The Grief Experience of People Who Lost Their Pets: Mediating Role of Social Constraints, Perceived Social Support, and Attachment

Abstract

Bu çalışma, bir evcil hayvanın ölümünün ardından yas ile depresyon, anksiyete ve stres arasındaki ilişkide sosyal kısıtlamalar, algılanan sosyal destek ve bağlanmanın aracı rollerini incelemektedir. Araştırmanın örneklemini son bir yılda evcil hayvanını ölüm nedeni ile kaybeden 210 yetişkin katılımcı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın hipotezlerini test etmek için Katılımcı Bilgi Formu, Evcil Hayvan Yas Ölçeği, Lexington Evcil Hayvanlara Bağlanma Ölçeği, Çok Boyutlu Algılanan Sosyal Destek Ölçeği-Gözden Geçirilmiş Form, Sosyal Kısıtlamalar Ölçeği ve Depresyon, Anksiyete ve Stres Ölçeği-21 kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre sosyal kısıtlamalar yas ile depresyon, anksiyete ve stres arasındaki ilişkiye aracılık etmiştir ancak algılanan sosyal destek ve bağlanmanın bu ilişkide aracılık rolü olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre, bir evcil hayvanın ölümü ile ilgili yas tepkilerinin yoğunluğuna rağmen, bireylerin deneyimledikleri kayıp diğer insanların gözünde gerçek bir kayıp olarak kabul edildiği taktirde depresyon, anksiyete ve stres düzeyleri azalabilir. Mevcut çalışmanın sonuçları, sınırlamaları, güçlü yönleri ve etkileri tartışılmış ve gelecekteki tartışmalar için öneriler bu çalışmada sunulmuştur.

This study examines the mediator roles of social constraints, perceived social support, and attachment in the relationship between grief and depression, anxiety, and stress following the death of a pet. The sample of the study consists of 210 adult participants who lost their pets in the last year due to death. Participant Information Form, Pet Bereavement Questionnaire, Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale-Revised, Social Constraints Scale, and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 were used to test the hypotheses of the study. Results of the mediation analysis revealed that social constraints mediated the relationship between grief and depression, anxiety, and stress however, perceived social support and attachment did not. The results indicated that despite the intensity of grief reactions related to the death of a pet if individuals feel like there is an environment where their loss is acknowledged, levels of depression, anxiety, and stress may be reduced. The findings of the study are discussed in terms of relevant literature. Limitations of the study and suggestions were presented for future research.
