Faith and fracture: The black church's role changing role in social justice movement

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Siyah Kilise'nin modern dünyadaki dinamiklerini ve sosyal adalet hareketlerini inceliyor, özellikle Siyah Kilise'nin Siyahların Yaşamları Değerlidir (BLM) hareketinden silinmesini ve 6 Ocak isyanının ortaya çıkardığı kimlik sorularını odak noktası olarak alıyor. This study looks at the dynamics of the Black Church and social justice movements in the modern world, focusing on the Black Church's erasure from the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and the questions of identity raised by the January 6 insurrection. Traditionally, the Black Church has been involved in African American social and political activism, particularly in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, where the Black Church was at the forefront, offering direction and support. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate a decline in the current liberationist activities, which warrants asking what has led to this change and its implications. The research uses historical analysis, case studies, media framing analysis, and interviews with present-day Black Church leaders and BLM activists. This five-pronged approach is designed to determine why the Black Church has backed away from social justice activism and how it can regain its voice. Such findings suggest that shifts in political, economic, and social contexts, along with the rise of new styles of activism that are different from the leadership of the Black Church, have influenced this institution. The organization of BLM is far more decentralized and secular than the Civil Rights Movement and the primary use of social media for their organization and mobilization. In addition, internal community focus and doctrinal problems within the Black Church have played a role in its present position. Lastly, the study provides the solution to nullify the gap between the present day social movements and traditional institutions concerning Black Church still capable of incorporating new techniques to ensure it becomes an influential pillar in the fight against racial injustice and discrimination for a better tomorrow. These implications are not confined to the Black population only, but they have broad generalizability to any social justice cause in the global context.
