Book Part Citation - Scopus: 1The Afterlife of Migrant Gifts(Springer International Publishing, 2023) Mura G.; Mura, GökhanThis chapter discusses the cultural impact and adoption of migrant gifts as material remittances in Turkey. It presents a conceptual framework for exploring migration through the biographical stories of gifts brought from European countries to Turkey from the beginning of the planned Turkish labor migration in the 1960s. Gifts are a material medium to explore the change of value regimes as well as a medium to communicate migrant narratives. The perceived value of the migrant gift in its culture of origin shifts when it becomes a gift and is taken to Turkey not only because it inherits the exchange value as a gift but also because it inherits an exotic quality as it is brought to a country with a different material climate. Discussing the value shift and the adoption of the gift objects throughout their cultural biographies also enlightens us about the social and economic changes that were simultaneously occurring in Turkey. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2023.Review Citation - WoS: 1Balkan Locus-Focus: Long 20th Century Visual Communication Design Histories(Mit Press, 2014) Ksenija, Berk[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 10Chaos or Homogenization? the Role of Shop Signs in Transforming Urban Fabric in Beyoglu, Istanbul(Sage Publications Inc, 2009) Ertep, HakanIstiklal Street, more commonly known as 'Beyoglu', is one of the oldest and most prominent areas of the city of Istanbul. It is an area characterized by richness and profundity in terms of its history and cultural background. If asked, perhaps every resident of Istanbul would express fond memories of Beyoglu in days gone by, particularly the older generation. Beyoglu is also one of the most visited and attractive spots of Istanbul in terms of liveliness and nightlife, and can be compared to Piccadilly Circus in London, Times Square in New York, or Ginza in Tokyo. It has always been the business sector of Istanbul, rather than a residential area. Today, it is probably the most popular and exciting part of Istanbul with its shops, restaurants and bars as well as its museums and bookshops. Despite the visual disorder and chaos that such a centre of attraction tends to attract, one would expect Beyoglu to reflect the area's richness and vibrancy in its outdoor signs and billboards. However, recent changes brought in by the local municipality seem to have dimmed and toned down the intrinsic character of this significant district. All shops and stores have been instructed to change their outdoor signs to wooden backgrounds with brass lettering an attempt to bring back the old, nostalgic look of Istiklal Street in the 1950s and 1960s. However, with all the fascia-boards and signs now looking very much alike, has this standardization procedure actually served its purpose, or has it merely acted as an instrument of visual homogenization? The visual form of many city centres with their highly distinctive neon lights may seem to be rather disordered and chaotic but, on the other hand, does unification of visual identity act as an agent to subdue the very nature of urban fabric? This study is an attempt to investigate the role of outdoor shop signs and fascia-boards in relation to the visual and cultural identity of urban settings. It uses the Beyoglu district as an example and examines views for and against this particular case.Article Conspicuous Travel: Consuming and Sharing on Facebook(Univ Complutense Madrid, Servicio Publicaciones, 2014) Arda, ZeynepThe self-conscious individual of our contemporaneity is excessively conscious of her/his appearance or manner, as it is constantly reflected in the digital mirrors of the online social network. We tend to build our images in the way that we want others to see us, hence slowly we losing the boundary between our images and our identities. Within this perspective, traveling also becomes an item of conspicuous consumption - and the online social network, its display.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Cultural Heritage Manifestation in Computer Role-Playing Games for Enhancing Museum Experience: a Model Proposal(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Turkmen, Doruk; Savaşta, DanieleThis article proposes a model for integrating computer role-playing games with museum experiences to enhance cultural heritage learning with a particular focus on design. Centered at the Izmir Archaeology Museum, the study delves into the design of a serious game aimed at enriching both the educational and experiential facets of museum visits. The model highlights the use of gameplay components and design patterns to manifest tangible and intangible heritage content, thereby promoting visitor awareness and understanding of cultural heritage. Through a provisional game scenario based on the museum's prehistoric artifact exhibition, the study illustrates how a gameplay design approach that is informed by heritage content displayed in the museum can be prototyped. The proposed model not only aims to make museum visits more engaging, but also seeks to contribute to the broader discourse on game design, game-based learning, and museum experience.