    Research Competence in Initial Teacher Education: Perceptions, Orientations, and Suggestions

    This study aimed to investigate student teachers' perceived competence in educational research, along with teacher educators' and graduates' opinions and suggestions regarding research in an initial English language teacher education program at a state university in Turkiye. To this end, this case study employed a mixed -method design to explore data from 70 student teachers, nine graduates, and six teacher educators through surveys and interviews. We observed that the student teachers perceive themselves as competent in designing, conducting, and reporting research, and their competence was also acknowledged by the graduates and teacher educators. All the participants highlighted the importance of research for teachers; however, some had reservations. They found the context too academically oriented and emphasized the need to introduce the inherent link between teaching and research, which seemed to be obscure especially for the student teachers. We conclude that introducing action research early on is an ideal way to address and embrace all the diverse perceptions, orientations, interests, and motivations about research in initial teacher education.

    Yüzyıllık Süreçte Tevfik Fikret'in Şermin Yapıtı Bağlamında Diliçi Çeviri ve Yanmetin Olgusu

    Diliçi çeviriler konusundaki sınırlı sayıdaki çalışma 1928 dil devriminin ardından Osmanlıca'dan Türkçe'ye yapılan diliçi çevirilerde, bu edimin başka sözcüklerle adlandırıldığını ve tanımı üzerinde bir fikir birliğinin olmadığını göstermektedir. Bu betimleyici çalışmanın amacı, Türk edebiyatındaki ilk çocuk şiir kitaplarından biri olan Tevfik Fikret'in Şermin adlı yapıtının (1914) çağdaş Türkçe'ye aktarılan 30 farklı sürümünden hareketle diliçi çevirilerdeki hem metiniçi hem de yanmetin bağlamındaki müdahalelere ışık tutmak ve bu eserle ilgili 'güncelleme' serüveninin izini sürmektir. Çalışmada, bir eserin günümüz dil özellikleri göz önüne alınarak görüntüde dil güncellemesine yönelik olarak değiştirilmesinin sadece sözcük düzeyindeki metiniçi değişiklikler temelinde gerçekleşmediği, yayınevi politikaları ile ticari, pedagojik ve ideolojik nedenlerin metni çevreleyen yanmetin öğeleri yoluyla bu süreçte manipülatif bir etkiye sahip olduğu ortaya konmaktadır

    Intralingual Translation and Paratext: a Centennial Chase of Tevfik Fikret's Sermin

    The limited number of studies on intralingual translations reveals that the act of intralingual translation is named with different wording in the analysis of intralingual translations made from Ottoman into Turkish, and there is no agreement on its definition. The aim of this descriptive study is to shed light on the interventions made on diachronic intralingual translations both on intralingual and paratextual contexts and to follow the adventure of modernization through 30 different versions of Sermin (1914) by Tevfik Fikret, which constitutes one of the first children's poem books in the Turkish children's literature. The scrutiny of the intralingual translation strategies indicates that the apparent language modernization taking into account current linguistic features is not made on lexical and structure bases only, as the publishing house policies, pedagogical and ideological concerns have also a manipulative effect through paratextual elements in this process.
