Accounting for digital products

Digital products are "content" goods such as software, books, music, or movies which can be digitized and traded on a digital market place. With the increase in trade and ownership of digital products, several important management issues have arisen. Accounting treatment for digital products is one important management issue. It is argued that digital products require regulations in terms of recognition, measurement, valuation, reporting and taxation. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to discuss the accounting problems that arise as a result of the growing importance of digital products in the business environment and to propose suggestions based on the accounting concepts and standards. For this purpose, first, the increasing importance of digital products is briefly explained. Then, the challenge created as a result of expanding trading volume of digital products are discussed in terms of accounting with suggestions for the appropriate accounting for digital products. © 2011, IGI Global.
Addressing Diversity in Language Teacher Education: Perspectives on Practicum

This chapter defines diversity with its relation to initial teacher education and discusses its significance for the pre-service teachers’ practicum experience, which, in addition to the theoretical courses that might (and usually might not) address diversity, enables them to conceptualize the term. It also refers to teacher education systems in some European countries to present the ways in which diversity could be addressed in teacher education. The second half of the chapter presents a case study carried out in Turkey to illustrate how diversity is perceived from the views of teacher educators and pre-service teachers in the context of pre-service language teaching practicum. Though the case study is context-specific, the context bears similarities with many other teacher education environments offering suggestions, implications, and conclusions for initial language teacher education, policy development, and research. © 2023 by IGI Global. Addressing the Challenge of Student Retention in an Intensive English Program Through Micro-Credentials

Ironically, while student attrition is prevalent in virtually every higher education institution, the same cannot be said for student retention awareness, acknowledgment, and action plans. In an English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) context, particularly in first-year intensive English language programs (IEPs), student attrition is acute and high-stakes. Students who cannot succeed in the IEP may never make it to their academic program of study. A primary indicator or precursor to departure is absenteeism, but this is often a proxy for some skill deficiency, which leads to dis-engagement and circles back to high absenteeism. This pattern can quickly devolve into a downward spiral. This chapter explores various causes of attrition in the EMI context and possible solutions to the problem through a case study at an EMI university in Türkiye. A Retention Specialist, an Academic Support initiative, and a Mentoring program have all positively contributed to the retention effort. A micro-credentialing program designed to build non-cognitive skills to help students succeed has shown particular promise and is examined in greater depth. The essential point is that retention requires a collective, multi-lateral approach. Adsorption and Removal of Contaminants Using Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Environmental pollution is an increasing problem, and is an important issue for environmental sustainability. For a sustainable environment, it is necessary to use the natural content of soil, water and air without disturbing it. The removal of pollutants in soil, water and air are necessary in this respect. Many methods are used to remove pollutants from the environment. One of these is adsorption with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIPs can recognize the targeted molecules by size, shape, and functional groups, and have selective binding properties with covalent or non-covalent bonds. Thus, pollution can be removed by specific MIPs. They represent a cost effective, easy-to-apply, reusable and environmentally-friendly method of removing pollution. Pollution can be rapidly removed from the water or soil without the creation of by-products. MIPs can be prepared in different forms, such as micro- or nano-sized spherical particles and membranes, depending on the intended use. In this chapter, the important role of MIPs in environmental applications will be emphasized, particularly in the removal of the various organic and inorganic highly-polluting wastes, such as metal ions, dyes, drugs, and pesticides. The Afterlife of Migrant Gifts

This chapter discusses the cultural impact and adoption of migrant gifts as material remittances in Turkey. It presents a conceptual framework for exploring migration through the biographical stories of gifts brought from European countries to Turkey from the beginning of the planned Turkish labor migration in the 1960s. Gifts are a material medium to explore the change of value regimes as well as a medium to communicate migrant narratives. The perceived value of the migrant gift in its culture of origin shifts when it becomes a gift and is taken to Turkey not only because it inherits the exchange value as a gift but also because it inherits an exotic quality as it is brought to a country with a different material climate. Discussing the value shift and the adoption of the gift objects throughout their cultural biographies also enlightens us about the social and economic changes that were simultaneously occurring in Turkey. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2023.