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Facing the 'other a Critical Approach To the Construction of Identity Narratives in the Early Photographic Practice of the Ottoman Empire(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2011) Ertem Başkaya, FulyaWhen photography spread outside Europe at the end of the nineteenth century, it played an important role in transforming the Ottoman Empire. Not only it was used to record its history, but also it became a means of marketing the 'Orient' as a commercial port, trading centre, market for European goods and site for foreign investments. At that time, photography was generally a field occupied by a small group of people with a Western background. Their aims were usually to photograph landscapes, including ceremonial marketplaces, streets, and examples of religious and civilian architecture that reflected the texture of life in large cities. Among these non-Muslim photographers, there were some - such as the Abdullah Brothers, Vassilaki Kargopoulo and Pascal Sebah - who also executed a series of work that reflects a general attitude towards photography in Europe: the desire to create/categorize subjectivities through the construction of identity narratives. In their photographs, we thus perceive an attempt of identifying everyday life people according to their jobs or specific characteristics. This paper explores some of these photographs in terms of their possibility of questioning and/or breaking such a construction, by focusing on the act of posing and its potential in questioning (self-)identification and (self-)recognition. It thus reveals that, in an era where photography was used to create an image of the 'Other', the encounter of this 'Other' with the photographic camera for the first time may provide us with examples of posing subjects who appear to expose some inner conflicts and incongruities, permitting us to question the power of photography in the construction of identity narratives.Book Review Fragile Innovation: Episodes in Greek Design History(Bloomsbury Publ Plc, 2013) Emmanouil, Marina[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 6History and Communication Facing Territorial Projection: the Oriental Image of the City of Granada(Univ Complutense Madrid, Servicio Publicaciones, 2013) Bernad Monferrer, Estela; Arda, Zeynep; Fernandez Fernandez, CesarHistory, the art, the architecture, the city (as concept and as material space), is a part of the heritage of territories. Unquestionably, Granada is joined to the Alhambra, and his images -both cognitive and affective- are linked to the image of oriental city that shows this monument (image that today is narrated and transmitted by audiovisual medias but that arises from storytelling of previous centuries). The whole background of perceptions that the cultural heritage of a territory detaches can turn into a fundamental tool for the same one, through the communication, with, among others, strategies of cityplacement and citymarketing.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Human-Centred Design Projects and Co-Design In/Outside the Turkish Classroom: Responses and Challenges(Wiley, 2015) Emmanouil, MarinaPerhaps more than any other professional group in modern history, designers have felt compelled to undertake the responsibility of addressing and engaging with societal problems in their practice. Initially, this liability involved concerns of form and production methods during the industrial revolution era, and developed into existential, ethical and context-specific (Western) priorities of working and living during the twentieth century. Today, citizenship by design involves efforts that are directed to wards creating social change for and with the audience. Drawn from empirical research, this article presents the challenges met and lessons learnt when introducing human-centred design practices to Visual Communication Design (Graphic Design) students in Turkey. As a self-reflexive study, it draws from students' reception and feedback on a studio project on social awareness, accessibility and authority sharing with visually impaired people, and an applied workshop on the benefit of user collaboration in design. It aims to raise questions of relevance and assimilation of a socially oriented design practice in a non-Western, commerce-driven economy at the urge of modernisation. Moreover, acknowledging the strong element of conformity with peer members in Turkish society (such as the government, family and teachers), this work also aims to examine hierarchy-challenging design practice in and outside the Turkish classroom.Article In the Memory of Joseph Beuys: an Exhibition From the 1980s and Its Impact on the Izmir Contemporary Art Scene(Istanbul Univ, Research Inst Turkology, Dept Art History, 2022) Kilincarslan, Rabia ozgulIn the 1980s, one of the most important debates in the arts and culture scene in Turkey is the commercialization of art. One of the results of the commercialization of art is the transformation of the work of art into a decorative object. As a solution to this problem, instead of a work of art produced by traditional mediums, an artistic practice outside the demands of the art market has been proposed. The question of how and with which mediums to create this artistic practice has brought out alternative artistic tendencies. Held in 1986 at the Izmir German Cultural Center, Another Art Collective Exhibition in the Memory of Joseph Beuys exhibition is an important example to understand these discussions. Joseph Beuys, one of the important artists who determined the language of contemporary art with his artistic practice, blurred the border between art and life and expanded the field of art disciplines with the concept of social sculpture. The fact that it is the first group exhibition in the Izmir culture and arts environment where alternative art practices are exhibited determines the place of the exhibition in the art history chronology. The aim of this study is to convey the previously unwritten content of the exhibition, which shows an extremely important historical shift in visual art practices, and to reveal its art-historical importance. Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Modern Graphic Design in Greece After World War Ii(Mit Press, 2014) Emmanouil, Marina[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 3Preparing Future Designers for Their Role in Co-Design: Student Insights on Learning Co-Design(Wiley, 2024) Örnekoğlu-Selçuk, Melis; Emmanouil, Marina; Hasırcı, Deniz; Grizioti, Marianthi; Van Langenhove, LievaThe state-of-the-art literature indicates an increasing need for co-design education as it is imperative to equip future designers with the co-designing mindset. This derives from the significance of involving 'people with lived experience' in co-design processes to better meet their needs. However, the traditional design education system seems to include mostly individual designing skills, causing a lack of skills in design students to facilitate the active participation of people in co-design. This paper reports on a case study carried out in a third-year Bachelor industrial design engineering course with design students (n = 32) and design educators (n = 4) to find an effective and efficient way of preparing future designers for their role in co-design and to gain insights into design students' experience with learning about co-design. As an instructional method, a co-design workshop including the game-play, game-modding and game-design approaches is introduced. The obstacles and confusion of the design students regarding co-design and co-design education, which they have documented throughout the year on their personalised logbooks, are explained to eliminate them in the future for smoother incorporation of co-design education into design education curricula. Lastly, for future designers' mindfulness of co-design and their role as facilitators suggestions are provided such as accreditation of curriculum activities regarding co-design education.Article Reading Ankara Apartment Balcony Balustrades (1950-75) as Material Culture and Their Digital Documentation(Middle East Technical Univ, 2023) Ultav, Z.T.; Savasta, Daniele; Gürel, Meltem O.This paper considers the underexplored potential of wrought iron balcony balustrades as material culture, providing significant clues about a design community of a certain time and society at large. Exploring the wrought iron balcony balustrades of apartment buildings constructed in Ankara between 1950 and 1975, the study potentially contributes to widening the scope of the field of modern architectural culture in Turkey, while underscoring the significance of documenting and preserving these items as material evidence of this culture. Data on balcony balustrades were obtained through a scientific research project focused on 1,850 apartment buildings in Ankara's cankaya District. In particular, the study analyzes the balustrades' authenticity and technological aspect, and their role in shedding light on the relationships among various actors of the construction process. To provide a broader perspective, the study situates the issue within the wider context by conducting a literature review on material culture and the preservation of modern architectural heritage. Furthermore, the research incorporates an analysis of data from semi -structured interviews and an extensive collection of fieldwork photographs. The study concludes with a proposal for digital documentation methods to allow further light to be shed on the period and to preserve their memory, through a multi-layered reading of wrought iron balcony balustrades.Article Spaces of Contrast: Robert Frank's America Through a Heterotopic Lens(Univ Ss Cyril & Methodius Trnava, 2025) Mutlu, Necati TorosThis paper explores Robert Frank's seminal photobook The Americans, using Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopias, as discussed in his 1967 lecture Des Espaces Autres. By analyzing the visual and thematic elements of the book, this study explores how Frank's depiction of 1950s America challenges conventional narratives of American identity and space. The research places Frank's work in the socio-political context of post-war America, emphasizing how his photographs capture both the utopian ideals and the underlying societal tensions of the era. His images, often subtle yet powerful, document scenes that reflect a fragmented and multifaceted nation, revealing disparities between appearance and reality. The concept of heterotopias, as described by Foucault, offers a broader look at Frank's images, through which we can analyse their complex and paradoxical nature. His photographs not only represent physical spaces but also evoke mental and social spaces that are layered with meaning. Examining The Americans from this unique perspective reveals its heterotopic content, allowing the viewer to notice the coexistence of different social realities, albeit occasionally in conflict. By providing an insight into Frank's photographic narrative and its correlation with Foucault's theory, the study aims shedding light on the ways in which visual media can reveal complex social dynamics and question established cultural norms.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 21A Systematic Literature Review on Co-Design Education and Preparing Future Designers for Their Role in Co-Design(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Örnekoğlu-Selçuk, Melis; Emmanouil, M.; Hasırcı, Deniz; Grizioti, M.; Van Langenhove, L.As emphasised by various researchers, the role of designers is now less about 'designing for' and more about 'designing with' users and other stakeholders. The main reason behind this shift relates to the importance of the active involvement of 'people with lived experience' in co-design. Now, designers are also expected to facilitate the active participation of non-designers in co-design processes. However, it is noted that the importance of co-design and the role of designers in co-design have not been widely integrated into design education. Thus, a systematic literature review is conducted to find out the necessity and prevalence of co-design education in higher education programmes and its instructional methods. This paper presents the outcomes of the review of seventeen (n = 17) studies, published between 2007 and 2021, analysed through thematic analysis via NVivo. The findings of this study shed light on the necessity, structure, and challenges of co-design education, as well as evaluation, gaps, and opportunities in this area. Specifically, the significance of motivating students to acquire the necessary mindset for co-designing, which can potentially initiate a meaningful co-design process through game-based approaches and self-learning, is underlined.Article TANER CEYLAN’IN RESİMLERİNDE ANTİK MİTOLOJİK KARAKTERLERİN ve İKONOGRAFİK SİMGELERİN YORUMLANMASI(2021) Kılınçarslan, Rabia Özgül; Mansuroğlu, AhmetMitolojik imgeler, tarih boyunca birçok sanatçının resimlerine konu olmuştur.
