doğrudan etkilemektedir. Soğuk Savaş sonrası dönem, son genişleme sürecinde Doğu Avrupa ülkelerinin Avrupa Birliği'ne üye olmaları ve Türkiye'nin sorunlu üyelik süreci, destekleyici örnekler olarak sunulmaktadır.