Analysis of Transient Throughput Rates of Transfer Lines With Pull Systems

Transfer lines represent the basic manufacturing system of many high volume production systems. Analysis and understanding of transfer lines are of great importance to improve design and operation performance of many manufacturing systems. Majority of research on the throughput of transfer lines concentrate on the steady state results. Due to the changes in manufacturing environment and increasing importance of JIT and pull systems, many transfer lines now have to changeover to different parts' production quickly, probably most of the time, before enough time passes to reach steady state for a specific configuration. In such situations, steady state may never be reached and hence results relating to the steady state do not make sense. In these situations, one would be more interested in transient behavior of the system. In this study, we offer a novel analytical model for transient throughput analysis of transfer lines. Defining throughput as the number of units produced by a transfer line with buffers per unit time, this chapter shows how to calculate mean and variance of and interval estimates for throughput for a pull type transfer line. Derivation of distribution of transient throughput of transfer lines is presented and sample calculations are provided.

Analyzing Turkey’s Energy Transition: Challenges and Opportunities

This chapter analyses the Turkish energy policy making from an energy security perspective, considering the policy trilemma that governments are currently facing. WEO’s energy trilemma index will be used as a basis for analyzing Turkey’s energy transition process, together with references to the European Union (EU) energy policy triangle. Turkey’s energy consumption is rapidly increasing, corresponding to economic growth and increasing population levels. It is certain that the decision to increase the share of natural gas had a direct impact on Turkey’s final energy consumption. Turkey’s natural gas consumption passed 50 billion cubic meters in 2014, doubling the levels of 2004. Compared to Turkey’s increasing energy consumption, the rate of hydro power electricity generation is lower than natural gas. However, it is important that these reforms should promote the transition to an energy market with a higher level of renewable energy. © 2017 Robert E. An Application of Regressed Discounted Cash Flow as an Automated Valuation Method: a Case in Bari

The application of automated valuation methodology (AVM) procedure to income approach normally deals with direct capitalization. This happens although the great diffusion of discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The main objectives of paper are twofold: first, we aim to propose an AVM procedure based on the relationship between the DCF inputs and outputs. Second, we seek to determine discount rate and local risk premium in the case of Bari commercial market The study also refines discussions on risk premium factor in the regressed DCF application. The study also and identifies the room for enhancing the suggested methodology. The solution proposed is the model A of Regressed DCF (d'Amato and Kauko 2012).

Approaches To Teaching and Learning Through Eap

This chapter focuses on methodological approaches to teaching and learning English for Academic Purposes (EAP). We focus on two key developments: Todd's (in Journal of English for Academic Purposes 2:147-156, 2003) six principles of EAP, and academic literacies theory. These emerged from different disciplines, EAP and L1 academic writing, respectively, but have much in common, and their convergence has the potential to shape the future of EAP. These represent the practical (Todd, 2003) and the more theoretical aspects (academic literacies) of second language (L2) academic language learning. To focus on the practical nexus, we discuss Todd's (2003) six principles: inductive learning, process syllabuses, learner autonomy, authentic materials and tasks, technology, and team teaching, and discuss their application to various methodological approaches, such as task-based learning, project-based learning, and English medium of instruction. In the second part, we examine the theory of 'academic literacies,' referring to the move away from a mere focus on texts toward greater inclusivity and diversity. We emphasize that 'methods' can include personal approaches as well as institutional ones. We provide implications for EAP teachers to examine their own beliefs about EAP methodology. The chapter concludes with practical guidance on approaches to teaching. We argue that, for EAP, teacher and student autonomy are key to finding methodological balance. © The Author(s). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that focuses on replicating human intelligence in machines (Malik & Solanki, 2021), allowing them to possess problem-solving (Zeigler, Muzy, & Yilmaz, 2009), and decision-making abilities akin to the human brain (Malik & Solanki, 2021). AI methods undergo training using extensive datasets, enabling them to perform specific tasks. Subsequently, they use this acquired knowledge to evaluate unfamiliar data and generate targeted outcomes. One of the remarkable aspects of AI is its capacity to swiftly process massive datasets without human intervention. Advancements in hardware technologies have facilitated a progression from conventional machine learning to deep learning within the field of AI, resulting in the emergence of widely used applications such as natural language processing, speech recognition, computer vision, and image classification parameters (Rana, Rawat, Bijalwan, & Bahuguna, 2018). Moreover, ongoing advancements in hardware aim to move towards neuromorphic hardware, which would lower the energy consumption of AI systems, emulating the energy efficiency of the human brain (Berggren et al., 2020). Atatürk and Contemporary Speech Lessons From the Late Ottoman and Early Republican Era

In recent decades, discussions in Turkey regarding limitations on speech and the press have intensified, attracting widespread global attention. From frequent bans on online communication platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, to the seemingly arbitrary imprisonment of journalists with opposition views, regulation of speech during the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) since 2002 has been highly contentious. This chapter aims to put debate on these practices into an historical perspective, by focusing on the era of the foundation of modern Turkey, namely the late Ottoman and early Republican period, which stretched roughly between 1830 and 1945. It argues that it is in this period that significant fields of contemporary Turkey, such as politics, education, and the legal system, emerged, leaving an enduring legacy, in the context of which contemporary policies must be understood. This earlier era is associated with one of the most significant political characters in Turkey’s history, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), who played a momentous role in the transition from the Ottoman order to modern Turkey. In his single-minded efforts to realize his utopia, a modern, secular republic being part of the Western world, Atatürk brought about a drastic reshaping of Turkish society, and neither Turkey nor the Muslim world will ever be the same again (Hanioğlu 2011, p. 232). Although Mustafa Kemal was evidently not the sole factor that made the transformation of Turkish society possible, he was a radical and authoritative figure who marked the process with his own stamp. It is therefore important to examine his approach to speech as a sociopolitical phenomenon and its regulation, in order to understand the foundational framework in which speech has been handled in the Turkish context. His stamp is central to a consideration of tendencies in speech and society in Turkey. Accordingly, after summarizing Atatürk’s views on the issue of speech, its role and regulation, this chapter presents the context of the late Ottoman and early Republican era that heralded his approach, in order to uncover his inspirations and their underlying dynamics. © Cambridge University Press 2018.

Traditional research on adolescents has largely concentrated on the role of adolescent adjustment in the context of triangulation into interparental conflict, often neglecting the reciprocal nature of these dynamics. To address this gap, this chapter, grounded in the family systems theory, explores the bidirectional relations between adolescent adjustment and triangulation into interparental conflict, focusing on how adolescent adjustment can influence triangulation and, conversely, how such triangulation can impact adolescent adjustment. By delving into these multifaceted pathways, the chapter aims to deepen our understanding of the complex interactions within family subsystems. It examines various family and adolescent correlates of triangulation into interparental conflict, along with factors associated with adolescent adjustment, and considers mediators such as cognitive and contextual variables, parenting practices, and basic psychological needs, as well as moderators like gender and developmental stage. Biohydrogen Production by Biological Water-Gas Shift Reaction and Bioelectrochemical Systems

Numerous strategies have been suggested to address the issue of global warming, which should be prioritized. Due to the availability of effective outcomes via well-established biotechnological applications, current developments have shown the benefits and superiority of nontraditional techniques for more sustainable bioprocessing. Several mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria have reported a distinct fermentation route using C1 gases (e.g. CO and CO2) frequently found in waste gas streams or syngas to generate bio commodities such as acetic acid, ethanol, butanol, 2,3-Butanediol, and hydrogen. This chapter discusses the aforementioned unconventional technologies, which include hydrogen generation technologies such as biological water-gas shift process and microbial electrolysis. Additional details on these technologies, including the effect of microbial community selection on metabolic pathways, the role of bioreactor design in enhancing liquid-gas mass transfer, process parameters, direct and mediated electron transfer mechanisms, and the characteristics of membranes that contribute to improved conductivity and stability under dynamic process conditions. Future prospects include the adaption of different process parameters and materials, such as biochar incorporation into fermentation, and the integration of technologies into bioelectrochemical systems in order to develop a more sustainable method of hydrogen generation. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Biosignal Time-Series Analysis

In this chapter, recent state-of-the-art techniques in biosignal time-series analysis will be presented. We shall start with the problem of patient-specific ECG beat classification where the objective is to discriminate the arrhythmic beats from the normal (healthy) beats of an individual patient. So, we will answer the ultimate question of how to design person-specific, real-time, and accurate monitoring of ECG signals. We shall then move on to the recent solution of a related problem, an early warning system that can alert an individual the instant his/her heart deviates from its normal rhythm. This is a far challenging problem since the detection of the arrhythmia beats should be performed without knowing them. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Brand Privacy Policy and Brand Trust Reference in Online Business Communication

This study aims to contribute to the existing literature by examining strategic communications of online privacy policies of e-commerce brands. Specifically, the key topics and the sentiments of privacy assurances, the aspects of brand trust referred, and the privacy policy-brand trust reference relationship were explored. A total of 62 privacy policy statements on the websites of the 100 leading companies in the e-commerce industry worldwide were analyzed using quantitative content, sentiment, and Spearman's correlation analyses. Results indicate that most of the leading companies in the global e-commerce sector share information about various privacy practices positively. Although the most valuable e-commerce international brands tend to have a higher level of the online brand privacy policy, they are less likely to refer to brand trust. However, online brand privacy policy and online brand trust reference levels are not found to be significantly associated. Copyright © 2023, IGI Global.
